Kudos to Nicole Richie
Friend Paris Hilton threw a Beverly Hills, Wizard of Oz-themed (Nicole’s fav) baby shower this past Sunday for expectant parents Nicole Richie and boyfriend Joel Madden. Nicole is due in January.
But guests were told beforehand their gifts would be donated via the newly created Richie Madden Children’s foundation to help moms in need.
Very cool.
There is no website yet, but a press release announcing the formation of the charitable organization states….
Nicole would like to invite friends, family and fans across America to participate in the moms-in-need program and highly publicized baby shower. The Richie Madden Children’s Foundation will create and promote an online registry to inspire the purchases of items for moms and their families in need. Anyone in the country will be able buy from the registry on her behalf for the clinic. The registry link will live on the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation website for at least six months and will be updated regularly based on the needs of the LA Free Clinic and other participating clinics.
Hollyscoop adds, “Next month, their charity will also donate 100 Mom-to-Be kits to the Los Angeles Free Clinic.”
Richie acknowledged having a “bad ‘pattern’ in her life that was only saved by her child not yet born, who some would consider a nonentity, a blob. She told Diane Sawyer in an August 2 interview:
I owe the baby my life. I owe this baby everything and I have a responsibility now. Besides being responsible for myself, I’m now responsible for someone else. And I have to set the right examples. I have to really be someone that I would want my child to look up to.
She is.
According to ABC, Madden, who is lead singer for the band Good Charlotte, reads his Bible and sports multiple tattoos of Jesus. He told Seventeen magazine in 2005:

Each day, I’d read and think a lot. I also started thinking about God again for the first time in years. My mom is a devout Christian, but I used to be like, Forget about what God wants, I’ll do what I want. Yet once I thought about what I really wanted, I realized it was to get close to God. And I knew that I had to stop the things I was doing because God wanted me to respect myself.

Sorry, I’m not buying that these two are “Christians.”
It takes a lot more than throwing other peoples money around to prove it.
Nonetheless, Andrew- I’m pleased to see them doing something that isn’t 100% self-interested.
Right. So plastering their good works in the media has nothing to do with self-interest…
Andrew, Andrew. My, Mr. Grumpy, we’re cynical this morning! Baby keep you up all night? :)
The positive way to look at that would be they wanted to let as many people know about their cause as possible so as to help, and the shower was a kick-off.
Yes, but what happens if these two combine their superior genetic qualities and create a master race of uber-humans who enslave us all using their limitless intellectual capacity and ruthless physical domination?
Oh wait – it’s Nicole Richie and Joel Madden.
Nevermind…
I applaud their good efforts and Richie’s statement about the baby saving her life, and her confession that she must now be responsible for the baby. She is doing the right thing by keeping the baby and taking LIFE seriously.
I really thought nicole richie was one of the most annoying hollywood stars out there before she got pregnant. I do hope she is genuine with her turn-around now that she is becoming a mother. This cause that her and her boyfriend are supporting are a great thing though. If I were mega-rich I would do this too. I would like to create an “adopt a single mom” kind of program where you offer them mentoring. Many of these women are young with no support,direction, or knowledge about parenting so offering them emotional help is very important too.
Baby’s fine, thanks for asking. She’s sleeping through the night like an angel..
The whole baby-shower thing is fine, but I am confused how you can say she is a good model for her child to look up to when she is sleeping around. Exactly how long will this “relationship” last?
But Jill, don’t you think Nicole Richie is a poor role model for being knocked-up and unwed? Or is it only highly successful, mature, black actresses who get to be smeared as “poor role models” for their out-of-wedlock pregnancies?
OMG, This is tooooo weird. I had a dream about Nicole R. last night. God strike me dead if I’m lying!! She and I were jogging together. lol!
Right. So plastering their good works in the media has nothing to do with self-interest…
Note that I said 100% self-interested. Coming up with a charity and promoting it involved thinking about someone other than themselves for about 2 seconds.
Don’t be so crabby! You know we love you! :)
AAAAWWWWW, I’ve just read what they are doing with the gifts. I don’t care what people say about her. She’s hilarious, and I love her!
TP,
Trying to turn it into a race topic? Jill said it makes Halle Barry look like a poor role model for black women who statistically have the highest out-of-wedlock pregnancies. I don’t see Halle Barry starting any organizations to help out poor, unwed mothers in the projects.
P.S. The ONLY person it matters to if you are a good role model is your child..not the rest of the freaking world. I frankly don’t care WHAT the rest of the world thinks of me as long as my daughter sees the right things from me. And starting this organization is advocating life, which is a wonderful message to be sending to your child.
I guess my point is that we don’t need to promote and hype people whose motivations are less than completely honest. I thought the articles that were linked were just completely ridiculous and yet people salivate over every word they say..
These people live for media attention and the limelight. Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie?! Come on…
Why is everyone a poor role model? The woman has tons of $$, and she will be a great mother. Who would a good role model be?
Yeah, but if they’re sending the RIGHT message..what’s wrong with talking about it? We talk enough when they’re doing something stupid, why not when they do something good?
I’m sure that Hallie Berry and Nicole will marry.
Hey Elizabeth, why talk about them at all?
Well, if they are doing something for someone less fortunate, let them, and they deserve credit. It’s these dog gone snobs who do NOTHING for anyone who irritate me.
Hey Andrew, ask Jill, this is her site..she can talk about whoever she wants to.
And people CAN change their ways.
I’m asking you, you’re the one defending them..
No, I’m defending the right to talk about them.
Geesh, it’s not that deep. It was just nice to hear about someone helping the less fortunate. Would you have preferred to hear that she was keeping all of the gifts for herself?
Heather, I agree. Some people just come on here to argue or say something negative just for the fact that it’s a pro-life site.
Brittany Spears had a lot of money too. Now she’s not allowed to drive with her kids in the car and has supervised visitation. Way to go famous celebrities.
No one knows if she’s going to be a good mom or not. Let’s not jump to conclusions.
The woman has tons of $$, and she will be a great mother.
I don’t think money has anything to do with being a good mother.
I’ve heard of Nicole Richie but don’t know anything about her. I’ve only heard her name…and I’ve never heard of Dave Whatever.
But if you say they are famous, and they are doin’ something good for “life” then what the heck. Maybe some other self interested celebs will start a trend…you know, babies are good. Everyone should have one!?!
Well, look at the countless numbers of celebrities who have aborted. Why? Because they were selfish! Money aside, at least she didn’t have an abortion. Besides, why do wealthy celebs abort? Cuz it’s all about ME, ME, ME, ME, ME!!!!!!
Let’s be fair. Here we have a celebrity who wants her baby, she loves her baby, and she is donating to the less fortunate. Why knock her?
Because she’s an idiot. And she shouldn’t be a mother. *shrugs* My opinion at least.
Well, look at the countless numbers of celebrities who have aborted. Why? Because they were selfish! Money aside, at least she didn’t have an abortion. Besides, why do wealthy celebs abort? Cuz it’s all about ME, ME, ME, ME, ME!!!!!!

Yeah. Isn’t it great when people like Courtney Love, Britney Spears and Anna Nicole have children?
There’s nothing quite like dragging helpless, vulnerable children into your own flaming trainwreck!
This is the BEST!
Who decides if you’re scum? YOUR BABY!

Babies may make social judgments
By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer
1 hour, 7 minutes ago
WASHINGTON – Even infants can tell the difference between naughty and nice playmates, and know which to choose, a new study finds.
Babies as young as 6 to 10 months old showed crucial social judging skills before they could talk, according to a study by researchers at Yale University’s Infant Cognition Center published in Thursday’s journal Nature.
The infants watched a googly-eyed wooden toy trying to climb roller-coaster hills and then another googly-eyed toy come by and either help it over the mountain or push it backward. They then were presented with the toys to see which they would play with.
Nearly every baby picked the helpful toy over the bad one.
The babies also chose neutral toys
Ohh Erin,
Yes, she has made mistakes but does that mean people can’t turn their life around and end up being a good mother? I’m pretty sure they can, I know I sure am. And you should have seen my big flaming trainwreck of a life before I had my daughter. She made me change…and I am no longer a trainwreck. You guys will find any justification for taking a life. They’re either too poor or too rich..let’s face it, you just don’t value unborn babies lives.
I think it is great that they are trying to be better people. Maybe it is for show, who knows? It is definitely possible that the responsibilities of being a parent have changed them for the better. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
I remember my mother getting on my case because I said something. She said, in a negative tone of voice, “I remember when you were 16 and you said, ( fill in stupid comment here)”
I told her so what if I was a complete jerk, it doesn’t mean I am not allowed to ever do anything right for the rest of my life.
Acting stupid, being wrong, selfish, whatever is not permanent or exclusive. People can still do good even if not everything they do is good. I don’t know any perfect people or any that I would say could never do better.
Yeah. Isn’t it great when people like Courtney Love, Britney Spears and Anna Nicole have children?

Wow, and I thought Zeke was judgemental.
I’ve had several other people come up to me during antiabortion protests and tell me how choosing life for their unexpected babies put their own lives on a different, and much better, trajectory.
They had to let go of lots of destructive things, substance abuse and other stuff, to free their hands, so to speak, to care for the baby.
It’s amazing what a “helpless, vulnerable child” can do to avert a total flaming trainwreck, given the chance…but then that depends on who is driving the train. Anyone with a fully developed brain stem and a functioning conscience will hit the brakes as hard as (s)he safely can as soon as the child’s presence is detected…
Andrew, tp: I had a last line I added and deleted 3x which said, “But I do wish they’d get married.” I just decided to give them credit for doing something nice without any “buts.” A “but” negates whatever was said before it.
Andrew, you worked for the master of organizational promotion, come on. I still say you’re abnormally crabby today… :)
No reason why people can’t change for the better, but there still are the “train wrecks” that we see.
To some extent I’m suspicious of “jailhouse conversions” as with some of what Paris has said. I think there is the presumption there that the person will magically change, and in practice it rarely works out that way, i.e. Britney Spears.
Sort of like, “If I marry him (or her) he’ll change….”
Wow, and I thought Zeke was judgemental.

Yes, Hippie, my aversion to handing helpless infants over to crack whores pretty much makes me a pursed-lipped, self-righteous tight azz.
I wear my title proudly.
If there were a camera rolling every time we made a mistake, our detractors could probably find a way to paint us all as trainwrecks. I don’t defend bad behavior, but let’s not condemn good behavior!
Oh, come on. The ONLY reason you are glorifying this woman is because she is pregnant. She has done nothing of value with her life except, according to you, gotten pregnant. Any woman(physically able) can get pregnant. It doesn’t mean she isn’t still one of the most idiotic bimbos on the planet. I’m sorry, but she’s a dumb lady who does stupid things. Having a baby doesn’t change that, and I’m surely not going to change my opinion of her just because she’s knocked up.
Laura,
Courtney Love, Britney Spears and Anna Nicole are “crack whores”?
Who knew?

“Crack Whore” has pretty much become a catch-all for anyone willing to throw away their entire life in order to maintain a substance abuse habit.
Americans tend to be very forgiving to those who actually throw themselves into treatment and try hard.
(Hell, the neocons fargave Rush, and that was after he had espoused mandatory prison time for drug offenses for YEARS…)
Trust me, if I thought they’d lock me up at “Promises” for 28 days, I’d start hittin’ the pipe myself. It’s so posh.
WTF?
Okay, if the world is going mad, it’s nice to see it going mad in a way that spills some good to moms in need.
If the world is going mad, then there’s no reason for people to wear backwards baseball caps…
If not, same deal.
I know you’re not comparing FF to her . . .
I’m in a fine mood, but was surprised you agreed she was someone to look up to, that’s all. Had to call you on that . . .
So, rich women who have kids are “crack whores” and poor women who have kids are “welfare suckers.”..*sigh* who can win?
It just seems that some of you pro choicers would just be delighted had she decided to abort. Some of you always find a reason.

No. Women who value their substance abuse habit to the exclusion of all else are crack whores. Women who fail to provide for the financial well-being of their children to the detriment of hard-working taxpayers are Welfare-suckers.
I know plenty of rich women and poor women who take fabulous care of their children, and would never qualify for either camp.
So what? At least pro lifers don’t put some stupid petition out in a magazine.. “We Had Abortions.”..and had 5000 signatures of women/celebrities, who aborted with pride. [Ms. Magazine] What kind of a stunt was that? What does it prove? If a developing Z/E/F isn’t human, it doesn’t leave a thing to talk about. Why sign a petition? Would you sign a petition that read “I Did Nothing Wrong.”??
They must know that there is something WRONG with abortion.
So what? At least pro lifers don’t put some stupid petition out in a magazine..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hon, in 2004 Silent No More and their affiliates tried to gather 1700 signatures by women who claimed to have been harmed by aboertion http://www.afterabortion.info/petition/
They failed.
The Silent No More gathering on the steps of the Supreme Court last year drew 22 women. The silent No More demonstration at the Florida State House drew 8.
The VAST majority of women who choose abortion were happy to have the privledge, and more than pleased with the result. Get used to it.
“The ONLY reason you are glorifying this woman is because she is pregnant. She has done nothing of value with her life except, according to you, gotten pregnant. Any woman(physically able) can get pregnant.”
Erin, Erin. You’re right. Just about any woman can get pregnant.
That she is pregnant is not the ONLY reason we’re applauding her.
She’s recognizing the unexpected virtues that allowing her baby to live will bring. You know, like responsibility, maturity, helping the less fortunate etc.
She’s using her celebrity status to help in some small way moms who choose life but need some support.
She’s going beyond the ME to the OTHER of pro life-ism, something I WISH you had arrived at months ago. Heck, if you had decided to let Lillith live, we’d probably be applauding you, too.
Laura, you were proven wrong by Valerie on that one before. BTW, where is Valerie?
Even Nicole Richie told Tyra Banks “I have NO idea why anyone is even interested in me.” when questioned about the excessive amount of Paparazzi following her. She admits she shouldn’t even be famous. So, she can laugh at herself. The fact that she is giving to the less fortunate is what I like about her.
“I’m sorry, but she’s a dumb lady who does stupid things. Having a baby doesn’t change that…”
How would you know? Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.
Concur, Elizabeth??
You’re certainly entitled to valuate Nicole as “one of the most idiotic bimbos on the planet”. And she very well may have been. I think she recognizes that.
Let the future decide whether she’ll remain that way, Erin. In the meantime, she has a baby to cherish.
Support her “choice”, will ya?
Lord, what poverty.
carder, hello!! Now, I thought that being pro choice also included keeping the baby! It seems that when someone decides to do that, they are suddenly too rich, too poor, too old, too thin, too dumb, too idiotic, too unattractive, too drug ridden, too sleazy, etc. Choice people…Choice.
OR does “Choice” only mean the choice to have an abortion?
Heather, it’s crossed my mind more times than you know.
carder, I’m beginning to see a pattern.
It just seems that some of you pro choicers would just be delighted had she decided to abort. Some of you always find a reason.
Posted by: heather at November 21, 2007 5:48 PM
…………………………………………
Prove that she hasn’t had 20 abortions prior to this pregnancy.
Also, I’m pretty sure she’s not throwing HER money at these charities. It’s her daddies money. Which kinda robs it of its meaning, dontcha think?
Carder, also, why should they still need this stuff? According to you guys, a Crisis Pregnancy Center should be able to help a single mom who didn’t abort at every possible intersection. Unless, you know…maybe it’s actually HARD?
Haha Carder I definitely concur. I wish I could scroll down the list of the idiotic things I did before I got pregnant.(However, I am sure they would be used against me by many of the sarcastic, snipy PCer’s in here) Then BAM! There it was…my ONLY chance I knew I would ever get to save myself. And I sure as all hell took it and held on for dear life…sometimes I’m sure I am still hanging on. NOW, I have something to hang onto. Her name is Gabriella.
If it takes having a child to make you responsible, you’re not truly responsible.
Elizabeth,
I’m not kidding here…that is the most angelic, beautiful baby I have ever seen in my life!!!
Can I hold her????
Erin,
The child doesn’t make you responsible…It’s the responsiblity OF having a child and therefore WANTING to be responsible that makes you responsible. Basic human motherly instincts!
You’re certainly entitled to valuate Nicole as “one of the most idiotic bimbos on the planet”. And she very well may have been. I think she recognizes that.
Let the future decide whether she’ll remain that way, Erin. In the meantime, she has a baby to cherish.
Dang, Carder, that was well said. I love Erin but here’s hoping that Nicole does well with her baby, and indeed the future may bring surprises (or not).
Doug
Elizabeth, very, very good post. I think we’ve all done “dumb” things. If, for you, that was “saving” you, then ain’t a damn thing wrong with that at all.
No sarcasm or snippiness from me on this one – I have no reason to doubt you. Not to say it’d be the same for other people but I sure wish you and Gabriella good luck.
AB Laura is right – that’s a fantastic, dear picture.
Doug
Look, I’m not HOPING that things turn out messed up. I’m just going on what tends to. Brittney Spears? That went well. I’m not saying she should have aborted, or anything. I’m just projecting that this woman is being praised for being kinda promiscuous and irresponsible. The only reason the lifers are going on about her is because she didn’t have an abortion. Let’s wait till this thing is born and then lets see what happens. She gets no kudos from me until she actually proves herself.
Doug…ANGELIC!!!
Erin,
“This thing”???
It?
“Thing” “It” Erin? IT’S a baby! Goodness you can’t even say the word can you? Which I find interesting cause my biology book (ironically I’m reading about reproduction and development) defines a fetus as: “The stage of a developing human from the 9th week until birth.” Hmmm….a science textbook admits that it is a human..not an it or a thing..why can’t you?
Doug, and AB Laura, Thank you! Those were her baptism pictures when she was a wee little baby..she’s much bigger now but, Laura I’m sure she’d be glad to play with you! My aunt crocheted her baptismal gown..it was just beautiful!
And Erin, you’re right, though. Without my daughter I really wouldn’t be responsible at all. But that does not disregard any of the responsibility I have now as her mother. I am incredibly responsible now and very self-motivated because I know I HAVE to be for her. I know I HAVE to get my degree and a good career so I can provide my daughter with her needs and some of her wants. She is my motivation in life and I have no problem admitting that I would be a jacka** if it weren’t for her. She taught me what it means to put someone else before your own wants and taught me that whatever problems I used to stress over don’t really amount to a hill of beans. Sometimes it gets really, really hard to work as hard as I do and be as responsible as I AM. But then I think, I can’t just give up on her, without me, she’s lost. Her father already gave up on her before he even knew her, and I would NEVER do that to her.
Erin,
No, “it”
Elizabeth,
Please tell your grandmother that I truly admire her work. I crochet blankets, and they don’t turn out that well..they are warm, though. I wouldn’t dare try anything that wasn’t a straight line!!! I couldn’t imagine Gabriella dressed in that picture with anything else. Absolutely gorgeous.
Elizabeth, you will have some tough times ahead, as we all do, but NEVER lose your faith in God. He takes the place of the “biological father” after abandonment. God WILL provide and He WILL take care of you and your precious daughter. You WILL be amazed at how He works and what He will do for you both…you will NEVER be able to deny Him….
-from experience, I write this to you & Gabriella with love…. :)
Oh. Mah. Gawd.
CHILL OUT. When she pops it out, it will be a baby. Right now it’s a fetus. IT is a fetus. IT.
Jeez, sorry.
The only pro lifers are going on about her is because she didn’t have an abortion…Right. Who is that beautiful little baby? Elizabeth, is that your daughter? I’ll have to go get another look.
Yep, Heather she’s my pride and joy..that was taken when she was 2-3 months old in her baptism gown..She’s now almost 2 and just as adorable (maybe even more so) then in that picture.
OOOPS, forgot to write my name in before I hit post..the anonymous is me.
What is a pro choicers ideal situation for having a child? I mean, you guys harp on the poor. Now you’re harping on a rich woman.
The ideal situation for having a child is to be able to provide for it (meaning you are financially stable, not rich) and can give it lots of love.
Some people harp on the poor because some of them can’t earn enough money (if, at all) to provide basic needs. Unfortunetly, sometimes love is not enough to raise a child. Some people take it on faith and hope that “something comes up”, but I prefer not to take any chances.
And we are harping on this particular rich woman because she isn’t exactly the best role model for children…getting high on Vicodin and driving on the wrong side of the freeway is just a tad bit worrisome.
“Carder, also, why should they still need this stuff?”
“They” as in the mommy and daddy?
She probably doesn’t. But seeing as how she’s a first time mom, chances are she didn’t have a stash of diapers or a crib in her closet prior to *oops*.
“Carder, also, why should they still need this stuff?”
“According to you guys, a Crisis Pregnancy Center should be able to help a single mom who didn’t abort at every possible intersection. Unless, you know…maybe it’s actually HARD?”
If you can find a CPC that has the gobs of money anywhere near the likes of Planned Parenthood funding and profit, then I will definitely shut up.
However, since none come to mind, some financial support would probably be appreciated.
No one’s denying that it’s not hard, Erin, but some of the wealthy having abortions (and I know this maybe a bit of a presumption) certainly don’t have $ to worry about when it comes to providing for their baby-in-the-making.
“I’m just projecting that this woman is being praised for being kinda promiscuous and irresponsible.”
Wrong. Your next statement is what hits it on the nose.
“The only reason the lifers are going on about her is because she didn’t have an abortion.”
Right. And I’ll add that she is publicly stating that because of this gift of life she’s been presented, she’s not copping out. She’s vowed to change what Nicole needs to change about herself. And hopefully help others, I repeat,OTHERS. You know, the “Wake-up Call”. Some folks wake up. Some just roll over and keep on snoring.
I sense disdain for young humans from you Erin. If you stand for choice, then respect her choice.
You might probably learn something.
I respect her choice. I don’t respect HER. There’s a difference.
Has she been busted for driving high on Vicodin while pregnant? Has she been busted for substance abuse while pregnant? Don’t keep judging her for a mistake. Besides, a heck of a lot of women who have aborted become mothers. Should I hold their past irresponsibility against them forever?
I’ll stop holding it against her when she proves herself an apt mother. When her child is about a year old, and her mother hasn’t ended up in rehab or stuck him or her with a nanny all the time, I’ll gladly give her some respect for that. I’m just not rushing into things.
One more thing: How do you know what life is gonna throw your way? I knew a lady who was married with 2 kids. That’s just “perfect.”..Her husband hung himself several days after the birth of their second child. Now what? What do we do when things are no longer “perfect.”
Hello, Erin. Happy holiday. I gotta go in a minute.
Okay. Fair enough. So, she had some issues in the past, but point me to someone who doesn’t. Just one person. It doesn’t exist. It just doesn’t. So, should we all just have abortions? Okay. Gotta go. Happy holiday to you too, carder.
Erin,
Why do you feel so entitled that she has to prove ANYTHING to you? Guess what, she probably couldn’t give a sh** about your approval of her. You, on the other hand, seem to think your approval matters. It doesn’t. You talk about PLer’s being judgemental..go look at yourself. If she wants to be a druggy and go to rehab…why do YOU get to say anything about it? Wait a minute..isn’t that her “choice?” You’re all about the support of choice aren’t you? Ohh, maybe I misunderstood…you seem to be only approving of choices that fall in line with YOUR beliefs. I got it now. She is keeping her baby and attempting to turn her life around. In your mind, she should just abort and go back to living her dumb lifestyle cause that’s what people expect of her..after all..that’s what you would do now isn’t it?
*headdesk*
I give up.
She’s in the public eye. She is subjecting herself to this kind of scrutiny. I DON’T CARE THAT SHE’S GONNA HAVE A BABY. I care that at no point in her life previous to getting knocked up has she demonstrated remotely near the capacity for responsibility it takes to raise a kid. Some people, like you, Elizabeth, can rise to the occasion. Some people, like Brittney Spears, can’t. I’m not going to assume that she’ll be a wonderful mother.
My opinion is that people should have babies when they’re ready to have babies. We’ll find out if she was ready after it’s born. Not yet. Sorry.
Nicole Richie showers 100 needy moms with gifts
I recently reported that pregnant parents Nicole Richie and John Madden had created the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation to provide items for moms and families in need, particularly at the LA Free Clinic. In fact, Richie designated all gifts given…
