Traditionally, members of the winning Super Bowl  team visit the White House shortly before receiving their championship rings. Several former teammates of the Baltimore Ravens passed on the June 5th event to attend mini-camp for their new teams. But Matt Birk, who had just retired, chose not to meet President Obama for another reason. Already known for his opposition to “gay marriage”, he is also strongly pro-life.

As he told KFAN radio the next morning:

“I wasn’t there. I would say this. I would say that I have great respect for the office of the presidency, but about five or six weeks ago our president made a comment in a speech. And he said: ‘God bless Planned Parenthood.’

Planned Parenthood performs about 330,000 abortions a year. I am active in the pro-life movement and I just felt like I couldn’t deal with that. I couldn’t endorse that in any way.”

The following day Birk also spoke by phone to the Pro Football Talk Live show. The conversation turns to the controversy over his firm convictions at about the 6:00 mark:
