Lunch Break: No pay, no spray?
To give us a break from the daily grind…
Since the original Lunch Break was so popular, here’s what I consider the best of round 2 for “Firefighters Let the House Burn”. Two legals debate the issue.

I think people are forgetting that this home was not in a city. It was out in a rural area which had NO fire department. When these folks purchased their home or moved there they knew this. The closest town that did have a fire department offered the county residents fire protection for a fee. If they don’t pay the fee, then they don’t respond. Known fact! No persons were in there, and animals don’t count, sorry, they don’t. Choices have consequences, and this homeowner chose not to pay and his consequence was a pile of rubble.
I heard about this on the radio. From what I understand – The man’s son’s home caught fire previously, he had not paid the $75 and the fire dept put his fire out. This man had the mind set that he should get something for nothing, as his son did. I guess the fire chief drew the line. Having said that, it must have been painful for the fire fighters to stand and watch this happen, they were under direct orders not to attack the fire. I think they should have put the fire out, and sued the old man for every penny’s worth or resources it took to do that.
Prior to the establish of Philadelphia’s Union Fire Company by Benjamin Franklin, fire units served only those who SUBSCRIBED.
Franklin’s unit was formed of volunteers for “THE COMMON GOOD” and it survives today as Philadelphia’s Engine 8. It outlasted ALL of the subscription companies.
Now, Glenn Beck says the fire unit was correct. If they had put out the fire, Beck says, that would be “Obamacare.” Beck is wrong. I call it a matter of good conscience.
“A good conscience,” Franklin said, “is a continual Christmas.”
Now, regina, if you want to play by your rules, pin an envelope to your lapel that says “OPEN ONLY IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and put $1,000 cash in it. If you don’t, and it’s necessary to extract you from a vehicle collision in my neck of the woods, you’re on your own.
I’ll play by your rules, but my conscience wouldn’t be clear.
Justsnapd8’s solution is the best one. Although everyone won’t pay for services rendered, I’m confident that enough would.
Unlike Glenn Beck, I don’t believe that everyone who didn’t, or can’t afford to pay, is a freeloader.
They may just be poor. There’s no sin in that. Or is there?
Ask yourself what Jesus would do if he was wearing a helmet.
It was a doublewide manufactured home. You can tell by the two metal frames in the photos.
By the time the ‘volunteer fire department’ arrived on scene there would have been nothing worth saving.
By letting it burn to the ground, the firement actually saved the homeowners/insurer the expense and effort of removing the mess.
Now all they have to deal with is a the metal from the two frames which can easily be cut into manageble lengths, hauled away and sold for scrap.
The fire chief made the right call and now he is using the free publicity to motivate other delequent folks reconcider their decision not to pay the ‘fee’.
The homeowners and/or their insurer may sue, but I doubt they will prevail. The best they can hope for is the insurance company for the fire department will reach an economic based decision that it is less costly to settle than to litigate.
I lived in a rural unicorporated area that was served by a volunteer fire department.
My neighbor had a chimmney fire which quickly spread to the cedar shingled roof and by the time the volunteer fire department arrived on scene all that was left was the log walls.
They put a spray on the propane tank to keep it cool and recommended to the homeowner that he allow the fire to finish it’s work in order to make it safer and easier to clean up afterwards.
The home would have been a total loss even if they saved some of the log walls.
When the fire died out all that was left of a 4ksqft home was a small heap of ashes.
My neighbor used the insurance payment to rebuild on the same spot.
No cedar shingles and no wood stove.
A smaller, safer and more efficient home with no mortage.

Here is Keep Blowingharderman contorting himself into an almost conservative position in order to associate Tea Party folks with a fire chief who refused to respond to a fire call because the homeowner, Gene Cranick, who lived in an incorporated area out side the South Fulton, Tennessee city fire departments zone of coverage, had not payed an annual $75.00 fee required by law in order to be eligible to receive the services of the city fire department.
[Apparently it escapes Blowhardermans omniscience that this is just another failure of government to effectively respond to continuoulsy changing realities. This what I like to call ‘idiotocracy’ run amok.]
Blowharderman ridicules how absurd it is to be required to pay a fee in addition to a tax. [Welcome to the b o hellthscare program.]
Blowharderman must be so insulated from reality that he does not actually know how many fees HE already pays in addition to taxes.
[Taxes and fees are the offerrings and sacrifices liberals require others to make/pay on their behalf to their humanistic ‘god’; Government.]
Blowharderman is such an overtly opportunistic pimp who has and will use any circumstance or anyone in a selfserving attempt to further his own career and liberal humanistic agenda.
Neither Gene Cranick nor his son Todd seemed to be aware they were being used by a pompous hypocrite who would not walk across the street to pee on them if they were on fire unless Blowharderman thought it would benefit him.
Blowhardermann did seem to be genuinely greived that the Cranick pets were consumed in the conflagration. [Brough back memories of Ben Afleck’s merciless and accurate parody of Blowharderman on SNL, circa 2008]
