Ad advice needed
I received the following email from a fellow named Drake Stillborn this morning:
You are completely insane. And disgusting.
I would like to advertise on your site, but I am not sure which of our products to promote to your readers.
Perhaps torches and pitchforks. Our wholesale company carries many such products.
But business is business. Even your demographic needs products. Even though your writing should place you in an mental institution and perhaps jail, depending on whether or not you actually act on your words. (Free speech is great, even when hate speech is involved.) I doubt you do.
But back to your demographic: Hypocrites. Atavistic rapine beasts. The sort of people who hopefully will get sued for their actions, just like one of your articles requests. I’m sure that’s exactly what an old woman ought to spend her time doing. Suing mental cases, seriously ill people, instead of enjoying the last years of her life.
So anyway, how much for ad space?
Well, my hypocritical, atavistic rapine beast readers, what products would you suggest that Mr. Stillborn might post on this site? This old woman’s mind is too befuddled to think this morning.
Jill Stanek is a nurse turned speaker, columnist and blogger, a national figure in the effort to protect both preborn and postborn innocent human life.

Ok Jill: Maybe we could have a question about the Day of Silence and violence against homosexual children and teens.
I know we’ve disscused this before but I think it would be interesting to post a question about people who claim to live a happy child-free lifestyle. Why do people on this site choose to have or not have children? Also is it neccesary to have children to leave a legacy or to be fulfilled? I think we would get a lot of interesting feedback.

Jess, regarding your “Day of Silence” idea: I think that’s a great topic.
Personally I think it’s stupid. The teachers are starting to do it in my school district and I think it’s like a free day for them. I don’t like the kids doing it either. There is a time and a place for it and school is neither the time nor the place. Go hold a protest somewhere and I’m behind you 100%.
BUT if a school does allow it, things should go both ways. A girl at one of the HS in a neighboring district was “disciplined” for wearing a T-shirt on the “Silence” day that said “Be happy, not gay.” If one side gets to protest so should the other.
You can’t tell someone just to not be gay. it’s not a choice, trust me if it was do you think so many people would kill themselves because they were gay? What if her shirt said “Be smart, not black” or be “Be cool, not white.”

How about: Do you think it’s possible for atheists to be truly pro-life? I’ve heard many Christians say that atheists cannot possibly be truly pro-life because there is no God in their opinion to bestow value/sacredness upon humans so their opinions are completely subjective and therefore false. Bad logic I know, but I *have* heard that before.
Or: Some pro-lifers allow abortions in the event the mother’s life is at risk, what constitutes the mother’s life is at risk? Is it if she has a potentially fatal disease like cancer and she needs treatment ASAP and there is no way to prematurely deliver (though yes, I know there are cases in which cancer treatment has been done while the woman was pregnant and the baby survived with little to no complications…speaking generally), or would it be something like severe mental illness, by staying pregnant, the woman has to stop taking her anti-psychotics or anti-depressants and may be on the verge of suicide, would that constitute “life at risk”?

Carrie, great question. Me too. Also, PJ mom mentioned something about men, abortion and discrimination. Face it. Not all men are heartless ogres who pressure women to abort. I know lots of men who would love to be fathers. Unfortunatly, they had no choice, and their girlfriends/wives had abortions.
I say send Jess all of the prolife literature she can handle!! :) Oh, and a torch and a pitchfork too of course.

Anyime, Jess! As a fairly recent convert from “pro-choice” to pro-life, the difference is, I’ve found, marked.
PJ mom, when you were PC, were you an angry person? Did pro lifers offend you? I used to be PC, but I’d never had an abortion. That’s why I was wondering.
Correction: I was always morally oppossed to abortion, but I used to think that an abortion was better than a woman having an unwanted child.

No, I was not the “angry PCer” type. I was more of the politically correct variety who just basically avoided any discussion of the issue or any information that would possibly convince me otherwise. I didn’t want to talk about it. Period.
PJ mama, got it. Those are the types of PCers I have dealt with. They don’t get angry, but they still maintain that their “choice” was a good one.
It’s kind of like talking to a wall, no?
My mom is still like that. She never had an abortion, but when we get into discussions and I start to make inescapably valid points and ask her questions that make her question her deeply held pro-choice beliefs, she simply cuts off the discussion and insists on changing the subject. Can’t blame her, really. I did it for many years. She’s just not there yet. Plus, you don’t really want to let it get too ugly when it’s family.
…..or friends. Words can wound.
yes, heather. thanks for saying that because I should have also said that no matter WHO I’m discussing abortion with, I always “try” to keep in mind two things when choosing my words;
1. I try to remember that the person to whom I am speaking is a human being, and most likely truly believes what they are saying to be true, and most likely has no malicious reasons for their beliefs. They are simply mis-informed.
2. I try to keep in mind that I am not privy to the person’s history with abortion. A woman to whom I am speaking may have had an abortion, but will be very unlikely to reveal that to me. Certain words and attitudes can cut like knives to a post-abortive mother. Not that I feel that I have to lie or omit crucial information, but I view her in that context and choose my words and tone carefully so as not to put her on the defensive straight away. Same for men.
However, it’s difficult to do this on the internet because you can’t see the person’s face. As we know with abortion, not having to see a person’s pain makes it much easier to hurt them. The internet is a great thing for free speech but it also removes all social graces that have their place, too.
