An anti-tax advocacy group and an anti-abortion organization have filed suit against the state, saying that they want to make political contributions as corporations directly to parties and candidates and pay for political ads without going through the “burdensome registration, record-keeping and reporting requirements” of a political fund. Those actions are currently prohibited under state law.
Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life Inc. and the Taxpayers League of Minnesota were joined by Coastal Travel Enterprises LLC in the suit filed Wednesday in federal court in Minneapolis. The suit was filed against a wide array of state officials, including Attorney General Lori Swanson, the state campaign finance board, several judges in the state’s Office of Administrative Hearings and Hennepin Co. Attorney Michael Freeman.
James Bopp Jr., a Terre Haute, IN-based attorney representing
the corporations, could not be reached for comment late Thursday.
