Stanek weekend video: You’re more beautiful than you think
by Hans Johnson
Backdrop from Dove:
Women are their own worst beauty critics. Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful. At Dove, we are committed to creating a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety. So, we decided to conduct a compelling social experiment that explores how women view their own beauty in contrast to what others see.

I have a nice personality so I find myself to be beautiful. I don’t wish to look like someone else and most of the time I like myself but I have seen so many women pick themselves apart when actually I find them beautiful. I think a crappy attitude can make men and women alike very ugly.
I also think its about insecurity. I could wish to be younger but that’s not possible so I announce with pride I’m 43 and liking it. It wasn’t always this way cuz when I was younger I had breast implants and a nose job. You aren’t going to be everyones type and that’s okay. I even have liberal friends who like that I speak my mind. So beautiful is definitely an inside job and when I meet someone with a nice personality I usually find them beautiful
Hi Heather,
I think beauty is ultimately in the eye of the beholder. Have you ever seen Star Parker? I think she is positively striking. She is in a video with black leaders supporting the NRA and is a prominent black conservative. Also, Sophia Loren, who while she does not have beautiful features, is beautiful. She just exudes sensuality. Have you also noticed that many of the great beauties do not age well, while some women become more beautiful as they age.
My fixation is with eyes. They are the first thing to jump out at me and a beautiful pair of eyes will transfix me.
Years ago I read an article called “Sex power, women have it”. No it wasn’t about bedroom antics. The author stated that every woman has something, her hair, eyes, voice, figure, ability to listen, etc. that can make them extremely attractive to men, and good looks have nothing to do with it. She pointed out great models who lack it. She points out that the powerful mistresses and consorts of great men were not beautiful women, but knew how to use their “wiles”. Anne Boleyn was thought to have “bewitched” Henry VIII because she was so plain and he was so infatuated. Cleopatra was no beauty.
I must admit though Heather, sex power or not, I have been at an absolute loss to understand as to who some men will leave their wives and girlfriends for. Like, are you serious?
I think everyone is attractive in some way. And I don’t get how some people go out of their way to insult someone that they personally don’t find attractive. That’s just rude. If you don’t find someone attractive simply don’t date them, don’t go out of your way to hurt their feelings.
I feel bad for women, I don’t think men get judged on their looks to the same extent that women do at all. But on the other hand, women don’t get judged on their physical abilities like men do, so I guess it evens out. I just wish people could be appreciated for their own unique traits and not judged against some ideal.
Mary very well put. Jack I agree. I hate that when they say things like Brad Pitt and George Clooney are the most beautiful men on the planet. Not to me. Not at all. Many women agree with me too. My gay male friend even said he finds Pitt unattractive. I have my own opinions of beautiful people. Id rather date Marylin Manson than Pitt…eh call me crazy. There is just something that I’m intrigued by with him.
Mary Starr Parker and Vanessa Williams have beautiful eyes. I’m not bragging but I have blue green cat eyes like they do. Mary you would love my eyes ….lol
Hi Jack,
I have found that no one is more vicious to women than other women. Also, men are so surprised when I tell them women can meet for the first time, ….and know exactly what the other is thinking. I just laugh how women who consider themselves so liberated fawn over the new male employees. Sorry, but nothing will ever change human biology.
Hi Heather,
Did you ever see the “Afghan Girl”, a famous photo on National Geographic. You could google it. Now those are eyes I will get transfixed on. Same with the late Elizabeth Taylor’s. BTW, my eyes are also blue-green, I think aquamarine. Blue is rare and green is rarer. Very small percentage of the world’s population.
Strangely, my brother recalled his encounter with a prominent mobster decades ago. He said the man had the most black soulless eyes he had ever seen. Strange he would mention it out of the blue. Interestingly I have heard many police officers describe the eyes of criminals they confront the same way. One police officer described the eyes of a sociopathic killer as “reptilian” and he can spot them the minute he confronts them.
Eyes may indeed be the windows to the soul.
With Starr Parker it isn’t so much her eyes, its just her overall appearance I find so striking. Maybe face structure? Can’t really put a finger on it. Same with Sophia Loren.
Mary women treat one another so terribly bad sometimes it’s unreal. I tend to form better relationships with men. You don’t know how many jobs I’ve wanted to just walk out of because of a woman being nasty to me. Usually when I can’t take anymore I let them have it and they back off. OR they will make it their life mission to make your life hell. I wish I knew why this was. I have a handful of friends who are women. I have a lot of women I know but I not consider them friends.
Just like many men fawn over Pam Anderson and Jennifer Aniston. As a woman I am not really impressed by either one. But hey to each their own.
Hi Mary interesting point about women but I must say I honestly don’t know what another woman is thinking of me upon a first meeting. Usually down the rd. Is there a way you can tell? I know there have been times I have been completely wrong about what another woman was thinking of me. Some women I wasn’t wild about when Id met them ended up becoming some of the best women I knew. Enquiring minds wanna know. Also if a woman is really rude or gives a limp handshake I know that we probably aren’t going to get along.
Hi Heather,
I don’t know how to explain it. I don’t mean mind reading but just certain reactions and comments that I pick up on, and I’m sure they pick up on mine.
Hi Heather,
On this subject I have to tell you something hilarious. During the funeral of President Gerald Ford my mother commented on how Betty Ford had let her figure go! I said mom, the woman is 90y/o, she isn’t going to look like Pamela Anderson. My mother replied, “well, I’m almost 90 and I certainly haven’t let my figure go like that”. I guess some things never change!
Mary lol
Hi Heather,
Glad you enjoyed. My mother was so serious too. You have to admire that kind of spirit.
The people at work got a huge laugh out of it as well.
Jill, great shout out to women. Thank you, and, hey, by the way, you are beautiful… more than you think. :-)
Sometimes beauty shifts like sand on a windy day. Barbra Streisand can go from beautiful to downright plain. Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor is the same way.
It must have something to do with what’s going on underneath that “skin deep” layer.
The company that owns Dove, Unilever, also owns Axe. They praise women in Dove ads and then treat them like sex crazed sex objects for men’s use in the Axe ads. As a woman I don’t think we should be cooing over the Dove ads. Unilever needs to be called out on the double standard.
