Pro-life vid of the day: Bette Davis’ back-street abortion scene
by LauraLoo
If she were living today, October 6th would have been the 105th birthday of actress Bette Davis (1908-1989).
Today we feature a scene from The Nanny in which Bette’s character learns of her daughter Janet’s illegal abortion that resulted in her death. In this riveting scene, she is reprimanded by her daughter’s doctor for being there for her 25 years too late, looking instead after other people’s children.

One has to wonder how painful this movie was for Bette, having gone through three abortions herself.
In 1985, Bette’s daughter Barbara published an account of her childhood, portraying her mother as “a ghastly, neurotic, foul-mouthed, pugnacious boozer.” Bette never forgave her.

If you ever get a chance, check out a movie called “Love with a Perfect Stranger,” starring Natalie Wood and Steve Mcqueen. Its about a young woman who works at Macy’s and has a one night stand with McQueen (a musician) which results in a pregnancy. She is going to have an illegal abortion and . . .
Well, you have to see the movie, I am not going to spoil it for you!
I’ll check it out phillymiss. My family and I just watched Duel last week that was recommended by Jack. So if you see this Jack, thanks for a great family movie night!
I’ve read countless tales of these old time actresses aborting followed by self destructive behaviors ….Judy Garland M Monroe Rita Hayworth Shelly Winters….of course PAS wasn’t recognized back in these days ( more actresses than not had abortions) Its no wonder her daughter described her as she did.
What about Jane Russell? Her illegal near-death abortion experience led her to be staunchly pro-life and promote adoption.
Phillymiss, I have seen it and it’s really good. The actual title, as I remember it, is “Love with the Proper Stranger.” Gave me a whole new appreciation of Steve McQueen!
Bette Davis was born in April. She passed way October 6th 1989. One thing is certain, though; I am no fan of the actress. If this article means anything, she was a less than model mother, and her daughter seemed to be wise to her mother’s ways.

From what I understand, Judy Garland was pressured to abort a pregnancy she really wanted, and we know what kind of self-destructive behaviors she engaged in.
Thank you for the correction Lori. Don’t you love the last scene? I am not going to give anything away but it’s a happy ending. Natalie Wood was sooo beautiful, she is my favorite actress of all time.
Hi phylimiss…i would love to check out that movie! Btw cause of death for Bette Davis…breast cancer.
