Pro-life video of the day: Archbishop bans 40 Days For Life
by Hans Johnson
Firebrand Michael Voris is never shy to hold his fellow Catholics’ feet to the fire. Even those of Archbishop Philip Wilson of Adelaide, Australia who, in declaring the Church should speak with “one voice” has said that his archdiocese is not to “publicize or encourage” 40 Days For Life prayer vigils.

Hello Catholic prolifers. I got an email from Priest for Life where Father Pavone was trying to explain away Pope Francis recent remarks. Our local paper lauded the Pope for his open-mindedness. Now I see this article. What is going on? Am I wrong that I sense a big battle brewing in the Catholic Church on foundational principles of life, marriage and family which is commanded by God in Genesis where he tells Adam to “cleave to his wife becoming one flesh and to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth”, is affirmed by Jesus when described marriage and discouraged divorce in Matthew and by Paul in his Epistles to the church especially Romans but other letters as well. Is this “opening up discussion” meant to make the church more PC and palatable?
On the plus side, we’ve got a high up Vatican official declaring that Nancy Not-A-Real-Catholic-Anyway Pelosi should be denied communion, so makes me optimistic. Catholics have really warmed up to 40 Days, and the fact that it was founded by non-Catholics who have been so wonderfully inclusive and welcoming also makes me optimistic.
I see by the link that the letter was signed by Philip Marshall, not Wilson. It looks like he or they are afraid of criticism coming to the church for being associated with 40 days but the rationale is incredibly vague. I think the Church needs to get with the program ASAP and find a way to reach out to post-abortive Catholic women.
I think that fear of offending lapsed Catholics is at the heart of what seems to be cowardice. It’s part of how we ended up with so many post abortive Catholic women. We need our members to be properly educated, catechized. Promoting Theology of the Body is a great step because it EXPLAINS WHY we respect life.
But another great step is to keep encouraging Catholics to embrace and participate in 40 Days. We Christian pro-lifers are all on the same team, no matter which church we attend on Sundays. I love 40 Days and they ARE getting positive results and saving LIVES.
Prolifer L,
I haven’t read what Fr. Frank Pavone has said, but Pope Francis is NOT changing ANY of the Church teachings. Here is a link to a blog that explains things, with a link to the actual statements the Pope made: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/markshea/2013/09/francis-interview-and-the-unexpected-unity-of-the-ny-times-and-the-francis-haters.html
Some things Michael Voris says in his videos are okay, but other times it sounds like he’s saying it has to be done HIS way and I didn’t notice he really explained WHY the Archbishop would say what he said. I think further investigation into this would be important to see if it’s truly what Voris is saying or if there’s something else going on we don’t know.
As far as I know, it’s not forbidden for a Catholic to work with 40 Days For Life.
I am reading that this could be because Wilson thinks that 40 days for Life may alienate “some” members since his curia is an an ultra-liberal hub. Is that true?
“Archbishop bans 40 Days For Life” – really? He’s banned it? Has he? Can he?
Looks more like a case of discouraging participation. Is that the fact of the matter?
Prolifer L, please pay NO attention to anything the media says about Pope Francis. They are just as bent on twisting his words as they were Pope Benedict’s, only in a different way. I wrote about the whole thing here:

Thanks Mother in Texas and Lori Pieper for your post and the links I think I understand it better now. I usually discount anything that the MSM says about most things especially religious and church matters. The Catholic Church has been on the frontlines standing for godly principles, life and marriage and for that I am grateful. God bless you
Thanks, Prolifer L! I was just looking for the Pope’s talk to doctors about abortion at the Vatican web site and was appalled to learn that almost a week after it was given, it still has no English translation! So while people will get the complete English of the interview if they want, in all languages, English-speaking people won’t be able to see his clear words about abortion . . .
The talk is quite beautiful; I’m going to try and make my own translation and post it on my blog. I’ll put a link here if possible.
9ek, I read the statement by the Vicar General, Fr. Marshall, and the gist of it was that they feel that 40 Days for Life is not sensitive enough to the feelings of women who have suffered the loss of their unborn children, presumably through abortion (possibly a great many parishioners across the diocese).
This does not resemble anything I’ve ever heard of 40 Days. On the other hand, maybe there really is a problem with some of the organization’s members down Under, who knows? But there’s an equal likelihood that the bishop just doesn’t want to offend post-abortive Catholics. If so, this is certainly a cowardly attitude.
On the other hand, the only concrete thing the statement discouraged was putting info from 40 Days for Life in church bulletins. It did not say that Catholics couldn’t participate at all in campaigns.
Mr. Voris implies something quite different in the video. He seems to think Catholics are forbidden in any way to take part in the 40 Days campaigns. Nowhere does the statement say that. You might notice how he also cleverly edits the statement, dropping all reference to the possible real cause of concern, and then making it seem as if the bishop’s attitude was completely baseless.
Typical Voris, I’m afraid. And what’s all this shock and dismay over the fact that the diocesan website mentions concern for climate change? What on earth does this have to do with the subject of abortion? Well, climate change is a personal bugaboo of Mr. Voris. Any Catholic who so much as mentions concern for the environment is to him, obviously, not a “real Catholic” but a liberal out to destroy the Church. And all of this is reason to call this bishop “faithless”?
Not impressed with Mr. Voris here.
Here’s the link I was talking about.
