High school maternity leave?
The View had 2 segments yesterday on the emerging issue of granting pregnant high school students 4-6 weeks of maternity leave. You can watch the segments here.
Liberals Whoopie Goldberg and Joy Behar expected conservative Elizabeth Hasselbeck to disapprove, which she did not.
They just don’t get us. Of course pro-lifers want to remove any obstacles to carrying a baby to term, including a policy such as being debated in the Denver Public School System that currently demands new young mothers return immediately after delivering or face unexcused absences and/or expulsion.
In the 2nd segment of The View, the conversation veered on to the topic of abstinence, which Hasselbeck handled well, making the analogy to a totally secure seatbelt and a seatbelt that may not work or break 15-35% of the time. Kids should be taught the difference.

I didn’t even know this was an issue. When I went to HS in the late 80’s the girls who were pregnant came back after 2 – 3 weeks. (3 weeks was more than I got at my job.) That was an all girl Catholic HS and the teachers would ask who was taking notes for so-and-so (whomever the girl was) so that they could study.
I dont see why this is an issue either.
I mean y’all obviously want women to carry their pregnancies to term, so why would you be against a maternity leave for HS girls?
Midnite, we aren’t. It sounds like this has come up in Colorado. Funny, Boulder brings in speakers that tell the kids have sex and do drugs, and Denver won’t let the girls recuperate after giving birth. Nice.
I didn’t realize there was any school in the US that made girls return immediately after giving birth. All the schools in my area give students the same maternity leave they would give a teacher or faculty member. Those Denver school administrators should be ashamed of themselves.

When I tell you all if we stopped bickering we’d see we had a lot of common ground, I was not just being a crazy hippie!!
Teen moms trying to attend school should have the EXACT same rights as working moms. They should be protected not just by local rules, but by the law – to have an appropriate amount of time off that does not lead to hardship or force them to drop out.

I think it’s a good idea- I also think that with things being what they are in the current public school system, being able to play catch-up with that amount of schoolwork and material is not easy. It would be hard to really improve the situation.

My nephew is here from Australia (he’s 5) and he loves my dog. Unfortunately, his mother does not share his passion and I don’t think he’ll be getting a dog of his own any time soon. But we’ve been looking at youtube and dog books together today…
We both agree (mostly on my part for allergy reasons and on his cuz he’s fallen in love with pictures) that if/when he ever gets a dog, he should get a Samoyed!
Your pup is beautiful and very smart (per the time off for teen moms…)
Oh, and I just read his sister the “Olivia” books…you know, the pig with RED BOW!

My 4 year old loves the “Olivia” books.
Tara – she’s 4 and a half. Her name is Augusta, after the town in Maine where she came from, but we just call her Gus, after the white sled dog from one of my FAVORITE disney movies, Iron Will.
MK – honest to god i have NEVER met a dog with a better temperment. My mom takes her to her school, where throngs of kids just hang all over her, climb on her, braid her fur, and tie bows on her, and she loves every second of it. She was also a wonderful therapy dog – when my grandmothers alzheimers was getting really bad, she was having a lot of paranoya and anxiety, and Gus would just lie at her feet and let her pet her for HOURS without moving – it had a VERY calming effect on my grandmother.
The only things I’d warn anyone considering getting a Samoyed of though, is that 1. its in their nature to sleep at the feet of their owners. They used to keep Eskimos warm at night. This means that they do not crate well at all – and they will very stubbornly insist on sleeping on your bed. I love it. My dad, not so much. haha. And the fur…. she needs a LOT of brushing… but fortunately she is very vain, and LOVES being brushed and pampered.
Overall, I’m stuck on this breed, and I’d suggest a Sammy to ANYONE. =)

I loved Elizabeths analogy of the seatbelt.
And while Whoopie and the other woman (Not Joy) actually sounded sane, they made it seem like teens are just walking hormones with the inability to control anything about themselves.
I think it was Hippie (where is she anyway) that was always saying we don’t give teens enough credit…
I wish there was more than 5 minutes given to the topic on this show…

Cuz I don’t know all that much about them. What I’ve heard has always been good, but mostly it had to do with being hypoallergenic…They truly are beautiful animals…I’m a Lassie girl myself, but there are other breeds that tug at my heart. If I lived on a farm I’d have 20 dogs!
Is it me, or have we gone for hours now without a single insult…I love this group!
MK – my other dog is a GIANT 80lb collie. I love him, but he was a lot more high strung than Gus, and barks a lot more. They balance out well though – because Gus would make a horrible guard dog, but Dexter protects us from EVERYTHING…including…squirrels, and sometimes airplanes that DARE to pass too loudly through the air space above our house.

I was an intern/volunteer at the PP in Brooklyn in the Patient Education/Public Health department. I never took a job there though. I worked at a community college in Brooklyn then… now I work at a hospital in Boston.
The facebook site has 98,000 members or so last time I checked, so at this point it basically runs itself. I’ve handed over the moderator job, because I was internet-challenged for a few months between moving back to Mass.

Dexter is so beautiful. I have always had two collies at a time but Gracie is a mix and doesn’t get along with other dogs, so she’s a lone sole. I miss my pure collies so much. I’m so jealous…
(didn’t mean to make it sound like she doesn’t get along with other dogs because she is a mix, just that I can’t get a purebred because Gracie wouldn’t like another dog…

Actually, I collect dolls (they have to be baby dolls, they have to be old and they must have been “loved”…missing ears, stuck eyes…heck, poor Jane’s head fell off. And childrens tea sets. I don’t know why I love the tea sets. They are just so sweet…and much prettier than stamps.
Ha – Tara and MK, I love Olivia too. I’ve sent many of them to my many nieces and nephews, but Amazon just sent me a box for me and my wife to have.

It’s safer not to ride a motorcycle at all, but if you are, you should wear a helmet.
But you are right, I guess it’s better to spend 6 billion dollars a year saying “you should never ride a motorcycle” and then complain about overspending on programs that don’t and have never worked.
