Nurse II
The fellow who created the short film Nurse, which we discussed on this blog last week, has just launched his own blog, and his second post featured us featuring him.
Richard Befan did not answer the foremost question about the film: Was it pro-life, or was it pro-abortion? He said his position was in front of our eyes….
The unavoidable controversy that my short film Nurse causes everytime someone points it out, began a new chapter last week, when conservative “pro-lifer” Jill Stanek posted the video on her website. The showing of the film provoked a long chain of reactions, which is still growing and has already surpassed the 100 comments. I would like to thank Jill for posting my short on her popular site, and of course all those who are participating in such an interesting debate. I won’t give my view on the subject, though. It’s in the film itself :-)
On behalf of us all, you’re welcome, Richard. Welcome to the blogosphere.

I just asked my husband what he thought of the video. He concluded that the director is pro-life.I agree, but I asked him why he thought so.He said he feels it’s pro-life because of the way the staff treated her.(Perhaps this was the director expressing his true feelings though)Perhaps not.Though I would never condone this behavior from a nurse, it’s just a movie. It really make for a great debate though!
I’d say he’s probably prolife, considering the ending.
KUDOS! Richard, more movies please!
hi Jill,
stayed away from this on purpose – I live in rather a remote area and only one doctor did abortions … he was a bit of a psycho who had been known to gather all the baby parts into a plastic bag … when he visited the girl (abortions are done only in one hospital here) he would throw the bag at the girl and say, “Here’s your baby!”
Besides that I’ve known of people treated very poorly by ‘normal’ nurses. One was harassed constantly until she died. [I am not very even when standard nurses are portrayed]
John, are you serious about that doctor?
John,can you elaborate?I’m curious.
Oh yeah,
the guy was infamous but got away with stuff because there were only two surgeons at that hospital, then … even heard about the time he removed all organs he thought superfluous and then charged the patient for each organ removed.
I think the video portrays how cruel and heartless some prolife individuals can be. When most women decide to abort it is a very very hard decision for them. They can go through a lot of emotions both before, during and after the abortion. This video just makes me sick, that some prolifers would treat someone like that. I think women go though enough after a decision like that. They don’t need someone telling then they are a “baby killer” or “murderer” But I guess thats just my opinion.
I just thought of another possibility. It could be the woman’s conscience getting the best of her. Maybe she’s dreaming.
When I first watched that film I was absolutely horrified and disgusted that someone could sink so low to advocate such perverse behavior. I considered it the low point of the pro-life movement.
Then I watched the other shorts on that site. Now that I’ve seen them all, I take back my comments. Yes, yes, the film in itself is awful and the character of the nurse needs some serious help, but I don’t think the director was saying he was in favor or against anything and I was hasty to jump to that conclusion.
If you watch the other fimls, you’ll notice that they all sort of have little messages, but they’re so subtle that they can be interpreted in a myriad of different ways. And in that light, it was a very well done film, although I would never suggest watching it without watching the others as well … nor would I suggest watching it within an hours of eating.
Just read through the comments and I want to just emphasize my point with what momof3 said: she thinks it’s the conscience of the woman. Isn’t that what’s so interesting about this film? You could interpret it like that, or you could interpret it as though it really happened. I’m sure you could dream up more ways to interpret it as well.
Interesting …
I would think that thats a sign of good art in a sense. It may be a bit sickening, and after eating it wouldnt be a good idea to watch, but the fact that it has no set interpretation makes it a good piece of work in general. It is left to the viewer to decide what is going on and what they think the message is.
