  • Wesley J. Smith discusses a man sentenced to life in prison in Tennessee who has asked to be euthanized so he can donate his organs to his parents. Smith points out that while this won’t happen for a variety of reasons yet in the U.S., Belgium is ahead of the game in coupling euthanasia with organ donation and in giving prisoners the option of euthanasia.
  • Priests for Life has been granted a temporary stay against the HHS contraceptive mandate:

“Without the stay granted today, we would have been in the position of being fined for failing to comply with the mandate,” Father Pavone said. “But no matter what happens, we will not obey the mandate, nor will we pay fines to the government.”The stay will remain in effect while the Supreme Court considers the case.

  • Americans United for Life applauds Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, who “signed into a law a groundbreaking, pro-life measure that passed with tremendous bi-partisan support and will expand the enforcement options for any violation of state abortion laws as well as provide greater protections for young girls who become victims of sexual abuse.”

As seen in Live Action’s undercover videos, Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry train their staff to turn a blind eye to sexual abuse and statutory rape. (“I didn’t hear the age. I don’t want to know the age.”) AUL’s Dr. Charmaine Yoest adds, “Too often, sex offenders fake a parent’s signature to use abortion as a cover up for abuse, and for too long, the abortion industry has turned a blind eye to crimes committed by evil men, as they profit from the cover up.”

2015 summer pro-life youth boot camps!

boot camp finalby Jill and Kelli

Following the tradition we started four years ago, we’re posting all the upcoming summer pro-life teen- and college-aged boot camps we found listed around the country. If we missed any, please let Kelli know.

As I’ve said before, if I had teens in the house  I’d not only send them to church camp every summer, I’d send them to at least one pro-life boot camp during their high school years. These provide a great opportunity to build strength and confidence in the sanctity of life and also launch lifelong pro-life friendships.

Pro-life protest of Speaker Boehner, Part 2

2015-04-09_1359

On March 25 I was one of eight people arrested outside Speaker Boehner’s office in Washington, DC, as we protested the House GOP’s failure to pass the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act two months after they had failed to pass it on the day they’d promised to pass it.

One of our two goals was to get movement on this 20-week abortion ban, when movement had otherwise stalled by all outward appearances (the other goal being to refocus attention back on the 20-week-plus preborn baby, who feels the excruciating pain of being torn limb from limb when aborted).

Once our protest was announced, we learned movement had indeed stalled. Several sources confirmed the hold-up was with amended language.

Amazingly, the bottleneck was unclogged just one week before our protest, when more than one solution was suddenly presented to interested GOP House members. They went from 0 to 200% in just a few short days.

Nonetheless, no vote was announced before our protest. Then, on March 30, the congressional Easter Break commenced, which will run through April 10.

We are hopeful GOP House leadership has not let the Easter Break interfere with reactivated plans to move the Pain Capable Act forward. We are hopeful there will be an announcement of a vote soon after representatives return to Washington.

But we are not waiting. The movement to press GOP House leadership to vote on this bill is growing, from three pro-life activist groups to 11. Last week this larger group announced plans to hold a protest at Speaker Boehner’s office on May 7, at 12:00 p.m., if by that time the House has not yet passed the Pain Capable Act. This group includes:

CEC For Life
Christian Defense Coalition
Citizens for a Pro-Life Society
Created Equal
Defend Life
Issues4Life Foundation
JillStanek.com
Operation Rescue
Maryland Coalition for Life
Pro-Life Action League
Pro-Life Action Ministries

Other groups are most certainly welcome. Please email me if interested. And if you live in the DC area, please make plans now to attend.

To be clear, the vote must have happened by May 7 for us to call off our protest. It won’t be enough to announce an upcoming vote date. Been there, done that, been burned.

Also, be sure to sign Concerned Women for America’s petition.

And Susan B. Anthony List has just launched a call drive.

  • Bound4Life says pro-abortion bills are being passed and signed under the radar in Washington, D.C., which “could force all employers in the nation’s capital to cover abortion-on-demand in health plans, including pro-life groups and religious schools.” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (pictured far left) signed the bill, while outgoing mayor Vincent Gray (pictured far right) had refused to sign it, citing “serious constitutional concerns.”
  • Abstinence Clearinghouse says the National Center on Sexual Exploitation has a new 2015 Dirty Dozen list. Which organizations are on it?

This list highlights each of the top offenders and explains how they are currently contributing to sexual exploitation. Following the explanations is a list of actions that the public can take to persuade these companies to change their policies and practices. Among other, the list for 2015 includes… the book Fifty Shades of Grey for its glamorization of sexual violence.

  • Culture Campaign points to a new review that shows, contrary to previous “morally indefensible” claims, that Plan B does indeed cause abortions.
  • Live Action News also weighs in on the emergency contraceptives as abortifacients debate:

“Many doctors and researchers,” the authors elaborate, “claim that it has either no – or at most – an extremely small chance of working via abortion.” But “the latest scientific and medical evidence now demonstrates that levonorgestrel emergency contraception theoretically works via abortion quite often.”

GOP’s Abortion Barbie exploits pro-life millennials for photo op

2015-02-06_1223

On February 3, a group of Millennials with Students for Life of America paid a second visit to the Washington, D.C., office of Congresswoman Renee Ellmers.

Ellmers calls herself pro-life but infamously torpedoed a vote on the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act two weeks ago, a bill that would protect babies 20 weeks and older from abortion.

I was with SFLA the first time its students visited Ellmers’ office on January 22. The student group has been particularly keen to speak with Ellmers, since one of her reasons for opposing a vote on the 20-week ban is that it might turn off young people. According to National Journal:

In a closed-door open-mic session of House Republicans, Rep. Renee Ellmers… [said] she believes the bill will cost the party support among millennials, according to several sources in the room.

“I have urged leadership to reconsider bringing it up next week.… We got into trouble last year, and I think we need to be careful again; we need to be smart about how we’re moving forward,” Ellmers said in an interview. “The first vote we take, or the second vote, or the fifth vote, shouldn’t be on an issue where we know that millennials—social issues just aren’t as important [to them].”

Had Ellmers bothered to attend the March for Life, she would have seen a throng of 500,000 pro-lifers comprised largely of Millennials. There’s also a Knights of Columbus poll, a National Journal poll specifically on a 20-week ban, and even research by the pro-abortion group NARAL – all corroborating Millennial opposition to abortion.

SFLA wanted to speak with Ellmers about her misunderstanding of Millennials and to express disappointment in her sabotage of the 20-week ban, as described here:

At her door, we were eventually greeted by a representative who directed us to a Legislative Assistant, Kristi Thompson.  She instructed us out into the hallway probably because our students would have crowded the office.  Our students patiently took turns sharing their concerns about the Pain Capable bill being delayed in January….

Kristi listened intently, thanking us for our comments.  After about 10 minutes of discussion we began to wrap things up when the Congresswoman herself approached her office.  It seemed she had just come in from outside since she was wearing her coat and carrying a coffee cup.  Congresswoman Ellmers appeared happy to see us and invited us to share our concerns again with her personally. However, when we tried to videotape our conversation, Kristi insisted we not use video, only photos.

As I wrote in a previous blog post, Ellmers apparently thought she was walking into a student photo up and got stuck.

unnamed (2)

So Ellmers turned around and created her own self-serving photo op.

Michele Hendrickson, Capital Area Regional Coordinator for SFLA, described the scene:

The staff person caught our students off guard and was like – hey, let’s pose for a photo! We did not ask for it. The students obviously didn’t realize what she was doing, and it didn’t feel like my place to tell them whether or not to get a picture with her. I felt pressured to be in the picture, but I politely excused myself from it.

As you can see in the Facebook post above, Congresswoman Ellmers was happy pose with some of the very Millennials she said don’t care about abortion, going so far as to exploit SFLA’s name for misleading political gain. As SFLA responded in a Facebook comment:

We weren’t there for a photo op. We wanted to ask Congresswoman Ellmers why she was using millennials as a scapegoat to note vote on the 20 week abortion ban.

The right thing for Ellmers to do is answer SFLA’s question, then see to it that the 20-week abortion ban gets a vote SOON, contacting all the people she lobbied to oppose it and tell them she was wrong.

Either that, or remove the photo, Congresswoman Ellmers.

It has been two weeks since GOP House leaders torpedoed the 20-week abortion ban, and I’m madder than ever

136048906-speaker-of-the-house-rep-john-boehner-listens-to.jpg.CROP.promo-mediumlarge

Two weeks ago today Republican House leaders outdid themselves on the scale of betrayal by suddenly pulling a vote on the Pain Capable 20-week abortion ban the day before 500,000 pro-lifers to whom they’d promised that vote descended on Washington for the March for Life.

I was pretty angry that day, and, if anything, I’m angrier today. I’m not alone in wanting the political scalp of turncoat ringleader Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (pictured above with Speaker John Boehner) and whoever all her allies are found to be.

Some have been outed: Reps. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania and Jackie Walorski of Indiana. At least one other is now trying to disclaim responsibility.

They’re running scared from the avalanche of pro-life anger.

I’m all in on ousting every last culprit and have let my friends in D.C. know I’ll help however I can.

So I am surely one of those whose “abhorrent and childish behaviors” have “appalled” Ellmers, as she wrote in an ill-conceived response to the blowback on January 30.

In that statement, Ellmers, true to her newly revealed character, turned on GOP leadership:

I remain disappointed that the concern for the language of mandatory reporting of rape to law enforcement held by House Republican women and many men were not addressed before our leadership made the decision to pull the bill from the House floor in the eleventh hour.

While I have nothing good to say about the GOP House leadership, we now know Ellmers’ contention isn’t true. As detailed in NRO’s piece, “The quarrel that blew up the GOP abortion bill,” leaders did try to address those concerns – several times.

3c9d43aEllmers’ legislative assistant Kristi Gribble Thompson (pictured right) promised to call me “within in a couple days” when we protested Ellmers’ office 13 days ago, implying there was more to the story. I’m still waiting to hear it.

But Ellmers has since reaffirmed the inexplicable story is the story: She pulled support from the identically worded bill she voted for in 2013 due to a requirement that a mother seeking an abortion past 20 weeks file a police report, as part of the (unnecessary and repugnant) rape/incest exception.

This was to protect that mother and other girls and women from sexual perpetrators by locking them up, and it was to preclude an obvious loophole which would otherwise enable abortionists to check the box every time that their patients were rape victims without having to provide any evidence.

Furthermore, there is something off in a scenario where a rape victim would seek an abortion only after 20 weeks. Rep. Ellmers should want to know what is wrong with that picture. Is this a child who didn’t realize she was pregnant? Is this the victim of sex trafficking?

In her January 30 statement, Ellmers waxed on about “empower[ing] women with courage to face this crisis.” How does not reporting the crime do that?

Speaking of courage, Ellmers had been hiding from everyone until yesterday, when she attempted to defend herself to a group of pro-life students who dropped by her office.

But even that was accidental. I’m told by a rep from Students for Life of America that Ellmers actually thought she was walking up on a photo op and then got stuck.

unnamed

unnamed (2)

In her nonapology letter, Ellmers concluded, “It’s unimaginable to me why some outside parties would seek to target strong, pro-life conservative women and men who are serving in Congress.”

Who are they, Congresswoman Ellmers? It is unimaginable to me that you might consider yourself part of that crowd.

  • At Suzy B, SBA List president Marjorie Dannenfelser compares two female leaders – Rep. Renee Ellmers and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina – and how they responded to the life issue recently. One showed courage and one had what some are calling “the worst week in Washington.”
  • Saynsumthn’s Blog addresses the hypocrisy of Planned Parenthood’s so-called prenatal care. Apparently, the extent of this care is some healthy eating advice and possibly a midwife referral. Note that if you want your child, PP will call it a “baby,” but if you don’t, the baby will be referred to as “uterine contents.”

  • Wesley J. Smith discusses two elderly Scottish cousins who received assisted suicide in a Swiss clinic because they feared having to live apart. Smith points out that, thanks to Brittany Maynard, suicide is now the “in” thing.
  • Reflections of a Paralytic posts a powerful piece by a woman forced to watch her mother die of starvation and dehydration after losing a battle with other family members. She maintains that her mother did feel pain despite being given morphine:

There is a difference between a dying person who can no longer contain nutrition or hydration and a severely brain damaged/disabled person who cannot feed himself. There is a difference between allowing nature to take its course and actively starving a person to death.

  • In a follow-up to an an earlier post about handcuff mailers, Eric Scheidler of the Pro-Life Action League describes a phone conversation he had with one angry abortionist. After their conversation, he sent her a second handwritten note along with a package of diapers:

Dear Anise,Enclosed is the package of diapers I promised to send you when we spoke on the phone earlier this week.

I’m grateful that you took the trouble to call and talk to me for ten minutes about the issue of abortion and your part in it. What stands out to me most from our conversation is your calling this is a “cruel, ugly world.” You used that phrase at least twice, once in reference to the children you say you’re sparing from it.

I agree that there is much cruelty in the world, and much ugliness. But from my perspective, abortion only makes the world crueler and uglier. Abortion itself is ugly; few can bear to look at the images of what abortion does to its unborn victims. And it’s cruel to the child, whose life is ended only weeks after it has begun.image003

But abortion is also cruel to women. It’s a cruel society that says to a woman, “To be free you must participate in the killing of your own child.”

I know that many women face a desperate situation when they turn to abortion. But I haven’t given up hope that we can make this world kinder and beautiful world by offering women something better than abortion, which too often leaves them trapped in the ugliness and cruelty you lament.

I hope you can put these 32 newborn diapers to use. But I also hope you will reflect on all those children — especially the next 32 scheduled to be aborted at Summit — who won’t live to have their diapers changed by someone who cares for them.

    Yours for Life,
    Eric Scheidler

    P. S. If you ever want to talk again, you’ve got my number.
