11th hour: Notre Dame newspaper backs out of ad
I wrote yesterday a full page color ad placed by Citizens for a Pro-Life Society was scheduled to run in today’s Notre Dame school newspaper, The Observer. Late yesterday CPLC’s president, Dr. Monica Miller, received word the ad wasn’t going to run, even though it had already been approved and the required check for $1,570 sent. Someone got cold feet:

This is atrocious. Notre Dame is censoring the truth about abortion, while welcoming and honoring our President of the United States who approves every part of it, including partial birth abortion and infanticide of abortion survivors.

wow! Now I’ve heard everything. A Catholic university newspaper thinks pictures of babies dead from abortion are too graphic.
They admit the truth is powerful, yet they can’t run it?
But the Vagina Monologues weren’t too graphic were they Fr. Jenkins?
This university should be stripped of its name and should no longer be considered a Catholic institution. It’s neither Catholic nor an institute of “higher learning”.

Too many people think hiding the injustice being perpetrated on these babies is “easier” than confrontation with the barbaric people who support this. They’ll be held to the light on judgement day when Jesus Christ holds them to account for being enablers to a society that permits the slaughter of the unborn.

I am crying for Jacob — I feel as if he was reaching out to the ND Observer and pleading for their help — pleading that the screams no longer be silent — to give him a voice!! The paper’s name should be The Obscurer — for they are helping to hide the truth of this evil! How can they sleep at night — how can they not know that thousands more will be slaughtered because of their cowardice!! Shame on them for turning their back on Jacob and treating this precious child — this beautiful, wonderful gift of life — like an annoying, little cockroach!! Please, Almighty and All Powerful God — give them Your Strength and Your Courage and Your Wisdom to let the screams of the innocents be heard! Impress upon them the gravity of their evil actions and make it so that they cannot go another second without giving Jacob a voice for the murdered innocents!! Please forgive them — for they must be clueless as to what they are doing!! I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ, AMEN!!
Dr. Miller should consider using less exclamation points when trying to get her point across.
I think the ad is great and she should definitely call to try to persuade them to run it, but if I’m the paper manager I’m reading her email and probably freaking out because I don’t know if she’s going to scream at me on the phone.
How can it even be considered a good idea to respond with that? Whatever happened to making a calm rational argument. Perhaps Dr. Miller’s call today will be calm, but you couldn’t tell because of this email..
Greg, I think she was probably taken aback. Her email seems evidence of this. I agree though that a more rational and coherent response was merited. Especially from someone with a PHD behind their name.

This just proves how powerful this imagery is and how hard Satan is working to keep it out of sight.

The ad is too graphic to run in ANY paper, regardless of its political affiliation. Papers sell by their ads: with the way newspapers are going, a paper simply can’t run things like that. As someone who’s worked on student newspapers, often students, even the editors, have absolutely no say over what goes on.
Also, Dr. Miller’s reaction is ridiculous, over-merited, and frankly, I’d be tempted to cancel the ad just based on that reaction. Usually, when I get e-mails written as such, I automatically delete them and block the sender, regardless of what the text is. Particularly from someone with a ‘Dr.” in front of their name, she really ought to know better, and show some modicum of intelligence and professionalism.
When an undergrad student (assumedly) is able to voice more professionalism in an e-mail than a doctor…..

I cannot believe what I am reading! People are attacking Dr. Miller for being upset that The Observer chickened out after they said they would run the ad! She was clipped at the knees by them and was probably holding back quite a bit when she wrote and sent the email. Her upset is very understandable and I am proud to have her represent the cause.
I believe the ad is TAME compared to the TRUTH truck’s images. Are they afraid someone might get distraught? Or someone might relive an abortion they didn’t want? Or someone might want to go to a CPC to a Post Abortion support group?

Good questions. Should these concerns be considered before posting an explicit ad in ANY situation? I’m curious. Maybe a woman who has had an abortion and regrets it or a woman who is a counselor for post-abortive women could comment.
I don’t know much about the Observer. If they get significant advertising revenue, they may be worried about turning off other advertisers. That’s my guess about what’s happening here.

The truth of these pictures used to make me so angry. I was in denial. I avoided them as much as I could. When the truth of what I had done to my baby in the abortion was realized the grief was immediate. I purposely went to sites with these pictures and grieved over the torn and mangled bodies and imagined the last moments of my daughter.

I don’t think they are wondering what effect these pictures will have on postabortive moms though.

This is an abyssmal testimony to the fact that Notre Dame has surrendered it’s soul to darkness.

Please allow me to explain the great emotion and excalmation marks on the email response that I sent to the ND Observer. I see that some of those who have read my memo are repulsed at my gut reaction. It’s really rather ironic because 99 percent of the time I strive for intellectual argument in response to those who oppose the pro-life cause or who try to block the truth about the injustice of abortion. That is certainly the tone of the censored ad itself.
Please know that my memo is articulated the way that it is because of the real insult this censorship represents. I sent the ad to the ND paper last Thursday. They had no problem with it. I was given the impression that this ad was going to see the light of day. I was eager to have the truth about abortion exposed in light of the honor that ND is about to bestow on our president who supports the law that sent this baby to his death. Now it’s all reversed–photos are “too graphic.” I took this baby out of the trash myself. Thus perhaps my response to hiding him, in light of the ND controversy, is more viseral. Once again injustice prevails and the truth cannot be seen. Sorry, but it is all quite maddening. You need to know my personal, exceptional disappointment in all of this.
But ultimately it’s not about how I responded to the ND memo– it’s about Jacob– and the other aborted 50 million like him. We should keep the focus of these memos on that. Bless you all!

This ad is disgraceful. As a pro-lifer, I’m appalled that anyone would use the corpse of a beautiful baby for gain. Have you no respect for life, for our dead? There are more humane ways to do good works.
There is little argument for converting the dignity of the deceased into utility. People are people, not tools. Please consider this thought, and please reconsider your tactics, as I know they are in good faith.
The respect comes from digging this little boys body out of the trash where he was dumped with other aborted babies, naming him Jacob and giving him a proper funeral. The gain is to show the world the horrifying result of abortion.

Quite the understatement if you ask me. We live in a world that is truly gone mad, when we have Catholic universities and Catholic priests honoring vehemently proabortion/culture of death politicians, with a Doctor of Laws, no less.

Carla, I understand the respect in burying an aborted baby. However, I’m saying that even the gain of showing x people a fetus doesn’t trump the dignity each baby deserves. The effect of a picture of a fetus is variable. Who knows how much it will really help? So I would err on the side of not engaging in the public displaying of deceased life in this and most cases, and we should search for methods that are less extreme and more humane.

Of course the dignity of the baby is of utmost importance. Jacob’s dead body is proof of the complete disregard that abortionists have for the unborn. When women are told lies that the baby is “just a clump of cells”, how will they know the truth unless they are shown the truth?

Michael, I think Dr Miller said it best in her ad: For many, the victims of abortion are not real, they remain distant, remote and unseen.
Baby Jacob’s dignity was taken by the abortionist who dismembered him alive and discarded him like an old newspaper. He lost his dignity before Dr Miller got involved, Michael.
What Dr Miller did IMHO was to convey his humanity. She brings him out of the realm of abstract choice and gives him a visible–if undignified–place among us as a human being. Dr Miller cannot restore the dignity Baby Jacob lost. But she can show his humanity, which I believe is far more powerful than reading nicey nice words that tell me he had fingers and toes.
I think it’s important to show these images. And I say that as someone who’s spent most of my life in the proabortion camp.

This is the same backwards logic that the PETA types use to justify using pictures of slaughtered animal carcasses to promote their cause. It hasn’t helped them further their goals any, why do pro-lifers think they’ll have any more success? These are shock images, plain and simple. What tactic will the pro-life movement co-opt from the animal rights movement next? Dumping buckets of blood on abortion doctors?
I’d also like to note that dumpster-diving at an abortion clinic, retrieving an aborted fetus, and giving it a name is possibly the most morbid, appalling thing I’ve yet seen on this site.

If the tactic is counter productive and you see nothing wrong with killing a ‘HUMAN’ fetus and even see good in the barabarism, then why are you coming around here warning us that we are hurting the cause you want to see fail?

How about both acts in conjunction with each other? Maybe pro-lifers really are the extremists they’re being depicted as in certain controversial DHS reports if a woman digging around in the trash at an abortion clinic and recovering remnants of aborted fetuses to promote her political cause is seen as perfectly acceptable behavior.

What is appalling is that prolifers have to go to this length to PROVE what is blatantly obvious – that these are little babies being killed, not blobs of cells. And that their bodies are simply dumped like trash afterwards.
We wouldn’t THINK of dumping our dead dogs and cats in dumpsters would we MrB?
Can you imagine the circus that would spring up if a dumpster full of mutilated dogs were found?? Oy!

You misplace your rage. How sick we are, how sick Dr. Miller is, how sick, morbid, and appalling. The sick, morbid and appalling occurred inside the clinic when Jacob and the other babies were mutilated and killed by the good abortionist.

Such horrific truth must be exposed to the light of day, not covered up in an attempt to perpetuate the horror. Father Pavone’s motto is “American will not reject abortion until America see abortion”, and such photos are the only way that America will ever see it up close and personal.
These issues provide one bit of information: we can easily see who is for us and who is against us.

Citizens for a Pro-Life Society has taken out an ad that ran in the Washington Times May 9 and are running in the South Bend Tribune May 10-17. Notre Dame’s student newspaper The Observer refused at the 11th hour to…
1) There is a lot more to Catholicism than abortion. 2) Those who call for ND to abandon its catholic name, quite frankly, clearly do not understand the point of a university. 3) Did you notice how he did not make an argument for abortion? 4) As an alum of the school, I’m proud that the students had the opportunity to hear and the class to listen to the President. 5) This was the students’ day, not a day for the any one political party/ideology, and it was sloppy form to try to hijack their day. 6) The right looks bad that there was very little protest and truly negligible disruption during the speech. It shows that this was not a matter of much serious debate on campus.
I’m proud of my school today.
