What is human?
Pro-aborts on this site have called preborn humans everything from parasites to humans but not persons, whatever that means. Now, the courts may decide this critical point. Reports the New York Times today….
A South Dakota law that would require doctors to tell women seeking abortions that the procedure would “terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being” will be revisited today by the 11 judges of the federal appeals court in St. Louis….
The appeals court hearing is a second take on an October decision by a three-judge panel of the same body, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, that the law should remain blocked because it supplements factual information with a value judgment….
South Dakota’s attorney general, Larry Long, said the appeal was largely based on the one dissenting view on the three-judge panel: that the required disclosure was an obvious fact. The State Legislature, Mr. Long said, had defined “human being” to mean a member of the species homo sapiens, and that phrase does not include a value judgment….
“What we are fighting is the imposition of a state mandated non-science-based script read by a doctor to a patient in an attempt to intimidate the patient,” said Sarah Stoesz, the chief executive for Planned Parenthood in the three-state region of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota….
Meanwhile, reports New Scientist magazine….

In a ground-breaking case… [in] Austria, a judge is to rule over the “humanness” of a chimp – specifically, over whether it deserves a legal guardian.
The chimpanzee in question is called Hiasl. He was born in the Sierra Leone jungle in 1981, captured by animal traders and illegally shipped to Austria, destined for a vivisection lab. Customs officials intercepted the crate and Hiasl was handed to an animal sanctuary. Now, years later, the sanctuary has gone bankrupt and Hiasl is to be sent to a zoo.
Hence the trial. Paula Stibbe, a British woman, has applied to the court to be named Hiasl’s legal guardian, saying it deserves the same rights as a human. So the chimp – which shares 96% of its DNA with humans – is having its personhood debated.
Primatologists and legal experts have spoken up in support of Hiasl having human legal status. Volker Sommer, a primatologist at London University, says chimps are not just one of the homo genus – he believes they should be considered as the same species as contemporary humans.
This answer is easy for Christians. The Bible says humans are made in the image of God, which is what makes us unique. But how do those disdaining the Bible, or claiming there is no God, or disputing that preborn humans are human make the distinction?

I don’t care if the chimp gets legal rights.
As long as they don’t give rights to chimp feti.
Using the Bible for science is like using pornography as an example of sex: you’re going to end up unsatisfied, confused, and dangerous.
For crying out loud, keep god and religion in church and out of the courtroom… as if it wasn’t bad enough when a stupid judge over here practically declared wife-beating legal for a Muslim.
Yes,
Ingrid by all means, leave the church out of it.
The government is quite capable of making a monkey out of itself without any help from us.
Pun intended…
mk
But how do those disdaining the Bible, or claiming there is no God, or disputing that preborn humans are human make the distinction?
It all comes down to intelligence. The monkeys win.
It’s a simple answer.
A half-truth is a whole lie.
Pro-deathers use half truths consistently and conveniently in their logic when it supports the murder of human beings in the womb. They resist any truth that supports life at conception.
I wonder, is Paula Stibbe pro-life or pro-death, of humans that is? What I find is that most people like her are so warped in their thinking, they would be more concerned how a monkey is used for medical research than whether abortion kills a human being. There’s gotta be a common thread of thinking that run’s through pro-deather’s minds. Any ideas out there about that?
How about demonic possession?
Perhaps they should ask the chimpanzee what he thinks?
Ingrid,
Keep God and the church out of the courtroom?
I bet the first thing you would do if you ever had to go to court or find out that you had a terminal disease is to get down on your knees.
Or are you really that confused about Who controls the universe?
You make me chuckle His Man…there is no such thing as demonic possession. You’ve been watching a bit too much “Inu-Yasha” methinks.
Even satan believes in God.
“I bet the first thing you would do if you ever had to go to court or find out that you had a terminal disease is to get down on your knees.”
Nope. The first thing I’d do if I ever had to go to court would be to hire a lawyer. If I ever find out I have a terminal disease the first thing I do is go out and get reeeeeeeeally drunk. Then go find a suitable doctor to discuss said options and do treatment for as long as reasonable…then once things are so far gone have a glass of wine and a bottle o’ morphine.
“Even satan believes in God.”
As far as I’m concerned, if an imaginary creature wants to believe in an imaginary being, then there is no issue.
But, if you’re trying to convince me that god exists because satan believes he does…well, then you have a big problem.
Hey, pro-aborts. Read the post. I already acknowledged you don’t believe in God. I asked, in that case how do you determine what makes a human a human.
Jill, not all pro-aborts are atheists, mkay?
A human is a human when it is a fully developed bipedal being with homosapien DNA. Something is human when it has human DNA. Therefore, a skin cell is human, whereas a born baby is a human.
A human is a human when it is a fully developed bipedal being with homosapien DNA. Something is human when it has human DNA. Therefore, a skin cell is human, whereas a born baby is a human.
Ahhhhh, it all makes sense now.
Here we were arguing about human vs person vs parasite vs soccer ball vs soup vs chimpanzee and the bottom line comes down to the letter “a”.
“A” human. “A” parasite “A” person “A” soccer ball.
“A”mazing ! Truly !
mk
Oh, before I forget, Are we allowed to kill “A” human? or only humans?
Mk, I do believe you’re willfully twisting my post: and you wonder why most prochoicers don’t take you guys seriously.
A human is a living being. A human whereas human is the noun, indicated an object.
When something is human, the verb is indicates the state of being human: this could be anything. A cell could be human, does that make it a human? A sperm could be human, does that make it a human? Should we campaign to stop guys from jerking off because the sperm is human?
Yes, we should stop all men from masturbation, also condoms are killers…they stop sperm from possibly fertilizing an egg…which could possibly lead to an embryo, to a fetus, to a baby…
and HisMan…you cannot possibly be serious about thinking the church and state should NOT be separate…please tell me that I misinterpreted what you wrote.
the part about masturbation…that was sarcasm, I am all for condoms and masturbation
Mars,
The state should stay out of church affairs. The state should not dictate who or what to beleive in. You know the reason teh Quakers came here in teh first place to escape teh tyranny of teh Church of England whose king was a madman.
The church has every right to speak to moral isses, i.e., laws that affect us in any way it sees fit via the endorsement of political candidates who hold views against homosexuality, abortion, etc.
However, if you think the church and state should be separate, let’s eliminate the government’s power over the church which is simply the 510(c)3 provision of the tax code.
And please don’t tell me that the goverment isn’t contolling the church when I can’t even mention the word God in a prayer before a football game.
No, our country has lost it’s democracy. We are controlled by the tyranny of the few. That’s akin to a dictatorship which you seem to be OK with. I will fight to change it.
Rae,
Hitler and all degrees of murderous hatred like him, including abortion, are prime examples of demonic possession.
Or do you just think his Serotonin levels were out of wack?
“I bet the first thing you would do if you ever had to go to court or find out that you had a terminal disease is to get down on your knees.
Or are you really that confused about Who controls the universe?”
No, if I ever have to go to court, I’ll find the best lawyer I can afford… oh wait, I could just hire myself or my best friend. Cool.
If I’ll ever be diagnosed with a terminal disease (and have consulted as many doctors as my insurance covers), I’ll make the best of the time left. Travel, party and spend as much time with my loved ones as possible.
Tell ya what: I’m not scared of death. Of dying – maybe. But not of death.
And that statement about controlling the universe: Parts of the bible sound more like a script for “Stargate SG-1” (come on, Resurrection?!). You really want me believe in that?
No one is forcing you to believe anything, Ingrid. You can choose to believe what you want about God. And we already know you’ve made your choice so no need for you to clarify.
Jill, you have no right to say that pro-choicers don’t believe in God. I believe in God. I am pro-choice.
I don’t understand what in the world would compel you to say such an ignorant thing. You seem like an intelligent enough woman.
His Man:
Actually it has been discovered that Hitler was in fact mentally ill, though that doesn’t excuse his behavior. And no, it’s not demonic possession, Hitler was just a racist @$$ who managed to get into power via manipulation and mass hysteria.
But I suppose that you think illnesses like schizophrenia can be cured by an exorcism don’t you?
Rae –
“And no, it’s not demonic possession, Hitler was just a racist @$$ who managed to get into power via manipulation and mass hysteria.”
Isn’t that how abortion became legal?

And just in case you want to know. I do believe in demonic posession but I do not believe mental illness qualifies as posession. Because if that was the case I would be posessed. ;-)
Actually studing posession is quite interesting. I started with the story that inspired the story ‘The Exorcist’. I then started digging further and further. Quite interesting stuff. Funny stuff too with how some people tried to fake it.
Hitler was immersed in the occult. Demonic possession is not as far fetched as it seems.
One of satan’s greatest weapons is keeping people from believing in him. He can work his “magic” so much better on people who deny his existence.
mk
Leah, 9:05a, said: “Jill, you have no right to say that pro-choicers don’t believe in God. I believe in God. I am pro-choice.”
Leah, in my 8:28p post last night I was speaking to the pro-abort commenters who not only were claiming not to believe in God but mocking God and those who believe in God.
But tell me, Leah, what God do you believe in? The God of the Bible? The god of Islam? A mish-mosh cherry-picked compilation?
“He can work his “magic” so much better on people who deny his existence.”
Oh, we’re not denying him. We’re actually planning a pro-choice party in hell – good food, music, lots of cool people to discuss the meaning of life with…
Seriously, demonic possession? I believe in magic, but not that kind you get to see on “Charmed” or any other TV show. There are rational explanations for every freaky kind of stuff.
Ingrid,
We’re actually planning a pro-choice party in hell –
Yeah, well, the best laid plans and all that…
Don’t you realize he’s using you?
Are you that blind?
You really think he’s going to reward your “faithfulness”.
Do you have any idea who you’re messing with?
He is yuckin’ it up right now, because he’s got you in the bag.
But enjoy yourself for the moment…
Have you been reading any of the posts that I sent to Samantha on Padre Pio, Medjugorje, Akita Japan, Fatima and Zeuitun Egypt?
Look at those and tell me all about how everything under the sun can be explained scientifically…
MK
Valerie, did you know that part of the Exorcism (from the Exorcist) happened right here on the SLU campus?
What is now our admissions building used to be a mental hospital, where the boy stayed during the exorcism. Creepy stuff. That floor is pretty much abandoned, though they recently have been talking about remodeling for offices up there now.
And you know in the articles a lot of events go unexplained. Red wounds from holy water? “It’s like blushing.” Whatever!
For cryin’ out loud, MK: I don’t even believe that satan exists, so this “You really think he’s going to reward your “faithfulness” is plain BS.
I’ve once read the words “for a well-prepared mind, death is nothing but the next great adventure.” I don’t even know how to explain what kind of “life after” I believe in, but definetely not the idea of heaven or hell and nothing else.
Pip –
No, I didn’t know that. I would be feaking out! I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near that place, even if it did get remodeled.
Superstitious? Me? never!
Haha I kinda liked that legend surrounding SLU. Gave it an edge against all the other Jesuit colleges. Our Jesuits fight demons! Beat that!
Oh, we’re not denying him. We’re actually planning a pro-choice party in hell – good food, music, lots of cool people to discuss the meaning of life with…
Well excuse me for taking what you say as truth. Let me know what other things you say that I shouldn’t believe before I waste my time discussing them.
mk
Why is it that pro-lifers can be as sarcastic as they want, but as soon as a pro-choicer is sarcastic they’re being stupid or rude?
“Our Jesuits fight demons! Beat that!”
Three snaps and a circle!
you go girrrrrll….!!!
pretty sick that some of you would like to see this animal get human rights. Figures, according to evolution chimps are humans. Secular scientist are now trying to change chimps from the pan genus to the homo genus. Thats basically allowing what I would call beastiality between chimp and human because not only are they in the same genus making them genetically human but making their rights human rights. To all those who make fun of God I say I’d rather follow his laws then to have make up laws on what evolution and atheism teaches which is basically do what feels right.
