Breaking news: Bush’s 2009 budget proposal cuts Title X $, increases abstinence $
by Jacqueline Harvey and Valerie Ryan
President Bush’s proposed 2009 budget includes an initial $550 million to Title X funding for “family planning,” most of which goes to Planned Parenthood.
But the plan also includes a cumulative $3.3 billion cut to Title X over the next 3 years, while increasing funding earmarked for abstinence education.
Meanwhile, the Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood’s research arm, says abstinence education has been successful. Yes, you heard that right….
Reports Guttmacher:
From 1995 to 2002, formal instruction about birth control methods declined from 81% to 66% among males and from 87% to 70% among females. This, combined with increases in reports of abstinence education among males (from 74% to 83%), resulted in a higher proportion of teenagers’ receiving instruction only about abstinence (males, 9% to 24%; females, 8% to 21%).
A 2006 analysis by Columbia University and Guttmacher Institute researchers found that 86% of the decline in teen pregnancy was due to dramatic improvements in contraceptive use, including more teens using any contraceptive methods at all, more teens using certain highly effective methods and more teens using multiple methods. Approximately 14% of the decline was due to more adolescent girls delaying sexual intercourse.
Yes, according to Guttmatcher, after teens started to receive the abstinence education, teen pregnancy went down with 14% more girls remaining abstinent.

…….
which will also mostly go to Planned Parenthood. mark my words.
Maybe they give give $20 coupons next year.
Hal –
I love you!
I needed to laugh even if it was a jab at us!
*smooch*
That was quite Hugh Morris, Hal.
thanks Valerie, love you guys too. (. Pardon the typo
Is should have said “maybe they can give $20 coupons next year.”
You see, according to Guttmatcher after teens started to receive the abstinence education, (which does include birth control) teen pregnancy went down with 14% more girls being abstinent.
…………………………….
This makes no sense. How many teenagers are too stupid to know that no BC is necessary if they aren’t having sex? What teen is so stupid that they have to be told this? Why would any money be needed to teach what everyone already knows? How can you even begin to pretend that telling kids what they and everyone has always known could possibly make any impact on teen pregnancy numbers?
From the post:
“You see, according to Guttmatcher after teens started to receive the abstinence education, (which does include birth control) teen pregnancy went down with 14% more girls being abstinent.”
Aside from noting that you really have to torture the Guttmacher study to come up with that conclusion, I have one other comment….if “abstinence education” includes teaching about birth control, isn’t it actually called “comprehensive sex education?” That’s what they called it when I was in highschool 20 years ago….
Planned Parenthood doesn’t need ANY Tax Payers $$$$. They are a FOR PROFIT organization. How about giving the $$$ to maternity homes & services that help college aged pregnant women keep their babies and continue to go to school. That would be a better use of this money that ALWAYS goes to Banned Parenthood.

Maternity homes? What century were you born in?
There are still homes that are places for unwed mothers to stay while pregnant. They are places of support for the mothers who give birth to their babies. They HELP the mothers.
I’m not talking about the “aunt” that “Susie” went to live with. *rolls eyes*
Yes, homes for unwed mothers – like the one run by Army of God member John Burt:

Anti-abortion activist John Burt is going to remain in prison for a long time.
Burt lost his final appeal this week in the Florida 1st District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee.
He was arrested and charged in 2003 with four counts of lewd or lascivious child molestation and one count of lewd/lascivious misconduct. He was sentenced in 2004 to 18 years in prison.
Burt, who lived in Santa Rosa County at the time, was denied his final appeal Wednesday, according to assistant state attorney supervisor Harmon Massey.
The case drew national attention when Burt, who was tied to anti-abortion violence, was accused by a 15-year-old girl in his care at Our Fathers House, a Christian-based boarding school for pregnant teens.
The facility was licensed under the Florida Association of Christian Child Caring Agencies, which allowed it to bypass standard Florida child-care licensing regulations regarding boarding schools.
The victim fled the lockdown facility and went to officials. With no proof to support the allegations, the Santa Rosa Sheriff

I’m glad they put him in jail where he belongs. Our Fathers House made a BAD hiring decision. You would think they’d have checked his criminal record!
FF:
I read a story about a grade school teacher that molested children as well. Perhaps the school should be closed and whole pro-education movement should shut down.
Honestly, if it was an abortion provider instead of a pregnancy counselor, how would that be different? Are abortionists all nice, kind people?
What exactly is your point?
