This is one of many examples showing that society has always been “bi-sexist” rather than “patriarchal.” “Plead for the widow.” There has always been a greater concern for females in dire situation than for similarly situated males.
Denise, it helps to keep in mind some cultural context. In a family back then, the economic support was the husband/father. The wife and children were at home. If he died, the family was often doomed to poverty. That wasn’t the case if the wife passed on. Also I believe that men did die earlier.

(Denise) This substantiates my point. Men had a special responsibility or burden of support. If men die earlier than women, it may be due to the special burdens placed on men.
