Pro-life vid of day: MSNBC meets “rebels of anti-abortion movement”
Last week MSNBC reporter Irin Carmon paid a visit on behalf of the Melissa Harris-Perry show to “the rebels of the anti-abortion movement,” Abolish Human Abortion, members of which were protesting outside a high school in Norman, Oklahoma.
Carmon reported in a written piece:
AHA activists disdain the phrase “pro-life” altogether. They prefer “abolitionists,” with all slavery comparisons explicitly intended, and they want to push the larger movement to abide by their uncompromising positions. That means moving away from the incremental strategy – 20 week bans, admitting privileges laws for clinics – and sticking to banning all abortion without exceptions, equating hormonal birth control (even the daily pill kind) with abortion, and advocating that women who have abortions be tried as murderers. That sort of unblinking absolutism in the face of the messiness of real life decision-making may be what has drawn nearly 34,000 people to like their Facebook page.
In February, Abolish Human Abortion decided it wasn’t enough to confront people outside abortion clinics. They have been taking their struggle to what they called “the front lines” – high schools, with arresting, graphic novel-style materials to go with them. Across the country, at dozens of high schools, self-styled abolitionists are stopping teenagers in front of their schools….
They don’t care who they offend. They aren’t interested in a political or legal strategy; they reserve their deepest scorn for the incrementalists who have crafted a step-by-step plan to overturn Roe v. Wade. As far as AHA is concerned, those guys are sellouts. But in the end, there isn’t so much that the mainstream movement and Abolish Human Abortion disagree on besides tactics.

The pro-‘borts are scared, and they aren’t going to go down without a fight.
Expect them to make up and report data that supports their view. They believe that killing is a suitable solution to most problems, so a little lying isn’t going to trouble their consciences. The rate of abortion is way too high, but it has never been as high as one-in-three. Isn’t the statistic that one-in-four children are killed by abortion? And the average American woman has 1.6 children or more? That math does not balance out, and 1-in-3 is just way too high.
Abortion numbers are down, in spite of growing population and a flat rate of unwed pregnancies. Abortion clinics are closing, and so far no one misses any of them. Planned Parenthood is become the abortion monopoly, and eventually they will be defunded of public subsidies.
Oh they will fight Del.
Fight and lose.
Confronting the wackiest anti-abortion group, asking a gotcha question, and using the response to make even rational pro-lifers look like extremists. What took the media so long to think of doing this?
Jill, wait until you see the footage of their visit that we are going to release in response to their coverage.
Navi, You can join MSNBC in trying to make us look “wacky” and work against Abolitionists, but the reason they covered us is only partially what you suggest. The other reason is that they were aware that abolitionists engaged (not protested) high school students all across the country on this day and are continuing to go to the high schools on a regular basis.
You can call us whacky and be selective in what you say and admit about abolitionists, but we aren’t making “rational pro lifers look like extremists”… we go out of our way to inform those who interview us that we are not a part of the Pro Life Movement at all.
So don’t worry. You will not be mixed up with us in the general history of what all went down in the abolitionist movement in America. Comments like yours above will be used to show that pro-lifers did not see AHAers/Abolitionists/whatever as representative of who they were.
Yeah…It’s totally the people who are against baby killing that should be worried about “looking like extremists” to the people who are in favor of it…
I love mobs like this. The more they speak, the more exposure they get, the more people get turned off and realise how much their rights are under threat. The WBC of the anti-choice movement.
No contraception?
No exceptions for rape or health?
Extremists are the best advertisement against any particular movement.
AHA isn’t part of the pro-life movement, they even state very clearly that they are not pro-life. Can’t really judge the whole movement on people who specifically don’t belong to it.
If they’re not ‘pro-life’ then what are they, the ultimate anti-choicers? They won’t be seen as some sort of ‘third way’ by most people, just anti-choice.
They hold signs. ‘Normal’ anti-choicers hold signs.
They rail against abortion. All anti-choicers rail against abortion.
They’re anti-contraception. So are some ‘normal’ anti-choicers.
They won’t consider exceptions for rape or health. Neither will some ‘normal’ anti-choicers.
Too many similarities LDPL. Once things go far enough that people start saying to themselves “hang on a minute, this will impact on me“, the push-back will be on.
Jill, perhaps a disclaimer that this is merely the way MSNBC has chosen to spin their story, and not the way it actually is. They will misrepresent AHA at every chance they get, and this op-ed is no different
In some other discussion I pointed out that “pro life” activists almost always are men. After seeing this I reverse that statement and only express my surprise that “pro life” women like those in the video have beards. Or do they have to dress up like men when they leave the kitchen/bedroom – the places for a “pro life” woman, or shall we call her a heifer, is to be supposed to be spending her time?
And no exception even for health reasons? I love those guys! More of those and America might wake up and see what is coming. “Pro life” is a stain on humanity, an insult to both women – and men.
Fear the BEARD! there is nothing wrong with being “WACKY”, just don’t be a dick or tell lies about people, live and learn and listen. God is talking and he uses alot of different kinds of telephones to get his messages across so be ready for a “wacky” miracle or otherwise .. Jesus is a little wacky the important thing is to speak the truth, which is no one is perfect except Christ.
Okay CityOfAngels I seriously laughed out loud at that one. Is anyone scared of five o’clock shadow? Because if they are I’m terrifying right now.
Christine please appreciate the irony that you are commenting on a female pro-life activist’s blog, which is moderated by mostly women, and that has at least fifty percent if not more female commenters. Or you could look at like any poll and see women are split pretty evenly into pro-life and pro-choice camps, and in some places like the UK more women are pro-life than men are. But that would require you to stop stereotyping for five seconds and that doesn’t work for you I think?
OMG-I just snorted!
Ok, STILL laughing: http://www.fear-the-beards.com
HAHAHA I am honestly dying here. Can’t stop laughing.
Reality AHA is obviously anti-abortion, but that’s as far as the similarity goes. Do you consider Mormons and Catholics the same thing? They share the same very basic beliefs in some ways, but they are radically different.
I just thought of the AHA’s past intolerance towards Catholicism… yikes, I can see where the liberal media elite could be going with this.. Now I really am fearing the beard!! Oh, maybe God will handle it, they are saving babies here and there, and I know that means alot to God. Deluded Lib Pro-Lifer glad we made each other smile & have a nice night!
More coverage and a much better video from MSNBC.

Don’t fear the beard. Fear God. And listen to what the guy with the beard is saying.
Listen to God-take note of what the guy with the beard is saying-and use scripture to discern the truth of what is God’s will in it.
Ah, I see. Carry on then. I probably won’t respond to you if that’s what you’re doing, I don’t have an interest in being your punching bag, I prefer to dialogue with people who are willing to at least debate politely. Have a good weekend!
Is not telling women “you must give birth once you are pregnant” about power? Women has up to 20th century been held prisoners by our biggest blessing – which is also our biggest curse. Contraception and, as a last way out, abortion, has been part of our advance towards equality with men. And those beards hate that, just like churches hate it (search for Sceptics Annotated Bible, gives around 400 quotes on christianitys hate and contempt for women) and they managed to brainwash their women into submission.
And yes I am rude in my words to “pro lifers”, but they are rude in action and how they see me – as a cow to be kept pregnant and preferrably gagged. So I am at war with them. But they started it.
Enjoy your weekend too
Your hyperbole will never help you get your point across.
Because it’s not about power. I’ve explained to you before, it’s about protecting a human being from death. Being anti-infanticide isn’t about power either. And honestly, I don’t believe women are so weak and infantile that they can’t have awesome lives even if they have an unplanned pregnancy. I don’t believe women are that weak, in 2014 there are a million options that don’t involve killing off the kid.
Dustin Germain, 3/14 7:15p: It goes without saying on this blog that any quotes from MSM are to be taken as biased, and particularly if it’s MSNBC.
Deluded Lib Pro-Lifer, 3/15 1:59a: lol!
Christine and the steam buildup: you could always go for a run.
Still waiting for the pics of the real abortions, btw.
Christine,
I am still waiting for you to tell me if you object to men supporting abortion and performing abortions.
Bahhahaha laughing so hard about the beards ohhhhh my gracious.
Hey I like beards! (short ones).
Oh wait that means I’m just a slave to misogyny doesn’t it? ;)
Please, people – keep Christine commenting – she is on a roll!
“You must give birth once you are pregnant” is about human rights, not about power. That is quite a claim. I would like to know who is supposedly controlling the world by making a pregnant woman carry her baby to term.
Are there any tyrants in history who conquered a people by making a pregnant woman carry her baby to term? Genghis Khan? Hitler?
Wonders who would be thinking that Christine should be made pregnant…. Who is wanting more sources of that scintillating output?
Just a reminder.
Christine, There is no swearing allowed here.
Either you try your best to clean up your language or I will try to help you by deleting your comments.
And to others? Mods would appreciate an email to delete any comments with swearing instead of cutting and pasting an offensive comment!!
Carry on.
Reality AHA is obviously anti-abortion, but that’s as far as the similarity goes. – that’s the only similarity that matters. You either support womens rights and choices or you don’t.
Do you consider Mormons and Catholics the same thing? – yep, to an atheist they are both believers in a god, we are not.
yep, to an atheist they are both believers in a god, we are not.
Oh please. I’m a Christian but I can see the difference in philosophies such as agnosticism and atheism and pantheism. It’s not too hard to realize that even religions under a similar grouping have differences.
Pfft.
And as to your comment about womens rights and choices… we’ve been over this. Abortion is not the only choice that is important to women and also it’s a bad choice – it’s a choice to murder. So yes, I’m against a woman’s right to murder her baby. If that’s the wrong side, I’ll gladly plant my stake there because I do believe that murder is wrong.
Other actual choices that women make? I’m all for it. Wanna work outside the home? Great! Want to be a stay at home mom? Awesome! Don’t want to get married and have kids? More power to you.
See? I am pro-women’s rights and choices. shocking, right?
Oh please. I’m a Christian but I can see the difference in philosophies such as agnosticism and atheism and pantheism. – good for you. So can I. But as I said, to an atheist, mormons and catholics are both believers in a god, we are not.
It’s not too hard to realize that even religions under a similar grouping have differences.
Pfft. – pfft indeed, so what. They are all theistic.
we’ve been over this. – we have.
Abortion is not the only choice that is important to women – indeed not.
and also it’s a bad choice – for you maybe, not for others. If you think its a bad choice, you don’t have to do it. Just leave others alone.
it’s a choice to murder. – we’ve been over this, it’s not murder.
So yes, I’m against a woman’s right to murder her baby. – abortion isn’t ‘murdering a baby’. That’s infanticide. Why does the word fetus exist?
If that’s the wrong side, I’ll gladly plant my stake there – that’s your choice, don’t expect let alone demand, that others follow your choice.
because I do believe that murder is wrong. – so do I. Abortion isn’t murder.
Other actual choices that women make? I’m all for it. Wanna work outside the home? Great! Want to be a stay at home mom? Awesome! Don’t want to get married and have kids? More power to you. – cool, me too LibertyBelle.
See? I am pro-women’s rights and choices. shocking, right? – to a limited extent. Not as much as I am. You still wish to limit womens rights and choices, therefore you are anti-choice. I’m actually pro-life as well as pro-choice, in a broader, more realistic way :-)
