Sunday funnies
Most political cartoonists this week focused on Wall Street woes.
But here’s one by Gary Varvel that encapsulates what will come to be known as the Wild West “news” reporting of the 2008 presidential campaign – gossip and rumors that careless, lazy, or unscrupulous bloggers post that careless, lazy, or unscrupulous journalists broadcast…

Here’s another one I like, by Chuck Asay. It is not only the presidential campaign that Sarah Palin’s entrance onto the scene is impacting…

… which has contributed to this (by Lisa Benson)…

Finally, here’s another one by Chuck Asay I like. If Barack Obama does lose, I think pointed to as one of the great failings of his campaign will be his “John McCain will give us 4 more years of Bush” montra everyone on the other side has been spouting for months until everyone, including them, I think, is sick of it.
But it just hasn’t stuck. MSM spent too much time for years gleefully portraying McCain as a Republican-bucking maverick…

And as long as I’ve gone completely off-topic this morning, I might as well conclude with steering you to this sobering column by Pat Buchanan, “The party’s over.”

Be Still my Heart…could Pat Buchanan be talking about *GASP*, PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!?!?!?!
It’ll never catch on…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8H1bg65TaM
A true conservative cherishes prudence and believes in fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets
Right on, Pat. He’s been a good commentator for a long time, like him or not.
We are indeed in decline, until the financial excesses get worked out. This means that for most Americans, their standard of living will go down.
It’s also rarely as bad or as good as it looks….
Yes, and rampant selfishness and me-ism has been ultimatley expressed in legalized abortion.
We absolutely deserve this as a nation and unless we change our hearts and our ways, it will get much, much worse that this.
There is a God in heaven and He is not mocked.
HisMan, I understand that you feel that way, but there are always people saying we’re going to Hell in a handbasket because of this or that.
Meanwhile, there are easily identifiable economic trends which last for years, trends which may not be easily predictable as to start time, but once underway they tend to continue for a substantial time.
Buchanan may be right – this may be analogous to 1929. We often hear “but it’s different this time,” i.e. no real crash/depression will occur.
Well, nobody really knows. Heck, it’s always different, and the best we can do is to try and figure out in what ways it’s different.
After the big run-up from 1982 to 2000 or 2007, we’re due for 15 or 18 years of relatively “bad” economic times, in a familiar cycle.
If the pendulum has really swung all the way over, then we ought to be starting back to the other side soon, perhaps ending up somewhat like where we did in the 1930′s – debt was considered anathema, etc.
There are less and less people left alive all the time who were old enough in the Depression to remember how it was…
I don’t know if we’re truly “at the end of our rope” as far as fiscal stimulus, leaning on foreign nations to buy our debt, being somewhat of the world’s “market of last resort” (that’s certainly less of a factor than it used to be),
It will be different this time. We may be living in a cardboard box on the side of the road, but we will still have our iphones.
It will be different this time. We may be living in a cardboard box on the side of the road, but we will still have our iphones.
LOL…and instead of begging for money for alcohol, we’ll be holding signs that say “Will Work for Double Tall DeCaf Cinnamon Dolce Latte with Sugar-Free Syrup”
At the risk of saying something about the main topic of this thread (the cartoons), I love the one of the donkey with his ears on fire…. how better to describe the absolute “Palin hysteria”?
Jill:
You are a great American! Would you like a Link Exchange with my blog COMMON CENTS where we blog about the issues of the day…

Hey Doyle, I’m going back off topic!
Here is a beautiful ad from CatholicVote
http://youtube.com/watch?v=61wj4tJICcc
Steve: Great blog, I love it!
Deel: Join the crowd, I think I’m the only “on topic” poster today…. I’m swimming against the flow!
Doyle,
Ahh, but think of how much stronger you will be for it! ; ))
Deel,
excellent video, there is a certain deacon i would like to send that to!
DeeL,
That is an excellent video. Thank you for posting it. Does anyone recognize the music? It goes perfectly with the message.
becky,
There are many people I’d like to send it to!
How about, yet again, Saturday night funnies? This time from the Alexandra Show, not SNL. But it’s kind of on-topic because it’s funny on a Sunday — though it wasn’t so funny at the time it happened.
I work in theater, and I got stuck working on a last-minute project last night, with only about an hour to build it before the show began. I set up a little workstation in the boiler room below the stage and worked feverishly, managing to actually create a reasonable-looking prop entirely out of foam core and a variety of colors of gaff tape.
Just as I was putting the finishing touches on it, I felt that annoying tickle that you get when a strand of hair falls on you. It was on my foot, and I willed myself to ignore it. I didn’t have time to go freaking myself out about strands of hair; the audience was already being seated and I hadn’t yet finished.
Suddenly there was way more than one “strand of hair,” and they were all running up my calves and over my knees. I glanced down and saw several GIGANTIC roaches swarming all over my feet. They must have been three inches long!
So of course I shrieked and ran out of the boiler room and into the green room, where I found the wardrobe person. I explained what was going on as I frantically kicked my pants off. Roaches scurried away in all directions, but some hid in my pants until we got the courage to shake them out.
Unfortunately, the cast of my show doesn’t speak English, so they didn’t understand any of our pleas to give us a moment of privacy — all they heard was frantic panic-sounding speech, so they all came running out of the dressing rooms to see what was going on. They brought the artistic directors with them, too. And there I was, pants-free for all to see.
The wardrobe girl found a swatch of cloth for me to wrap around myself until I could get my pants back on, and I tried my best to explain to everyone why I’d been running around, shrieking, in my underwear. But again, because of the language barrier, I only succeeded in making them think I was even crazier, as I tried to mime and gesture the story of what had happened. You try to pantomime a roach attack, and see how well you do. It was like a game of charades where you can’t even acknowledge correct guesses.
On the bright side, they’re all being very nice to me today, and giving me space. And no one’s asked me to do any last-minute projects yet. So I might be onto something.
Ewwww! Alexandra that’s a hysterical story! I can’t wait to share it with my daughter who is studying music and theatre in college. I will remind her to stay out of the boiler rooms.
Janet,
I don’t know what the music is, but in a lot of ways it reminds me of the music from “The Passion of the Christ”. It is hauntingly beautiful and the editor did a stunning job of matching up the images. I’m glad it moved you. I am sending it to everyone I know!
I’d rather set my hair on fire than see McCain/Palin in office. Of course, I like my hair too much, so I’d actually probably end up studying abroad and forgetting to come back; it’d be excellent.
On the first cartoon, though, none of those look like reporters. As a reporter, I can say we’re a pretty distinctive lot; those look like bloggers to me.
Oh Alexandra! EWWWW!!! That would give me nightmares!
Alexandra,
UGH!!! I have the willies just reading about it!
Alexandra,
I would have died with cockroaches around! I don’t know if the non-English-speaking people around you were Hispanic….but if they were, you should have yelled “cucaracha! (Like the mexican song.) I bet they would have laughed.
Alexandra, here’s a weatherman who meets up with a cockroach ….hilarious.

Ahahaha Dough that was awesome. I like to think that aside from the initial shriek I kept my cool a bit better than that guy. I mean except for the part where I took my pants off.
I love how everyone is freaking out about the roach when I was about a billion times more horrified at being caught in my underwear by ten male co-workers/bosses! I was torn at the time between not wanting to put the pants back on, and wanting to put them back on as soon as possible. Such conflicting desires.
Janet, unfortunately they don’t speak Spanish; they don’t even use the roman alphabet. I probably should have sung that song anyway, because it might have bridged the translation gap! Or else it would have made me look even crazier…
The worst part of it was that I had to go back and finish working anyway. I found the disintegrating pipe the roaches were all living in — right behind where I was working — so I made the wardrobe girl come with me and hold a flashlight on it, keeping a lookout until I was done. Turning my back on that pipe and going back to work was just about one of the hardest things I’ve done recently, though.
Alexandra,
)
Ahahaha Dough that was awesome.
I love your new name for Doug!
I didn’t even think about the part without the pants.Lol.
I just re-read my last comment, it sounds kind of weird if taken out of context.
Human Abstract: McCain and Palin WILL be elected, so stock up on hair products, get yourself a one way ticket to the country of your choice and go for it.
Planes are leaving every hour.
Buh-Bye !
Mike,
Don’t get your hopes up to much, bro…These liberal pro-abort folks are all talk…
Reminds me of the time when Bush won and so many of these “people” were quoted on national TV as saying that the US is no longer “tolerant” and they would be moving out to Canada…
But…gues what, they’re STILL here..
Janet, I think you’re thinking of Jon Dough.
Reminds me of the time when Bush won and so many of these “people” were quoted on national TV as saying that the US is no longer “tolerant” and they would be moving out to Canada.
RSD, heck – that ain’t nuttin.’ I’ve heard people say that unless things changed, that “God was going to call them home.” Have to laugh – how’d that work out?
Actually, I’ll finish up my final year of school, study abroad, and forget to come home. : ) I highly doubt McSame and Bimbo will win, however. She charged women for rape kits and tried to ban books. She’s infrikkinsane. And he’s got NO appeal at all, except to people as old, or as hidebound, as he is.
I’m not married to Jane, though.
I’m also not married to Janet.
Actually, I’ll finish up my final year of school, study abroad, and forget to come home. : )
Promises, promises. All the libs say they’re going to leave but they never actually do. Be gone already! And don’t forget to take Alec Baldwin and the rest of Hollywood with you. Might I suggest Cuba or North Korea?
Jon: I’m also not married to Janet
Janet seems lovely. I think that anyone who is married to her is very lucky.
Silly DeeL, I’d be trying to get away from a totalitarian regime if McCain was elected.
Silly DeeL, I’d be trying to get away from a totalitarian regime if McCain was elected.
Uh huh. There will be all sorts of freedom should the Dems completely take over and tax us into total servitude to the state. Whatever. Yawn.
The point is stop teasing us. When McCain wins, please just pack up and go. It doesn’t really matter where, just please leave from here.
Somehow this all began with a story about cockroaches.
)
DeeL, Thanks for the compliment, I’ll remind my husband.
Jon, He will be happy to hear that!
Very true, Janet!–you may be lovely, but I definitely don’t want to pick a fight with your husband! There is a good reason that lovely women often have powerful husbands!
