Quote of the Day 7-25-10
On July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI issued the encyclical letter Humanae Vitae, which means, “Of Human Life.” In that relatively short document… he outlines the Church’s vision of human life, marriage, and the
connection between human love and the creative action of God.
Love and life are 2 very simple and very similar words, and they represent 2 gifts that go together. Love leads to life; it does not close it off. Love welcomes life, it is not afraid of it.
Love and life go together because ultimately, they are simply 2
aspects of the one God.
One of the best ways you can observe this anniversary of Humanae Vitae is to read it…. At priestsforlife.org… you will find the text along with helpful commentary.
~ Fr. Frank Pavone’s blog, July 23

Read that long ago, awesome! The next thing everyone should read is “Theology or the Body” and “Love and Responsibility” by John Paul II. Really eye-opening, but practical at the same time.
Humanae Vitae was prophetic. Pope Paul VI saw what was coming while it was still far down the road. Yes, the whole world needs to read this encyclical.
Paul VI even faced withering criticism from many within the church. We now know the effects of our sexual revolution, and Humanae Vitae was truly a prophetic document. We cannot separate the unitive and procreative aspects of our human sexuality without consequence.
I’ve read Love and Responsibility and have studied TOB for several years now. I am excited to be teaching teen TOB program this fall.
The tide is turning. . . .
Praxedes,
That’s wonderful news!
I find it beyond ironic to take life and death morality lesions from a group of “Christians” who supported the Nazi genocide of the Jews and has a former member of the Hitler Youth as its current leader… or Sexual morality lectures from a group of “Christians” who have raped and vilified blind children and protected guilty pedophiles for decades. All to preserve the ever diminishing power of the church…
Biggz,
You only show how little you know about history and the Church. Perhaps you don’t care to learn, but for those who do….
NO ONE claims that the behavior of Hitler and his followers was Christian behavior. Pope Benedict (Karl Ratzinger then) was a teenager in Germany and he quickly left the Hitler youth because of its ideology. He has published countless books and is one of the most learned men in the world – Pope Benedict is a true gem – a saint on earth.
The sexual abuse scandal was complicated and very poorly handled, but if you check online you will find much about reforms – the Dioceses of the USA have established very strict standards to avoid a similar scandal from ever happening in the future…
If you have not read Humanae Vitae, click on the link, it’s very short.
As for the Church’s power – it is not the goal of the Church to have power on earth. We Christians are “the Church” and our goal is to lead all to heaven, and give glory to God. The West is suffering from a major increase in secularism, but other areas of the world are experience HUGE increases in Catholics. Africa is one such area. Perhaps this is one reason the special interest groups, including the U.S. government are so intent on controlling the population there.
Janet – I am German. The Nazi’s were Christians. Hitler was a Christian. One of the ways Hitler incited the German population against the Jews and justified their murder was by having the play “The passion of the Christ” shown all over Germany.
Ratzinger is the very man who covered up the sex scandals and wrote the instructions for how other such incidents should be handled quietly and the priest moved to another country. He even wrote in there how these scandals could hurt the church’s influence.
I know my history… My family lived it.

Hitler promoted a play. (He was crazy, so what is your point?)
“Ratzinger is the very man who covered up the sex scandals and wrote the instructions for how other such incidents should be handled quietly and the priest moved to another country. ”
i’m sorry, I’m aware of the more recent scandals unearthed in Europe, but I don’t know details. I am sure that there was no evil intent on the part of Karl Ratzinger. It seems to me that the reporting several months ago was a bit biased (not hard to believe) against the Pope.
“He even wrote in there how these scandals could hurt the church’s influence.”
Citation?
I don’t see a problem with Ratzinger making a statement of fact.
“I know my history… My family lived it. ”
I’m very sorry if by that you mean that you had a member of your family harmed by the Holocaust or by the priest scandal in Germany. I will pray for the victims of sexual abuse around the world.
Forgive me – The current Pope’s first name is Joseph Ratzinger (not Karl) – I must have had Karol Wojtyla, (Pope JPII) on my mind…
Having seen passion plays and films many times, & having a basic understanding of scripture,& being christian… how exactly does the repeated viewing of passion plays or films incite hatred and violence of supposed Christians toward Jews? Did German folks miss the whole point that Christ was NOT dying because some evil Jews tricked and crucified poor little him, but that he was intentionally sacrificing himself (lovingly) for a whole earth full of sinners of ALL nations. So I am confused as to how these “NAZI Christians” derived that Jews were the only guilty ones, and worthy of being destroyed. Especially, since Jesus himself begged God from the cross for their/our forgiveness.
I suppose there were no Margaret Sanger ties to Nazis whatsoever?
The modern anti-life movement sounds like a case of “same mindset/different method”, only now they are more equally deadly.
mama3 – Do you not watch the news? When the unapologetic hate monger Mel Gibson produced the most ridiculous movie of his career, the Jews of this country went insane for this very reason. It was a propaganda tool in the 1930’s and it still is today.
How was Margret tied to Nazi’s??? So, let’s be clear here the Nazi’s were a white Christian army out to establish Christian rule over the rest of the world. Sounds like the anti-choice mindset to me…
“How was Margret tied to Nazi’s??? ”
