NYT Opinion flashback: Was abolitionism a failure?

by Kelli Today, we point to abolition as proof that we can improve society by eliminating one glaring evil. This is what unites “new abolitionists” across the political spectrum, whether they’re working to end the death penalty or ban abortion. We like the idea of sweeping change, of an idealistic movement triumphing over something so […]

NYT op-ed: Support abortion even if it’s not a “compelling story”

by Kelli By repeating only the gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, terrifying abortion stories, we protect a lie: that abortion isn’t normal. We have learned to think of abortion with shame and fear. We have accepted the damaging idea that a person who wants an abortion must grovel before the consciences of others…. We have to stop categorizing […]

“Pro-choice” proponents turn on Planned Parenthood

wolves circling planned parenthoodI wrote on August 4 that a July 28 New York Times article about Planned Parenthood’s decision to abandon the term “pro-choice” had triggered a race war within the abortion movement.

This was because Planned Parenthood steered NYT journalist Jackie Calmes to seven white leaders of abortion groups for quotes but no women of color.

Plus, Planned Parenthood gave no credit to WOC groups for expanding on abortion advocacy to include other “reproductive justice” issues, a term WOC coined two decades ago. This July 31 tweet didn’t come out of nowhere…

New York Times touches off race war inside abortion movement

reproductive justice abortion-pro-choice-ireland-3 (1)If you didn’t know what was going on inside pro-abortion world, the Huffington Post piece Planned Parenthood Executive VP Dawn Laguens posted on July 30 in response to the July 28 New York Times article, “Advocates shun ‘pro-choice’ to expand message,” would seem out of left field.

As I explained in a blog last week, the NYT article simply elaborated on a decision Planned Parenthood made 18 months ago to abandon the term “pro-choice” as antiquated.

This is where Laguens seemed to go off on a tangent:

  • Secular Pro-Life has two excellent posts. In the first, their press release rejects the stereotype of pro-lifers advanced by Comedy Central’s The Daily Show guest host, John Oliver, [who] “implied that abortion restrictions are motivated solely by religion and not by secular concern for the human right to life.” The second post, discusses the censoring of three pro-life female physicians who “were scheduled to give presentations at a Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) meeting in Seoul” but were told after they arrived that their presentations had been cancelled because they “had prepared presentations on risks of abortion.”

Abortionist Peter Bours will turn 69 years old this July and has announced his retirement and the closure of his Eugene, Oregon, abortion mill effective February 28.

Campbell Brown in NYT: “Planned Parenthood’s self-destructive behavior”

Former NBC and CNN news anchor Campbell Brown penned a New York Times op ed over the weekend entitled, “Planned Parenthood’s self-destructive behavior.”

With such a favorable title, pro-lifers might be tempted to glam on to Brown as one of us. Not so fast.

Before lodging her complaint against Planned Parenthood, Campbell first gave it kudos. She promoted the United States’ largest abortion provider as really not being about that, stating, “Most of Planned Parenthood’s work focuses on health care for low-income women, things like screenings for breast cancer and diabetes, and family planning.”

To back up that claim Campbell parroted Planned Parenthood’s line that “abortions represent only 3 percent of its work,” when in actuality about 10% of Planned Parenthood clients get abortions, according to FactCheck.org, and 38.4% of its clinic income comes from abortion, according to Live Action.

Campbell also acknowledged in her piece she is pro-abortion.

So what was her gist? That Planned Parenthood has morphed into an arm of the Democrat Party, to its detriment:

More bad news for Obama’s woo on women: 57% oppose forced religious contraception coverage

I wrote yesterday that President Obama’s strategy to attract women voters with his HHS contraceptive mandate isn’t working. Both a New York Times/CBS poll and Bloomberg poll showed a huge drop in support among women for Obama since 2008. Here’s more bad news. Another NYT/CBS poll, conducted March 7-11, shows 57% of Americans think religious […]
