“Coming out”: Pro-choicers want women to talk about abortions

Sunday Word: The abolitionist history of “O Holy Night”

Every year during December I have been posting the surprising abolitionist history behind some of our most beloved Christmas hymns. Pro-lifers identify closely with those 150 years ago who fought to free another oppressed class of people. This Sunday, Wk 2 of 4, we examine… O Holy Night In 1847, his parish priest asked French poet Placide Cappeau […]

Do women’s rights = abortion?

Because in some people’s minds, “women’s rights” is abortion. They think that if you aren’t in favor of abortion on demand, then you must be opposed to “women’s rights.” On the other hand, they think that if you favor abortion on demand, then that’s all there is to women’s rights. ~ Rebecca Hamilton, Patheos, December […]

Stanek weekend Q: Do you regift?

I feel like taking a break from the heavy burden of our pro-life work for a fun community chat this weekend.

So! Let’s talk! This weekend’s question is: Do you regift?

I heard a report yesterday that even wealthy Americans regift!

2014-12-13_0830

Per the report, that regifting percentage is up 10% from last year.

If you regift, what sorts of items do you recycle? Here’s what the survey says…

  • At Life Training Institute, The Failed Atheist links to his excellent response to the viral UK video of a pregnant pro-choicer chastising Abort 67 pro-lifers for holding abortion victim images in front of an abortion facility. TFA responds to the woman’s arguments, such as, “It’s wrong to show abortion imagery because we don’t know why they are having an abortion,” “You’re a hypocrite because you’ve had an abortion,” and “Some of the women wanting an abortion may have been abused.”

The Doula Project helps “pregnant people,” not just women

Parker: Yes, a woman can be both feminist and conservative

by Kelli Only in Washington would anyone ask this question: Can a woman be both feminist and conservative? Why, yes, she can! But the question does deserve a more serious answer so women can stop fussing over labels and litmus tests to determine whether a woman who doesn’t fall in line with feminist ideology can […]

  • Suzy B agrees with pro-choice forces on a lawsuit against the alleged discrimination against pregnant employees in the workplace:

Both pro-life and pro-choice groups have filed amicus briefs on behalf of Peggy Young. The Women’s Law Project and Legal Momentum argued that the previous ruling in favor of UPS was incorrect on the basis of “misconceiving gender stereotypes in pregnancy discrimination.” Americans United for Life has filed an amicus brief, which the Susan B. Anthony List, among other pro-life groups have signed on to, coming from a different approach, standing up for the unborn and women. The brief argues that in creating the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, Congress was trying to “protect women from economic pressure to abort their children because of pregnancy discrimination.”

The problem with Cecile Richards’ abortion

elle-01-cecile-ClKQmM-blogPlanned Parenthood President Cecile Richards disclosed in Elle in October that she had had an abortion:

I had an abortion. It was the right decision for me and my husband, and it wasn’t a difficult decision. Before becoming president of Planned Parenthood eight years ago, I hadn’t really talked about it beyond family and close friends. But I’m here to say, when politicians argue and shout about abortion, they’re talking about me—and millions of other women around the country.

At the time I thought the “it wasn’t a difficult decision” line was terribly insensitive to Richards’ three surviving children. They certainly know it could have been any one of them who was snuffed, in which case so what, according to their mother?

Sunday Word: The abolitionist history behind “Go Tell It on the Mountain”

The abolitionist story behind treasured Christmas hymns, Wk 1 of 4…

“Go Tell It on the Mountain”

John Wesley Work, Jr., an African-American professor at Fisk University in Nashville, first published the lyrics and music to this slave spiritual in 1907.

Writes Ace Collins in his book, Stories Behind the Best-Loved Songs of Christmas:

The song had come from the fields of the South, born from the inspiration of a slave’s Christmas, and it was unique in that, in the hundreds of Negro spirituals the work family saved from extinction, few had been written about Christmas. Most, as would seem only natural, centered on earthly pain and suffering, and the joy and happiness that only heaven seemed to offer.

Stanek weekend Q: Appropriate or not to equate Ferguson/NYC deaths with abortion?

MTIwNjA4NjM0MDQ5NzU4NzMyRock singer Ted Nugent took heat for wondering why those outraged about the grand jury’s decision in Ferguson, Missouri, not to indict a white policeman for killing a black “thug” aren’t equally outraged over black genocide via abortion:

And dont claim that “black lives matter” when you ignore the millions you abort & slaughter each & every day by other blacks. Those of us with a soul do indeed believe black lives matter, as all lives matter. So quit killin each other you f*ckin idiots.

Billboard’s Joe Lynch wrote in response:

  • Big Blue Wave discusses a Finnish study on reducing suicide risk following abortion. While most in the pro-choice camp deny there is any link at all to an increased risk of suicide, this study recommends a mental health checkup two to three weeks following an abortion. However, the study also noted that while this intervention may have been beneficial, the rate of reduction was not statistically significant.

Pro-abortion doula says she “loves and respects” all birth choices

Del FaveroI identify as VERY pro-choice in my political views, however once I became pregnant, I realized that I also found the idea that pregnant people deserved the right to their own bodily autonomy during childbirth to be integral…

I identify as queer when it comes to my personal life, which allows me to gain a wider understanding of the specific needs that people have in the birth community. I have done plenty of research and reading to educate myself on the notion of white privilege and being a “placeholder” for those from marginalized groups…

“Sexual rights” trump all other rights, including free speech

by Kelli Abortion’s now-sacred status is symptomatic of something far more sinister: the sweeping success of the Sexual Revolution. So-called “sexual rights” are now considered to be the most important “rights” our society has, and take precedence over all other rights, regardless of how fundamental they are…. Freedom of speech? This is now a quaint […]

Why in the world do Black women’s groups see abortion as the answer to violence?

1920In The American Prospect, Cherisse Scott, founder of SisterReach, an African-American “reproductive justice” group centered in Memphis, laments the passage in Tennessee of Amendment 1 this past month.

Amendment 1 undoes a 2000 Tennessee Supreme Court decision that blocked any pro-life laws from being passed in the state. Scott writes:

UK tells pro-lifers using “American” tactics at clinics to “back off”

by Kelli We need to talk about abortion because the phoney war (small groups of vigil-antis outside clinics, praying, thrusting rosary beads and plastic foetuses into women’s hands, giving out leaflets packed with fake science and scare stories) – is over. • Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life notes the worldwide concern over premature birth, as it remains “the leading cause of all under-five deaths.” But there is failure to recognize the fingerprints of abortion in this problem:

A wealth of worldwide research has established that induced abortion substantially increases the risk of preterm birth in subsequent pregnancies. For example, a 2009 systematic review published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology found that a history of one induced abortion increased the risk of preterm birth by 36% and increased the risk of low birth weight by 35%.

Pro-choicer: Pro-lifers are not motivated by misogyny

war-on-womenby Kelli

I’m a pro-choice individual who actually acknowledges that those who disagree with me are not raging, full blown misogynists. What’s my reasoning you might ask? I’m happy to oblige.

First and foremost, I don’t buy the idea that people who are pro-life hold that position because they seek to control women’s bodies. This is a myth perpetuated by many Democrats as part of the “War on Women.” To attack the pro-life position as a “War on Women” is to completely ignore the much more widely cited reason for being pro-life, which is concern that fetus’s [sic] being aborted are in fact alive and sentient….

Former punk artist: Adoption “crueller than death”

by Carder Mum suggests adoption, but I think that’s crueller than death. That’s my opinion. To burden a child with abandonment and rejection right from the start. A living death. All or nothing, that’s me. I choose nothing. Nothingness for baby. I think this is a responsible decision. I will not countenance any other option. […]

  • ProWomanProLife says the Canadian Medical Association Journal is pushing for RU-486 in Canada as the answer to unequal access to surgical abortions. Apparently, “Health Canada has been considering approval of mifepristone (known as RU-486) since December 2012,” as “the drug is considered the gold standard for inducing safe and early non-surgical abortion.”

But PLPW points out that not all abortion supporters agree:

Three pro-abortion feminists wrote an incredibly well researched book entitled “RU486 – Myths and Misconceptions” in 1992, describing RU-486 as a “new form of medical violence that endangers women’s lives and violates their right to be free from bodily harm.”

UK university wants to ban students’ off-campus pro-life speech

The university environment has long been a bastion of free speech, which the proposed motion seeks to attack. Stanek weekend Q: Has society done a disservice to Millennial Moms?

millennial-momsSorry, a rather lengthy excerpt from a fascinating post at Patheos.com, but it’s all so good!

Understanding the domestic arts as, well, art, has almost totally disappeared from our cultural landscape. Technology (and the corresponding rise in collective wealth that allows most of the US to own it) has rendered many time-honored skills – traditionally passed from mother to daughter – superfluous.
