Lunch Break: Northern lights and fire rainbow
To give us a break from the daily grind…
The next picture is a fire rainbow, the rarest of all naturally occurring atmospheric phenomena. The picture was captured this week on the Idaho/Washington border. The event lasted about one hour. (Clouds have to be cirrus, at least 20,000 feet in the air, with just the right amount of ice crystals….and the sun has to hit the clouds at precisely 58 degrees):

Oh my gosh, I love these!!! I’ve always wanted to see the Northern Lights in person. Is this at some special camp where people go just to see them? I wonder if it’s at a high elevation.
I’d be happy to be able to see a star-lit sky at night where I live. It’s too bright at night to see much except the brightest of stars.

I have seen the northern lights like this twice in my life – the first time as a 16 year old. I’ve never ever forgotten the experience.
