Quote of the Day 9-13-10
I’ve heard some fathers say they felt a huge load settle on them when their child was born. They weren’t bemoaning the burden, but they simply didn’t feel it until the baby was physically in their arms.
Others begin to feel it the second they see the two pink lines.
~Jeanne Sager, “Husband Sacrifices Life for Pregnant Wife,” The Stir, September 10

I read the article. Brian Wood is a real man.
Nick, Jake, and some of the other pro-choice-to-pressure-their-partners-into-the-dismemberment-of-their-own-unborn-child males here probably would have jerked the wheel left.
Men are wired to protect and take care of their families. It is a burden for my husband to work fulltime so I can stay home. He is honored to do it and considers it a privilege to bear the weight for now.
I remember when I was pregnant with our first the weight of that made my husband want to “grow up”, get busy and provide for his growing family.
A stark contrast to “get rid of it.”
There’s a hormone that contributes to men’s sense of “I need to grow up and be responsible for my family.” It’s called vassopressin. I’ve read up on this hormone and it’s pretty interesting the different things that are said about it.
Men hard hardwired to be the “protectors”, “hunter-gatherers” of the family unit, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I think in some many ways male/female roles help us understand how our bodies work and the different talents we have–not that a man can’t stay at home with the kids (I’ve got a family member who does that, and he does a good job) but they still are hardwired to be the provider/protector in some capacity.
Oh my goodness, what a hero Brian is. His wife Erin sounds like a brave woman. My prayers go out to their family.
As for the circumstances of the accident, the driver of the other car was trying to remove her sweater while driving – her car went out of control in the path of the Woods’ car. My prayers go out to the woman who must live with having caused the accident.
Please people, for your sake and the sake of others – do not change clothes, apply make-up, dial a telephone, eat a burrito or hamburger, or reach for something in the back seat while driving! Laws should be changed to make all of these activities illegal by drivers. These drivers are distracted and slam on the brakes causing multiple rear end collisions. Unfortunately, the person behind them is always at fault under the law and that is not fair.
