I like the Lisa Benson one the best — though she has home plate facing the wrong way.
As someone who is roughly half Mexican, I find it to be either mortifying that a minority group would put their ethnic pride above the well-being of the country, or insulting that the Republican party would feel they have to pander to an ethnic group and sidestep issues so as not to ruffle feathers. I haven’t decided which is worse yet, but I shouldn’t be surprised since Obama is in office, after all. (Was that a racist comment? Oh well, I don’t care, since IT WAS RACIST OF PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR OBAMA PURELY ON THE GROUNDS THAT HE WAS BLACK IN THE FIRST PLACE. Yeah, I said it.)

It is a continual source of amazement to me that so many of you anti-choicers here are also mind readers. With your amazing psychic powers and ability to determine what other people’s motives are, you’d think that you would have this whole issue wrapped up by now.

I didn’t know that you’re Hispanic, Xalisae. I wish that I had more Mexican and Latin American herritage, but I’m proud of my family (for the most part, we’re Spanish).
We stick out a lot in New MEXICO. But our geographical location allows us to learn about lots of Hispanic culture, so I’m pleased. :)
I think that I must agree with you on this matter; ethnicity must have nothing to do with voting. It’s not right. Though, I personally don’t think that Obama was elected for his race; he won based on his politics and his campaign posed a phenomenal public relations figure: people felt as though there was hope.
Now, I like both Obama and Bush very much, though I don’t entirely agree with either of them. Unfortunately, there were people who voted for Obama due to his race, though I don’t think that the majority of people did, just as there were people who voted for Clinton just because she was a woman (cough, Gloria Steinem, cough).

Penny, you don’t have to be a mind reader when you watch the news and people at his rallies are being interviewed and give their reasons for voting for Obama as “It’s about time a black man was in the White House.” and “He’s younger than McCain.” I’m not claiming to read anyone’s mind, just have listening skills and watch the news. It’s not hard. But I don’t expect someone living in their own little dream world to comprehend.
Oh, but I can’t forget my favorite reason I heard someone cite for voting for Obama. “He’s gonna pay my rent bill, and my gas bill, and my electric bill.”
It wasn’t very hard to figure out that Obama’s being elected was by and large a result of a highly uninformed electorate.

It’s sad that you were living around an uninformed electorate – I know many people who voted for Obama and NONE of them voted just because he is black, or they thought he would pay their bills. I have no idea about the age thing.
Perhaps it was just the area where you live – the people around me were much more informed than even I was.
Kat, are you serious? You can not extrapolate your inner circle to Obama voters as a whole.
The average Obama voter was much less informed about the issues than the average McCain voter.
Race was brought up daily, and any attack on Obama’s character was played as an attack on all people of African heritage.
I have heard conservatives say things like “I couldn’t vote for Obama because of his policies, but I couldn’t vote against him because I think our country needs a black president.”
Obama didn’t actually say anything during the campaign. It was “hope this, change that, and let me steal some of Hillary’s talking points if they’re polling well.”
Obama is in office because he played the democratic primaries like a harp. It was Chicago style through and through. When he got to the general election he counted on an electorate with a heavy dose of white guilt.
I perfer to judge a man by his character than by the color of his \skin. By that measure, Obama fails miserably.
When Obama came to St.Paul, MN a t-shirt was sold that said Do Not Judge Me By My Deeds, Judge Me By The Color Of My Skin. No lie. They were selling like hotcakes.
It was national news, Kat. Although, around election time I took a trip to California for my husband’s leave, and the local news out there wasn’t any better. As a matter of fact, it was worse.
When I said “an uninformed electorate”, I meant nationally. In the big cities of California, they had Obama on t-shirts, posters, and songs on the radio. None of these depicting the man’s past deeds or works, just his visage-it was all about age and skin color.
In my beloved small town back in Arkansas, there were fliers in the local diner and grocery stores with Obama on them-and the things he had done, like voting against the BAIPA and not putting his hand over his heart for the pledge of allegiance. My backwards little red state full of uneducated hillbillies was more informed of the issues than all the big cities of California would’ve dreamed.
And that is what I saw with my own eyes, not just on the news.
Er, Carla, I think I want a shirt that reads the other way around. The shirts you described are kind of silly… all these years of everyone saying we should look beyond skin tone and look at the actual person, and now all of a sudden, let’s sell a shirt that says “hey, ignore who I am inside… the only thing that matters is my skin color!”. Huh??
I don’t understand why so many people will take “X person is not qualified for Y job” as “I don’t like X because he/she is a member of race/group Z”. I voted against Obama because I didn’t feel he would be a good president. I have no problem with any racial group in and of itself. Actually, the candidate I would have preferred to win the presidency was Alan Keyes, who happened to be black. I didn’t want Sotomayor in the Supreme Court either and it had nothing whatsoever to do with her ethnic background. I guarantee someone is going to call me “racist” or some other nasty name but hey, whatever. I know it isn’t the case, and some stranger won’t tell me how I feel inside when they don’t really know.
I opposed Hillary Clinton being in any kind of government office. Maybe that makes me sexist too… oh, wait, I’m a woman, myself… LOL ;-)

So…you can’t extrapolate what “Obama voters” were thinking from actually being one, or knowing many to whom you have spoken in depth. But, you can extrapolate what they were thinking from a couple of soundbites on CNN. Okay, got it.
Firstly, that initial comment you rebutted didn’t even belong to me, so I don’t even know why you think that putting the two comments back to back holds any sort of significance…but if my application of critical thinking skills to stories featured on CNN and NBC evening news in San Francisco isn’t good enough for you, I’m ready willing and able to share with you a situation I found summed things up best.
My husband’s mother enjoys being trendy and liberal, not necessarily in that order. He had just come home on leave, and was intending to vote for the first time in his life. Now, he is an independent, and has no party affiliation himself. Having been deployed for nearly the entire year, he had heard very little of the candidates, and knew close to nothing of their platforms and intentions for our country. Sooooo…since he knew that I was supporting McCain, and his mother was voting for Obama, he asked us both what our candidates intended to do, and what their voting records spoke in regards to their past deeds.
I was able to provide not only an example of a sound track record and stable platform with McCain, but his running-mate as well, and he was impressed.
His mother’s offering? “McCain is old. Pailin is an idiot.” (keep in mind she could not specify any particular REASON Pailin was considered an idiot, just that she was). And that was the long and short of her entire argument.
Now lather, rinse, repeat that scenario a few times, throw in some who were just voting for Obama because he was black, and a few who thought he was going to pay all their bills for them, and voilà!
America’s first black president.
All pitiful reasons for electing anyone to office.
Penny, no I can extrapolate from the polls done that showed Obama votes to be less informed than McCain voters, as well as the exist polls that showed Obama voters to be laughably ignorant of even the most basic issues surrounding the campaign.
Let’s not rewrite the history of the 2008 campaign. Obama’s positions were well articulated and fully explained. He won for three reasons, Bush Palin and Mccain.

“fine” can mean so many different things, both positive and negative….
Unemployment is unbelievably high. Some people have been out of work so long, they are not being counted anymore. It’s probably 15 -20 % in actuality. Where’s all that stimulus money gone? He and his people have no economic sense what-so-ever.
Janet, you sound like one of those compassionate Democrats. It’s not the Government’s job to find employment for people.

Did I imply that? Economic policy is set by the President’s administration. (No need to blame the current situation solely on Bush, in case that’s what you are thinking.) I’d rather not get into the whole spiel about how the Dems and Obama, personally, encouraged/forced lending to people who couldn’t afford to pay mortgages, knowing it would be unproductive/ possibly detrimental to the economy in the long run – but it happened that way.
If the Dems were smart they would cut taxes across the board and let people have more of their own money to spend, and create more jobs with.
They’d quit putting the country further into debt. Debt our children will be paying for a long, long time.
Let’s not talk about the war either. What’s done is done. We need to look to the future survival of our economy. When the economy is good, it goes without saying that the majority of people’s lives are better than when it’s not.
I’d bet even attorneys who work for small family businesses and large corporations are feeling the pinch these days.

Raising minimum wage requirements and requiring small businesses to provide healthcare to their workers isn’t helping the job situation either. It isn’t the government’s job to provide jobs for people, but it’s the government’s job not to take away the ones already being provided, at the least.

I currently live in and spent most of my young adult life in a small town in Arkansas. There are a few black families here, and we all go to school together, since the only other schools are 20-30 miles away. Never had any instances of racial tension. Never had a single problem in our community due to race. One of our community leaders is the head of one of these black households, and he’s highly respected by EVERYONE, and is one of the nicest people you could ever meet.
Oh, but I did hear about one incident that involved racial tension with family friends. They went to Memphis and had things thrown at them and were cursed at by some black people there.
Have you ever stopped to think that perhaps the attitudes of people EXPECTING to be treated poorly for the color of their skin, ACKNOWLEDGING any and all things that could possibly be even remotely construed as “racially motivated”, and most importantly letting that impact and shape the experiences of their lives for years to come…Do you think that any of that could possibly contribute to poor race relations as a whole?
I’ve had one person I associated with in college say anything negative to me concerning my race. I told him he was ignorant, and moved on. He ended up being one of my closest friends, for pete’s sake. Acknowledging the people who foolishly judge you based on the color of your skin or heritage only EMPOWER THEM to continue such nonsense. Oh, and it also empowers people who see that crap like that bothers you so that they can use that fact to manipulate you (see: democrat party).
And on that last bit…that’s the kind of crap people shouldn’t dignify with a response so as not to empower such disgusting ideas. However, if I was the kind of person to judge someone based upon issues of race…I’d say you were a disgrace to yours.

And I’m familiar with Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.
It was gender discrimination, not race. Also, it was not decided against Ledbetter based on lawfulness but due to elapsed time between the discrimination and her seeking legal restitution. Learning lessons from law isn’t just for lawyers. It’s also for citizens.
Lesson for women here: be more assertive. Stay abreast of your coworkers and their pay rates and job descriptions in relation to yours.

Where do you find any evidence that “lots o’ posters hear voted against Obama for his race? There’s no evidence of racism on this blog. There IS a strong concern for how abortion is so prevalent in the black population in this country. Are you doing anything productive to reduce abortion? Didn’t you ever consider that people voted for Obama, not so much for his policy but because they wanted to HONOR a black man by voting him into the highest office in the Land and not because of his policies? Soonerman, you mentioned once before that you are black. I forgot. Shows how much the color of your skin matters to me. It’s the person inside that matters. This isn’t the 1970’s anymore. Lol. Please read “Liberty and Tyranny – A Conservative Manifesto, by Mark R. Levin. He LOVES America and explains how we, as a country, are getting too far away from the America that our founding fathers envisioned in the writing of the Constitution.
He’s very patriotic, and proud of America.
Mark R. Levin is the most reprehensible voices on radio today, and that is saying a lot.

I agree, Levin’s delivery takes getting used to, I don’t listen very long when I do. His book is good (I’m still reading it) – unless you are a liberal who doesn’t care about what the Constitution stands for. Then don’t bother.
