Planned Parenthood Aurora: financed under false pretenses
In May 2007 Planned Parenthood Chicago Area requested and received a bond rating as a nonprofit organization (“501(c)3”) from the IL Finance Authority that allowed it to borrow at a cheaper rate to build its Aurora abortion mill (click to enlarge):

In an excellent article today, WorldNetDaily is raising that issue as well as recapping multiple zoning and ordinance violations by PP as well as city official apparent cover-ups….
… Peter Breen [pictured below with fellow TMS attorneys Rich Baker and Tom Brejcha], a lawyer working with the team assembled by the Thomas More Society to handle the case, said there are several issues the city will need to address at a hearing scheduled for Monday, including the fact that the land’s zoning requires a for-profit corporation, while Planned Parenthood itself is non-profit, and through that status, obtained more than $8 million in state bonds to build the project….
Part of the cover-up by Planned Parenthood was its application for building permission for the ostensibly “for-profit” GOD [Gemini Office Development] project. But Breen told WND the zoning for the location is “B-B,” which is “Business Boulevard,” and does not allow non-profit health-related facilities under any circumstances.
Planned Parenthood of the Chicago area is incorporated as a non-profit, and in that status used more than $8 million in state bond funding mechanisms for the facility, officials said.
“By pretending to be building a taxpaying, for-profit medical facility, GOD and Planned Parenthood evaded zoning laws that Aurora purports to enforce against its citizens, fairly and even-handedly,” the center said.
Also, WND lists specific zoning violations that would be impossible for PP to fix without destroying the building and purchasing extra property for parking:
The project also fails to comply with the 35-foot setback requirements and parking-related minimums under its city zoning. The zoning calculations require 95 oversized parking spaces for a building of that size, and there exists space for only 71, Breen said.

Jill, I think you mean 2007, no biggie…
Well, this should all come together tonight. Either one of two situations can arise.
1) The ZBA chooses to honor the motion to dismiss. In this case, the pro-life attorneys will file suit in state court immediately
Well…Steve Trombley did say Planned Parenthood will “stop at nothing” to open their Abortion Fortress.
I guess that means any and all means, legal or not.
Jasper… whoops… thanks! I usually err the other way… keep writing the previous year long after the new year has begun.
RSD – The PP Attorney has been nearly silent in all of the ZBA procedings. Perhaps we can assume by this that the city and PP are togather in this one — and perhaps from the start.
Hopefully the pro-lifers will get the subponeas they need.
Charles,
I wholeheartedly agree on your assumption that the mayor (+ his cronies) and PP had a deal from the start.
This whole thing has been stinking of bribes and corruption from the start.
The Truth will come out!
The demolition of the house of horrors will be the greatest party I’ll ever attend!
AB Laura,
When this outpost of hell is demolished, I will be there and would even volunteer to knock down a few walls myself…heck, I’d pay to drive the bulldozer even for a few minutes!
RSD,
LOL!!! I’m taking TONS of pictures! They will be framed, matted & put in my LIVING room!!!
Laura, RSD and Charles
We can gather on my deck for the demolition — I hope to plan my menu soon for the celebration. :)
I doubt it will be demo’d. Perhaps just sold. I would like to see this fortress turned into a Police Station — to help with the community, but I am sure that puts me in the minority. Oh well.
I don’t think it can be sold because the building doesn’t meet zoning requirements and the owner knowingly violated them. They can’t profit from violating the law.
Before the whole bruhaha, I was hoping we would get a nice restaurant or some good shops there. Something that makes the area more attractive.
I know…lets auction off the rubble and send the proceeds to the nearest CPC!!
Anon was me
Hooves —
I’ll drink to that!
Charles,
With the 35ft. setback issue, it just might be demo’d! I just don’t see how they can get around that one!
LB,
I’ll be there! Let me know what to bring (besides my praise to God, of course!)
It won’t be demolished, sold or closed. It’s already a valuable asset to the community:
For months, City Council meetings were packed to the rafters with Aurorans speaking their minds about Planned Parenthood. There have been protests and rallies outside the clinic, and hundreds of people walking past those protests to take advantage of the services provided there.
At the center of the fire storm was Steve Trombley, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood/Chicago Area. Trombley has taken a lot of heat in the past few months for bringing the new building through the city’s approval process under a subsidiary name, Gemini Office Development. And he was the company’s point person in Aurora, deflecting criticism and answering loaded questions.
“I have the best job in the world,” Trombley said. And it’s clear he relishes the chance to stand up for what he believes in.
His family background has served him in good stead over his 19 years with Planned Parenthood. He’s spent the last 10 as president and CEO, and he believes what his company offers is a safe, confidential environment for people to make often difficult decisions about their lives.
At the Aurora facility, he said, the number of clients seeking abortions is about what was expected. But the number of people seeking family planning and counseling is off the charts — more than 50 percent higher than anticipated.
Now 41 and the father of three, Trombley said being a parent has changed the way he looks at his job. When he started, it was all about standing up for rights he believes in. Now he sees it as a more personal thing.
He defended his decision to bring the facility into Aurora under a different name and said he would do it again to protect the building contractors from harassment.
Despite the furor, Trombley downplays the resistance to Planned Parenthood in Aurora. He gives credit to the Pro-Life Action League for mobilizing a public opposition, but said he’s seen just as many volunteers and supporters come through the doors of 3051 E. New York St. And he strongly believes the services offered are sorely needed in this area. He describes the reality of accessible reproductive health care as a grim environment, and as proof he cites a story from the first day the new facility was open: A woman traveled by bus from North Dakota with her husband and young son because Aurora’s facility was the closest place she could get an abortion.
Trombley knows some will never accept the clinic here. But he sees its future as a bright one. “I think we empower people to make good decisions for themselves,” he said.

If a woman in ND is pregnant and wants an abortion there are closer mills than Aurora!!! Not buying it.
If a woman in ND is pregnant and wants an abortion there are closer mills than Aurora!!!
Perhaps they didn’t have any appointments available.
LB:
The zoning requirements which PP violated are specific to the use
Carla:
If ND has parental notification/consent laws, young teens would certainly drive the distance than tell obtain the required permission to proceed with an abortion. Perhaps you hadn
Charles:
The article says it was a “woman with her husband and young son,” not a girl.
Charles:
First of all, whether or not it
Reality —
So you think that the opinions of Steve Trombley about his own greatness trumps local laws.
You must work for the Beacon…
reality aka steve trombley. Hi Steve!
lol, wow! LB thinks I work for the Beacon (I’m assuming that’s a newspaper?) and Carrie thinks I’m Steve Trombley, himself! I’m soooo flattered, you guys! Seriously, I’m blushing!
You would blush and be flattered to be confused with a man whose income comes from murdering children? Sad.
The Beacon is indeed a local paper, a poorly written one that is regularly scooped by blogs and other good area papers. Don’t be flattered.
Ha Ha. That shows how we view things differently. You consider it a compliment,me not so much cough*reality*cough.
Oh come on guys…don’t be so hard on reality.
Reality: this is the high point of your life, I’m sure. Enjoy it.
It’s all downhill from here.
reality:
A health clinic is not a nuclear reactor. A Planned Parenthood clinic poses no hazard to the community.
A nuclear reactor presents no hazard to the community
LB:
You would blush and be flattered to be confused with a man whose income comes from murdering children? Sad.
Why shouldn’t I be flattered to be mistaken for a man who managed to sneak a huge Planned Parenthood clinic in to the PLAL’s home town without them catching on until it was far too late to do anything about it? Brilliant!
Why shouldn’t I be flattered to be mistaken for a man who managed to sneak a huge Planned Parenthood clinic in to the PLAL’s home town without them catching on until it was far too late to do anything about it?
But I thought they did nothing wrong??? What’s all this business suddenly about “sneaking”?
Charles:
You cannot have a variance on these items.
We’ll see. Perhaps the city will concede that any zoning issues were their own fault, and that PP shouldn’t be penalized for the city’s mistakes, especially considering the vital service PP provides the community.
But I thought they did nothing wrong??? What’s all this business suddenly about “sneaking”?
Nothing wrong with sneaking to protect your builders from unwarranted harassment (see the post about Denver), providing you don’t break any laws, which PP didn’t. ;)
Careful reality…
I don’t think you’ll know what to do with your tail once you catch it.
Reality–Steve Trombley is up to his same old tricks in the article you posted. Just as he use to say that there were no abortion facilities closer than 40 miles (until it was pointed out that there were four other facilities that were indeed closer than that) here we are once again with another fiction.
In all reality, Reality, how does one account for a) someone from N. Dakota would bypass all of the abortion mills in the Twin Cities and Madison WI and Rockford IL on the way down to Aurora, and b) on the first day that PP was open they were not doing abortions that day.
Another fiction was that Mr. Trombley had seen “just as many volunteers and supporters come through the doors” as were present at the pro-life rallies. Aside from being outnumbered, for example on one day 1300 pro-lifers to 8 abortion rights protesters, his account amazingly contradicts the president of NOW Illinois chapter’s lament (posted alongside of his article which you quoted) that few people were getting involved from their side.
The facts are really clear in this situation and CEO Steve Trombley has crowed about how clever PP was in deliberately circumnavigating the normal processes in order to avoid pro-life scrutiny. Federal Judge Charles Norgle called the deceptions an “obfuscation”. Where I come from deceptions and obfuscations constitute fraud. Once this is all exposed under oath in a court of law the truth will come out.
Aurora’s outside review of Planned Parenthood’s permit process — all three parts of it — shows the clinic did nothing illegal.

Reality —
You should really get some more up to date information, perhaps go to the meeting tonight. The fact that the City Attorney is refusing a Subpeona for documents and the fact that no plans for the facility were ever submitted should give you a pretty clear indication that PP will be on the losing side eventually.
PP’s deed for the land listed the zoning as BB — so Aurora officials may have helped them evade the law, but by no means did their errors cause PP to violate it. I’m sure even Mr Trombley knows he should read his deed.
So would be proud to be a sneak — bravo to you! Obviously you can’t stand up for you views in public, that is really the definition of a coward. Then again only a coward would murder a baby.
“lol, wow! LB thinks I work for the Beacon (I’m assuming that’s a newspaper?) and Carrie thinks I’m Steve Trombley, himself! I’m soooo flattered, you guys! Seriously, I’m blushing!”
Reality:
The “Beacon” (or “Aurora Beacon News”), which you didn’t even know was a newspaper, was in fact the source that you quoted. Welcome to Aurora–you obviously have no knowledge of our fair City. The article was one of a series they did in which they highlighted the major players in this controversy. That article was designed to allow Steve Trombley to give his perspective. It was part of an editorial series. It is not a valid source to prove any “need” of the community. And regardless, if they broke zoning ordinance by applying as a for-profit, but installing a not-for-profit, then they cannot continue to use the site. No not-for-profit could use the site, no matter how great someone might think they were.

Reality, perhaps you missed my post about PP closing early on Thursday’s because they didn’t have enough business…
Another reason you can’t trust that particular source:–there is an abortion clinic in Fargo, ND. “Red River Women’s Clinic of Fargo, North Dakota offers high-quality affordable abortion and family planning services to the women of the Fargo-Moorhead area, all of North Dakota, northwestern Minnesota and northern South Dakota.” It was the first hit when I googled “abortion North Dakota.”
The “Beacon” (or “Aurora Beacon News”), which you didn’t even know was a newspaper, was in fact the source that you quoted.
And yet, someone thought I was Steve Trombley! Hilarious!
Ok, I’m willing to laugh that part off. If you were Steve Trombley, presumably you would know that the Beacon was a local newspaper because you would have been interviewed by them.
He defended his decision to bring the facility into Aurora under a different name and said he would do it again to protect the building contractors from harassment.
Reality, you’re all for “CHOICE.” What about the choice of the contractors who walked off the job when they saw the bullet proof glass and realized what they were building? Oh, that’s right, their choice doesn’t matter to you.
And EH is right, that story is complete BS. Not only is there one is ND but Laura just posted a link for one in SD on another thread. Give me a break!
LB:
Obviously you can’t stand up for you views in public,
The issue is avoiding unwarranted harassment of innocent third parties, not standing up for one’s views in public.
that is really the definition of a coward.
As if shoving rotting stillbirth photos in children’s faces on the street were some noble display of courage… pathetic.
Kristen:
Reality, you’re all for “CHOICE.”
That’s right: reproductive choice for all.
What about the choice of the contractors who walked off the job when they saw the bullet proof glass and realized what they were building?
They are free to seek reproductive health care at the facility of their choosing.
And EH is right, that story is complete BS. Not only is there one is ND but Laura just posted a link for one in SD on another thread.
Maybe it is. Or maybe the closer clinics were booked solid, and this woman needed to have an appointment right away because she was almost past the legal limit. Or maybe she was just stupid, or an attention whore.
They are free to seek reproductive health care at the facility of their choosing.
Posted by: reality at January 7, 2008 4:49 PM
That was just stupid, yes stupid. I mean really, if you’re going to have a position stand by it and don’t use some trite answer to dodge a question.
I mean really, if you’re going to have a position stand by it and don’t use some trite answer to dodge a question.
That is my position. I favor reproductive health care. I stand by that position, even for workers who walked off the job at PP Aurora.
Obviously you aren’t worth debating…simpleton.
OOOooooo, careful Kristen…..
That was almost RUDE!!
;)
:) Hooves, just stating the obvious!
Oh no…you were being hateful and/or foolish and/or rude…
I saw you!
Reality-
OK, I have to agree. This debate is going nowhere. You used an incorrect source of which you knew nothing to make a point that has no bearing on the discussion. Then, you changed the point of debate when this was made apparent to you. Apparently, you would prefer to hide behind the clarion call “reproductive health care for all!” than seriously consider the breech of ethics that your hero Streve Trombley engineered, and which publicly damages the creditability of the entire Planned Parenthood organization.
Well…since reality got booted off the island shall I try to play devil’s advocate so y’all can practice?!
…you have to start by calling me a name.
EH —

What could possibly be unethical about protecting innocent third parties from unwarranted harassment?
and which publicly damages the creditability of the entire Planned Parenthood organization.
How could it possibly damage their credibility? They’re already “baby killers.” How much worse does it get than that? lol
No, but seriously: most people in the US probably don’t even know what Aurora Planned Parenthood is by now. It got about 15 seconds of national coverage back in October, and nothing since. Maybe it damages their credibility with pro-lifers, but hey, like I said: you already think they’re worse than Satan, anyway, so who cares?
EH –
He/she is gone. And I say good riddance since he/she is incapable of intelligent arguments. (Unfortunately.)
Well…since reality got booted off the island
lol
Yeah, reality got booted off this internet island ages ago.
What could possibly be unethical about protecting innocent third parties from unwarranted harassment?

No matter for the innocent third parties (contractors) that wanted nothing to do with building the PP. But, as I said, that doesn’t matter to you.
Maybe reality is Laura’s alter ego….
Oh for crying out loud reality…I’m PL and I could do a better job defending your position than you have…
Hooves:

800 MILLION women dead by back ally abortions, blah, blah, blah…
Planned Parenthood is the best thing since sliced bread, (excuse me while I go vomit…)

Well, Kristen
See reality…thinking isn’t painfull….even if your wrong!
Got carried away with the “L’s”
Painful
That what I SAID Hooves! ;)

PS. No chance of me switching sides, especially now that I’m watching my 3 yr. old walking around in her “princess” shoes!
Kristen,
Yes but mine was more verbose!
Kristen —
I loved the princess stage. My princess (16 y.o) now has to have the real shoes and the whole prom princess thing. Enjoy, Enjoy!
I’m off in a minute for a local zoning meeting — fighting through tremendous lightening to see what transpires.
Have a good night.
Hooves:
I define life as beginning once a baby is born?not before then.
Not quite. I just don’t feel that fetal life is more important than a woman’s right to decide whether she wants to have a baby or not.
I believe that a pregnancy is nothing more than any other correctible medical condition that can be ?cured? by a simple medical procedure.
Not quite. Pregnancy is great for women who want to bring life in to the world, but having a family should be a happy choice, not a harsh, inescapable punishment. I don’t think women who want abortions deserve to die.
I believe it is a good thing that this medical procedure is available to women in a legal capacity.
True.
I believe that the rumors of malpractice, deceit and abuse committed by the abortion industry are fabricated and/or exaggerated.
Some are, some aren’t.
I believe the tape of all those clinics advising an underage girl to lie about her age so they wouldn?t have to report her boyfriend is a fake.
Well, it was hardly a credible source.
I believe the research linking abortion to breast cancer is inconclusive.
No, I believe the link is fabricated.
I believe there is no such thing as PAS. I believe that women who regret their abortions are in the significant minority.
Right-o.
I believe that those who build abortion clinics are doing nothing more malignant than building a dental office.
Damn skippy.
I believe that deceit (aka: sneaking) is totally justified to circumvent public notification of a new clinic in the neighborhood?
When necessary and lawful, as in Aurora, sure.
after all, the vast majority of Americans support abortion and it?s only a small group of the vocal minority that draws so much undue attention to a fabricated accusation of fraud.
Nice. That’s pretty good. A for effort.

I kinda like “I’m rubber you’re glue….
Hooves, you can now expect reality to copy and paste what you wrote everytime someone asks a question…
Hey, at least reality admits it’s a life – they can’t claim ignorance when judgement comes.
I think “reality” is either Tom Weisner or Alayne Weingartz….These are probably the only two in the world that would take “being Steve Trombley” as a compliment…
(reality…definately a name either would call themselves! LOL)

In just one day, I’ve been called: Steve Trombley, an employee of the Beacon, Laura, Laura’s little sister, and now Tom Weisner and Alayne Weingartz. Is it really so hard for you to believe that there are other pro-choice people in the world, besides the few you already know of?
reality, you seem to have a good sense of humor. Your 7:38 comment just gave me the first good laugh I have had all day. It is kinda funny when I look back on it.
