Quote of the Day, July 10, 2009
My oldest brother is adopted, and I have every intention of adopting at some time. I’m very grateful for having my brother in my life. I couldn’t be more pro-adoption. There are plenty of kids in the world that need it.
~Actor Ryan Reynolds, married to actress Scarlett Johansson , as quoted by The Daily News, July 10

Good for them. Not everyone has the good sense they do. Apparently adoption is anti-human -rights according to commenter, matelot, at The Daily News:
“Wow I’m surprised. I always though Scarlett Johansson was an advocate of human rights. It’s odd to see her fall sway to adoption propaganda, and contribute to the corruption and infant trafficking in adoption. I think much less of her now.”
Adoption propaganda?
Wow, what a strange comment!
I do think that adoption has the potential to be exploitive. I think that we should try first to equip parents. However, there will always be parents who do not want to parent or those who can not parent despite increased resources.
For those reasons, it is important that adoption remain a viable and encouraged practice.
Am I the only one who noticed that photo?
which photo?
And yet the couple is highly in support of abortion.
http://www.adoptuskids.org 129,000 children in foster care are currently awaiting adoption; 20,000 leave foster care every year with no family. Most states will completely waive adoption fees if a child is adopted from foster care. I think the question is how one can be ‘pro-life’ and not have one (at least) of these children in their home (we have 3). God bless the adoptive family of 12 who were found slain in their FL home today.
Sharon:
What a great comment. I totally agree. There are many excuses for being pro-life and not adopting, none of them hold water. If you care about the life of a little one you should foster one that needs you. It would be very hard to argue against the pro-life stance if it was in fact pro-adoption.
I adopted Jill a year ago to complete our family and am thrilled with my decision.
Aren’t you being a little hard on pro-lifers?
Sharon, Why have you adopted only three children? (No excuses, please.)
Sheila, Why have you adopted only one child? (No excuses, please.)
Kids in foster care are not infants who couldn’t find homes. It has nothing to do with abortion. A woman considering abortion has 2 million couples to choose from for adoptive families.
Unfortunately, adoption is an option only for the wealthy or with a company paid adoption benefit.
I is easy for Ryan to say he is going to adopt. He can afford the $20K to >>$100K it costs.
He can also afford to pay off adoption officials that deny adoptions to any couple over 40.
A couple with well establish homes and income are not even allowed to adopt teens out of foster care.
Plus, in the US adoptive parents always have to worry about judges who take children away from adopted parents years later when the egg or sperm donor file for custody.
Maybe if adoption laws were changes to make adoption less expensive and less easily revoked by judges, more people would adopt inside the US instead of going to China, Russia and africa.
Janet:
The reason I adopted only Jill (yet) is that that I know that I can give Jill the care she deserves. When I am certain that I can manage, I will adopt more. I am just 23.
It is not just about saving a life it is caring for one. These are not just words it is hard work (fun but hard). Every able couple needs to adopted a child and then we will have no need for foster homes and abortions.
And no I am not been hard on pro-lifer. I am one myself. But preserving a life goes well beyond keeping the body alive.
Libertarian, just in India there are over 27 million orphans. 2 Million is a small number of families. We are pro-all-life I would imagine.
Mark: I agree that we should strive to make adoption easier and much more mainstream.
