Quote of the Day 2-10-11
And what’s so great about work anyway? Work won’t visit you when you’re old.
Work won’t drive you to the radiologist’s for a mammogram and take you out afterward for soup.
~Tina Fey, weighing the decision of whether to have a 2nd child vs. pursuing more work as an actor, as quoted by Babble.com, February 9

Hmmm Is she now sounding like Sarah Palin ??
Tina’s Palin is comedy gold! I’m so glad to hear her sentiments about children. At the old folks home that I visit, you know what you don’t see on anyone’s wall? Their diploma. You also won’t see citations and certificates for their employment achievements, nor bowling trophies. What you will find: photos of family and cards from family members.
Great topic and great comments. Family is what counts. Tina – work will always be there – but children may not. Go for the kids! ;)
Well, I’m glad to see Tina Fey saying something productive instead of insulting Sarah Palin in award acceptance speeches. I did think the Mean Girls script she wrote was pretty funny.
Great quote. I was discouraged from starting a family in grad school, and got lots of comments about wasting my talent, yadda yadda.
I was on the opera track at the time, but saw so much loneliness and infidelity when I studied in Italy as a junior in a program with a few dozen opera singers. One kid was a big family to these folks- not enough for me and I knew it.
How I wish the arts world was more accommodating and accepting of women who want kids! But it’s not yet, and actually less so than it used to be.
My voice teacher, who had four children, a very respectable career, and sang with the greats of her day in big opera houses, gave me words I’ll never forget.
“I’ve known lots of singers who never had children. It can be awfully lonely when the curtain goes down.”
I love Tina Fey and I love that she acknowledges that simply saying, “Women should focus on having careers that they love instead of settling down,” is false. In reality, women and men ought to have the ability to do both- it’s true. Having a personal life, making memories, and gaining experiences are just as valuable to the psyche as having responsibility which brings about personal fulfillment. It’s not an either/or thing.
Also, I love Tina Fey for just being her! She’s so cool.
Sorry, but Tina Fey is such a LIBERAL that I can’t stand her! She’s funny, yes, but she takes such GLEE in making fun of Sarah Palin and Conservatives in general. Did no one notice the look on her face when she was standing NEXT to SP (was it on SNL?) I just remember she looked like she wanted to just drop through the floor rather than stand right next to Sarah. Like I said, as a comedienne, she’s funny..as a PERSON..not so much.
“She’s funny, yes, but she takes such GLEE in making fun of Sarah Palin and Conservatives in general.”
What do you expect? She’s a comedian. It’s her job to make fun of things, and Sarah Palin and conservatives are such a rich source of comedic fodder.
Pamela, don’t you hear the ‘Twilight Zone’ music that’s in the background whenever you see Sarah Palin?
Will most definitely not be our autonomy standing beside our deathbed weeping, nor will our autonomy grieve for us after we’re gone. It won’t be our autonomy that steps up to care for us in our old age-I wonder if proaborts ever consider how they place their future in our hands by forcing the burden of their later care onto the taxpayers because they have killed all their offspring.. At the end of the day, all we’ve got in this world is our family. By the time poorchoice figures that out, it’s too late for many of them.
Doug,
Are you given to auditory hallucinations on a regular basis? I often hear Margaret Sanger saying it was all a tragic mistake…
Maybe we can get together over a few beers and have a hallucinationfest…
Overrated, totally.
Fey, that is.
Tina Fey’s version of something Sarah Palin said is what everyone remembers – “I can see Russia from my house.” Palin never said it, but that doesn’t seem to matter. Somehow a Fey quote “proves” that Palin is an idiot. I guess that means it’s OK for us to say that Bill Clinton said, “I will build a bridge to the 21st century in my pants”, because another comedian on SNL pretending to be him said that. And I guess we can also say that Al Gore really is obsessed with Man-Bear-Pig, because that was on South Park.
I can’t say I find Fey’s Palin impersonation particularly funny. I find Frank Caliendo’s George W. Bush to be much more hilarious.
Great quote! You can read it in context in Fey’s article in the most recent New Yorker. It is funny and sweet and sad and nervous and hopeful and ambivalent.
I remember Marilyn Monroe saying something like, “A career is nice but it doesn’t hold you close at night.”
If anyone cares about what she is actually saying, you should read the article. But maybe only people like me who are wrestling with these issues care enough to bother. In that case, everyone just use the snippet to confirm your pre-existing point of view.
Hi Bridgette,
I reserve the right to comment on anything or everything or pursue more information or not comment at all…….just like you!! :)
I happen to like what she said.
I love Tina Fey. She is an excellent role model. So I don’t agree with her about abortion….I agree with everything else. She works hard, her success is based on merit and talent….she is brilliant, funny, and she shows girls that being smart is more important than being hot. She is faithful to her husband, I hear she is a joy to work with, so I cannot hate on her at all. She is WONDERFUL.
Doug, are you given to auditory hallucinations on a regular basis?
Gerard, The Voices have never told me anything about that. Perhaps I do hear things that I shouldn’t. My wife says I don’t always hear things that I should.
