I absolutely agree. Children are curious. I know my mom acted embarrassed to tell me about sex or even menstruation (and she is an RN) so I found out anyhow…from my friends some of whom were having sex at age 13.
With my son I told him the truth when he asked questions. I didn’t make up cutesie stories but straight out told him how his baby brother was growing in my stomach and when he asked how the baby got in there I told him. I read him “The Story of me” and “Before You WEre Born” which are 2 great books that talk about sex without shaming and without titillating. The books discuss how sex is a wonderful gift God has given married people. I talked with my son about sex is not shameful or dirty but when you misuse it it is and can be very hurtful and dangerous.
My son knows he can come to his father and I and ask questions about his body or about sex and we won’t shush him or talk down to him. Kids are learning this information every day, whether from other friends on the playground or even the pornographic ads that flash across the TV when watching innocent programs like the Duggar’s! Sex is all around us and our kids are getting messages. We need to plant the right message first and then nurture it.
