LA Times columnist compares HHS Mandate objections to 1960s racism

The Supreme Court is expected to decide in the next week or so whether to take up the question of whether a for-profit company can deny its female employees contraception coverage in employer-provided health plans because the company owner has a religious objection. We’re not talking about religious institutions here. We’re talking about a secular […]

  • Andrea Mrozek writes about the death of notorious Canadian abortionist Henry Morgentaler:

Abortion is the “choice” in that critical moment in a woman’s life when hope went on holiday.

This is Morgentaler’s legacy: The death of a child, renamed a choice, and without limit in Canada.

He deserves neither all the credit nor all the blame, of course. When the Supreme Court of Canada heard the now infamous Morgentaler case in 1988, their intention was not to bestow abortion as an unfettered right. Instead, the court went so far as to acknowledge a legitimate public interest in restricting abortion, and then threw the question back to Parliament — which has been holding the ball ever since.

  • At the Washington Post, Sarah Kliff offers a mea culpa on her description of the Gosnell trial as a “local crime story” and outlines the basics.
  • The New York Times has sent reporter Trip Gabriel to the trial, and he has an article noting the role social media played in getting the national media to cover the story.
  • Here’s the Washington Post’s article with a quote from NRLC’s Mary Spaulding Balch:

“The significance of the trial is that it shows just how reluctant people are to look at what goes on in abortion facilities,” said Mary Spaulding Balch, director for state legislation for National Right to Life, a group that opposes abortion. “This is something they don’t know about, and they would be shocked to hear about it.”

  • Americans United for Life has filed two briefs supporting the conscience rights of Hobby Lobby and Autocam against the HHS contraceptive mandate:

The briefs… demonstrate that “emergency contraception,” life-ending drugs mislabeled as “contraception,” can prevent an embryo from implanting or kill an already-implanted embryo, and that forcing employers to provide coverage for such drugs violates the fundamental freedom of conscience.

  • At the Huffington Post, Cassie Farrell responds to a piece by Canadian abortion proponent Joyce Arthur:

What Choice Joyce and her cronies need to understand is that their lies simply aren’t cutting it in Canada anymore. Instead of formulating a sound argument, they attack the legitimacy of the debate. However, the debate is on, and isn’t going away until the right to life for all Canadians is acknowledged and ensured.

“October Baby” to open in 220 new theaters this weekend; success vexes abortion group

I’m sure October Baby producers loved that headline, which sandwiched their little pro-life movie between one of the top box office draws of all time and the sequel to another box office smash.

Here’s another one for their scrapbook…

by JivinJ, host of the blog, JivinJehoshaphat Jonah Goldberg on Democrats’ dishonesty over Obama’s contraceptive mandate: The Obama campaign insists that “if Mitt Romney and a few Republican senators get their way, employers could be making women’s healthcare decisions for them” and require that women seek a permission slip to obtain birth control. It’s all […]
