New Stanek WND column, “Abortion foes dodge military bullet”

It appears liberals will not only concede placing a timeline for troop withdrawal from Iraq in the emergency defense spending bill, they will also concede loosening military abortion policy.
One news report called the former “a significant concession to Bush and his Republican allies on Capitol Hill.”
The latter is equally significant.
Remarkably, despite a Democrat majority in the House, missing from the defense appropriations bill will be an amendment to fund military abortions overseas.
What makes this remarkable is this will be the first year since 1996 liberals have not attempted to add this provision….
Another event remarkable in that it didn’t happen occurred May 16 when Democrat pro-abort Rep. Michael Michaud failed to submit his amendment on the House floor that would have required all military pharmacies to stock the morning-after pill….
Word is Democrat leadership counted the votes, saw they were short, and told Michaud to spare them all the embarrassment….

They removed everything from the bill… including the pork. It’s suppose to be a “veto proof” no frills military funding.
The Democrats legislate by sticking their wet fingers in the air that they just extricated from their butts and then vote. They don’t even know how to spell the word “principle”.
This bill is a response to their abyssmal poll numbers as a result of Pelosi’s and Reid’s misguided attempts at passing some wacko laws regarding thought crimes, etc., and posturing for the White House. You’d think that Congress had a super majority the way they’re trying to push their Michael Moore inspired agenda down the throats of Americans. I mean their primary goal is to win the White House in ’08 and if they keep it up, the next President will be John McCain. We must not let the Democratic nominee become President. We start now by praying and doing what it takes to defeat the Democratics as this would be disastrous for our cause.
Correction: There are two house bills.
One is a the no frills military spending, absent any amendments, and the other is a package including the katrino and ag pork, and a minimum wage increase… the latter being the Dem’s poker chip for compromise. The two bills will be merged as one after the house circus, passed onto the senate, and negotiations will begin with the whitehouse. Republican leaders expect the compromise bill will be passed so long as the core military spending is there.
Our system is structured to facilitate compromise. Interestingly enough, when ever it happens the media has to assign defeat to one camp or the other. Either the typically unrealistic and stuborn republicans are supposed to have “backed themselves into a corner they can’t get out of” or the Dems, giving a little more priority to accomplishing something as opposed to grand standing, have “capitulated/been taken a blow/ etc….”
The compromise, and surpassing legislative deadlock, is rarely celebrated. That, of course, would not be in harmony with popular sentiments of congres never accomplishing anything.
HisMan, you’re right about those abysmal poll numbers. We hear a lot about Bush’s, but Congress’s is just as bad. From the AP, May 11:
The survey found only 35 percent approve of how Congress is handling its job, down 5 percentage points in a month. That gives lawmakers the same bleak approval rating as Bush, who has been mired at about that level since last fall, including his dip to a record low for the AP-Ipsos poll of 32 percent last January.

Jill,
Pelosi acts as if she has a super majority. That’s a phantom. She’s gotta know her days are numbered because people are recognizing who she really is, a riches-are-for-me-only socialist, wacko, control freak controlled by the likes of a Fidel Castro supporter, Michael Moore. Hello, Hillary?
Bush’s trump card is that he acts on unwavering principle which will always wins out.
We know we are on the right path when we act in integrity. We don’t have to cover our tracks. I don’t believe in compromise, only total victory, especially when life and death issues are on the line. If some Republicans would stop being so wishy-washy on issues and stop being afraid of political correctness, we might get some things done in this country like dismantling Roe v. Wade.
The Democrats use compromise to defeat us. There is no need to compromise with the party of death and immorality. We have the high ground and should use it to our advantage. Also, we should seek any Republicans that are not full of integrity (and it goes directly as to how they treat their marriages) and kick them out. One Rudy Guilaini comes to mind.
During the Clinton administration weren’t attempts made to allow abortion on overseas military bases and rebuffed by military personnel? I recall that doctors and hospital personnel all refused to participate. This mass disobeying of what I believe was a presidential order, was an embarassment for Clinton, but there was nothing he could do. Some theorized it was a massive nose thumbing by military personnel who viewed Clinton with contempt. Whatever, the end result was no abortion on overseas bases except to save the life of the mother.
Mary, this is all I know:
On January 22, 1993, President Clinton’s first day in office:
Reversed years of pro-life progress by issuing five executive orders in one day:
Reversed Title 10 regulations banning abortion referral by federal employees
Repealed Mexico City Policy restricting federal funding of international organizations that work to reverse countries’ abortion laws
Negated ban on funding for fetal tissue transplants
Ordered military hospitals to commit abortions
Asked FDA to “review” the import ban on RU-486
I haven’t researched fallout from his military abortions exec order. That would be interesting to know.
Jill,
That is good news about the Democrats backing off about funding, etc, for military abortions even if it is politically calculated which it obviously is with the Democrats appearing to be moderate for now. There is no question of course that Hillary would seek to re-instate it if the unthinkable occurred, and she is elected president. I have disagreed with President Bush about a lot of things especially illegal immigration (Aaaaaaaaa!), but at least he has held fast on abortion and made two good appointments to the Supreme Court.
Clay
Jill,
As I said I recall there being a mass refusal by overseas military medical personnel to perform abortions. There was nothing Clinton could do except court martial the whole lot of them. Its also possible they had a right not to perform procedures that went against their consciences. I’m not familiar with military law. A few former military people told me it could well have been a collective nose thumbing against Clinton, for whom the military had only contempt.
