Quote of the Day 2-14-11
Supporters of legislation that aims to make contraceptives more accessible in the Philippines handed out condoms Monday to raise public support for the bill.
The reproductive health (RH) bill has become controversial because of the Catholic Church’s opposition to contraception.
‘Happy Valentine’s Day! Support the RH bill. Here’s a free condom,’ the supporters said as they handed out the contraceptives to people at a public market in Manila.
~Monsters and Critics, February 14

That is unfortunate. Sigh.
It won’t work. the Phillippines have a weak central government and no Social Security. You have to have kids, if you expect to be taken care of when you are old. My best friend at the kids’ park is from the Phillippines, and she’s freaking out that she’s only got two kids in the game. Her husband- American- insists that two is expensive. When she asks about old age, he says Social Security checks.
I think about when I am old, and I think about the Baby Boom retiring, and I think, wow, maybe I had best expect to ask to live in a room in the back of my child’s house, or invest in my kids’ education and character enough that they prosper, and can build a mother in law edition on their estate.
The abortionists have guaranteed there won’t be enough kids to support Social Security.
“Happy Valentine’s Day! Support the RH bill. Here’s a free condom,’
Gee, nothing says romance like, “Gee honey, I’d better go wrap it up! I mean, I love you, but I don’t want all of you. Leave that life-generating ability in the living room.”

My grandparents, ages 91 (92 in March) and 88, are able to live at home, despite the fact that my grandfather is getting forgetful in his old age and my grandmother is in a wheelchair, because they have five kids who are willing to switch off who comes over to make dinner and who spends the night to make sure there are no emergencies. Years ago when my great-grandfather was still alive, he lived in a basement apartment at their old house.
Raising two kids isn’t so expensive that anyone with a liveable income shouldn’t be able to do it. I think that when Americans talk about how having a certain number of kids is “too expensive,” they really mean it’s too expensive to give X amount of kids a childhood complete with summer camp, trips to Florida, high-end Christmas presents, and tennis lessons, not that it’s too expensive to feed and clothe X number of kids.

I think condoms are kind of ick from an aesthetic perspective (who wants to be touching latex when they could be touching skin instead?), but I’ve never understood this argument. The fact that a couple would rather not be getting pregnant at a specific time doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re opposed to the idea of having children, or that they wouldn’t still be happy about having a baby if the condom didn’t work and they did get pregnant. Maybe they’d just prefer to put it off for a bit, but if God has other ideas that’s okay with them. Kind of like how you might not want your houseguests to show up until you’ve had a chance to clean the bathroom and vacuum the carpets, but if they get to your house six hours early you’re not going to abhor having them there or not welcome them.
As long as this is culturally sensitive, then I say good for them.
Perhaps they are doing this because of AIDs?
Jump on me if you will, but I don’t have a problem with this.
Let’s here it for the ick factor! I do agree that a mutual agreement between married couples to use these weird -looking devices is not inherently disrespectful or wrong. We did our darnedest to space kids without using hormonal contraceptives – including NFP – and still ended up with an exhausting pregnancy and parenting workout! At the end of the day you have to trust Him, chuckle, and catch a nap while you can.
Of course we all know the problem is that many unmarried couples are going to get these and think they are in the clear. BTW my friend’s babies were all “condom babies” born before she could even afford to really support herself let alone anyone else. And she was *surprised* that she still got an STD.
Oh, but they were “protected”, right? (Not against unwise behavior anyway… what are the condom advocates doing about that)?
I have a huge problem with this. Its NOT the answer….they want to control family size…I am sure PPFA is behind this.
from Wiki:
More than 90% of the population are Christians: about 80% belong to the Roman Catholic Church
See? What did I tell you. Its primarily a christian country, with the biggest Christian group being Catholics. Probably faithful Catholics, too.
And they still want Catholics to disavow the Church teaching – to live without the Church. Evil. Debase and so easy on the unsuspecting. Thank goodness all the Filipinos I know are well aware of the Teaching and will not surrender one of their greatest gifts…
Support for the bill in the Philippines is currently at only 35% and a two-thirds majority is needed. Liz, I agree that this is primarily about population control for its own sake; not for the betterment of families or society in the long term. Let’s pray that this bill does not pass.
