Lunch Break: “Carousel” soliloquy
by LauraLoo
Dating back to 1956, this is one of Gordon MacRae’s finest moments of all time. In this scene, Billy has just found out that Julie is pregnant with his baby.

I love the musical “Carousel”…sad, though, but very well done by Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. This is a really good scene, too.
I’ve heard of the movie, but I’ve never seen it. So…what did the baby turn out to be? Boy or girl?
Hans, do you know?
Gordon MacRae is considered by many to be the best male vocalist of that golden age of movie musicals.
It was indeed a girl. The same ballet dancer who was in Oklahoma! along with MacRae. Unfortunately, Billy Bigelow took the wrong road for looking out for his family - getting into a robbery gone terribly wrong.
Hans,
Wait, but you know that’s not the WHOLE story. He receives forgiveness in the end. It’s a sad musical, but Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae do an extremely good job and it has some awesome music.
Sorry to be a bummer, but have you ever noticed that men tend to assume they are having a boy? And when there is fertility trouble, people always assume it’s the woman?
Jacqueline,
Not EVERY man is like that. Yes, there’s some who are, but not ALL of them.
Mother In Texas,
You’re right, of course. For an unusually sad musical it does end with forgiveness and hope. And it’s “theme song” is “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, which Jerry Lewis sings every year at the end of his telethon.
Jacqueline, that’s the point of this soliloquy! This big galoot expects “my boy Bill” but then is more than accepting that it will be (is) a girl.
