Lunch Break: Marilyn Monroe visits Chicago
by LauraLoo
Monstrosity or magnificent? On Friday, July 15th, Chicago’s Magnificent Mile unveiled the 26-foot sculpture of Marilyn Monroe from her iconic scene in “Seven Year Itch”.

I just read that Debbie Reynolds sold that dress from her extensive Hollywood memorabilia collection.
I kind of like the sculpture, but didn’t that scene take place in New York?
Yes, I heard about that iconic dress being sold.
As for that sculpture, it’s supposed to be in Chicago though spring 2012. Personally, I think it’s hideous.
The sculpture looks grotesque. It is no way to honor Marilyn Monroe who was a wonderfully talented actress both in drama and comedy. She was more than a sex symbol — much more. She projected an aura of vulnerability that appealed to everyone on an emotional level.
I have read that Marilyn Monroe had multiple illegal abortions. One biographer puts them at 13. Then when she desperately wanted to have a baby, she suffered miscarriage after miscarriage because of the damage done to her uterus by the illegal abortionists.
Perhaps the best way to honor this wonderful icon is to work to decrease the number of problem pregnancies — and to help those women who are prone to miscarriage to be able to carry to term.
Norma Jean was crazy! Yes she was super hot but emotionally unstable at best. She was also addicted to prescription pills and booze. Why idolize her?

(Denise) She is remembered today because she was not only “super hot” but had a wonderfully childlike quality. She was a genuinely good actress.
She overcame much adversity and accomplished a great deal. Whatever her flaws and difficulties, that makes her someone to admire.
I admire Jaycee Dugard more than I admire Marilyn Monroe.
Denise, blogs are free, so you may want to utilize that service to post yours elsewhere.
I was just pointing to some aspects of Marilyn Monroe and why people should and do admire her. In some respects, MM had an extremely deprived background. Her mother was mentally ill. When Norma Jean was growing up, she was shuffled from foster home to foster home. Yet despite these adversities, she acted — and acted well — in many movies. She was magic in front of a camera.
Perhaps readers of this website would be interested to know that, while it has not be proven, many people believe that Norma Jean had a baby that she placed for adoption.
Denise, it’s fine that you want to share some info. But if you are going to do so in blog form, it is preferable to write one’s own blog post elsewhere and then provide a link. Thanks!

(Denise) I’ll put links in the future.

(Denise) They aren’t in any competition. However, MM may, like Dugard, have been a victim of sexual abuse. It is even more likely that she was a victim of sexual exploitation. Hollywood’s notorious “casting couch” was not impeded by a campaign against sexual harassment when MM was a fledgling actress.
Despite the deprivation of her background and the many problems she faced, MM accomplished a great deal. She lit up the screen with a special magic. There is much to admire in her life.
You are going to argue my OPINION??
I have never been a fan of MM.
