  • At New Feminism, Jennifer Lahl decries California’s new bill that would allow birth certificates to become politicized “by allowing each parent to self-identify as mother, father, or simply ‘parent.'” Lahl argues that this could potentially do a great disservice to “adoptees and those born of anonymous donors”:

The birth certificate legally documents who a child’s parents are. That is, who the birth mother and birth father are. It is a record of who is genetically related to a child. It is not intended to be a means by which adults decide what they want to be called. Rather, it answers the question, who can this child’s beginning be traced to? Who gave birth? Who died?

Planned Parenthood worries it’s “on the menu”

Planned Parenthood tweeted the graphic below this afternoon, and I loved it so much I had to share it. The only item I’m unsure of on Planned Parenthood’s checklist of horrors is, “Introduce medically unnecessary regulations targeting doctors who provide abortion.” I know on Wednesday Senator David Vitter introduced the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, […]

Two significant pro-life bills introduced during 1st week of new Congress

capitol-sun-575Representative Diane Black just issued a press statement announcing that she, along with Reps. Bill Flores, Jackie Walorski, Chris Smith, Joe Pitts, and over 80 House cosponsors, have reintroduced the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act,” which would prohibit any organization that provide abortions from receiving Title X Family Planning dollars.

The Hill: Republicans will try to choke off Planned Parenthood funding two ways

UPDATE, 9:50a: Word from a congressional source is the continuing resolution (2011 budget for remaining 7 months) will not be released until tomorrow. At this point the measure to cut Title X funding altogether is just a strong rumor. Need to see it in writing. 9:45a: We already knew about Congressman Mike Pence’s bill, the […]

Pence introduces Planned Parenthood defunding bill

UPDATE 1/10, 10:48a: The list of cosponsors is up. Is your congressperson on the list? If not, ask him or her to sign on, as I just did with my own. Also, we have a bill number: HR217. 1/7, 5:40p: I wrote yesterday that in the coming days and weeks House pro-lifers would be introducing […]

Focus on four federal pro-life bills

In coming days and weeks pro-lifers will be asked to contact their congresspersons to support four pro-life bills. I’m going to list them now, because getting piecemeal calls to action down the road may become confusing and overwhelming. But boiling it down, we’re being called to focus on these four:

Weekend question I: What actions can and will the House/state pro-life majorities take?

Pro-abort Katha Pollitt gave a nice run-down November 10 in The Nation of the possibilities before a Congress that will soon have much more pro-life passion coursing through its veins: When the 112th Congress convenes in January it will have at least 53 additional antichoice Republicans in the House and 5 in the Senate…. Supporters […]
