I love Ellen!
A couple years ago I dressed up as Carmen Sandiego. I even had a little prop Mona Lisa that I had “stolen.” My fans were few and far between, but fiercely loyal. Kids who grew up obsessively playing almanac-based video games stick together.
As a child, I guess my best costume was probably a clown costume. My middle school had “best costume” contests and I had not yet gotten the memo that it was INCREDIBLY UNCOOL to wear actual costumes to school for this. Everyone was either a bum or a hippie, things that were basically a grunged-up version of your regular cool-kid clothes, and (not having had any cool clothes anyway – I wore mostly hand-me-downs, mostly from the 70s and 80s, until I was old enough to buy my own clothes – although in retrospect some of those 70s clothes were AWESOME) I was a clown, but like hardcore clown. I had a big hoop in the stomach of the costume and everything, red puffy nose, hat, the whole nine yards – so I was this (4’10″, 65-lb) big fat-stomached clown in this brightly colored outfit waddling down the hallways. Also I had HUGE round glasses at the time. People made fun of me and I refused to turn Sad Clown so I, no stranger to unpopularity at that point (obviously – in case the hand-me-downs and big glasses weren’t clue enough) soldiered on – nay, clowned on – and stayed smiley and upbeat all day. Somehow a picture of me smiling REALLY BIG – defiantly big – for the camera, glasses enormous and pigtail-braids long, hoop-stomach protruding, made it into the yearbook. Like, 1/2-page size picture. I didn’t even remember posing for it, but there it was all those months later when the yearbooks came out, staring me in the face. I think the yearbook committee meant to embarrass me but to this day I think it’s one of the best, awesomest, geekiest pictures ever! So I fondly remember that clown costume and my one-girl stand against Boringly Cool Costumes.
In fourth grade my Girl Scout troop marched in the town’s Halloween Parade, which was a super-big deal. Every organization in the parade would build a float and it was very serious business; we worked on our float for what felt like weeks but was probably just days. It was a moon, surrounded by clouds, and it had writing on it that said something cheesy like, “Aim for the moon! Even if you miss, you’ll end up among the stars!” We all dressed as stars and either rode on the float or walked alongside it. The star costumes were surprisingly awesome, given that they were basically foamcore, paint, and sweatsuits. We all just wore black sweatpants and shirts, and we cut big stars out of the foamcore and then we each painted our stars however we wanted. The stars had a cut-out in the center for your face to stick through. So we were all unable to turn our heads and had to rely on peripheral vision for everything and kept bumping into each other the whole time we were marching (really more like drifting) down Main Street. It was awesome. Also I remember feeling that I had done a very good job painting my star. I didn’t want any of the colors to feel left-out so I made each of the five legs of the star a different color and “blended” them into each other a their edges. I’m sure it was even more beautiful than its description suggests, because undoubtedly a 9-year old girl using every single color of paint and “blending” them together could not turn into anything but a work of art. I was so very proud once it was all finished and dry, and I held my head high (if immobile) as I and all the unloved colors marched down Main Street together, but for some reason my mother seemed a bit skeptical…
My favorite was the year (middle school, i think) I found my mom’s old jester costume–just a multi-color vest with bells, really. But I made a hat with bells to match, put bells on my shoes, and carried some kind of stick-thing with more bells on it. I think it worked well–My neighbors kept saying “trick” when I showed up, and I had to dance around before they would give me candy!

Today I was “Cousin It” at our work costume contest/parade. There were so many contestants this year from 9 states we needed to wait a day to see who the top 5 winners will be.
So she gave each child “her book”! Lovely! Given her lifestyle, I would definitely find that to be scary and would definitely throw that out along with all the “suspect” candy.

Does the “suspect” candy contain drugs, carcinogens or secret ‘make you gay’ brew?
Sometimes I was a witch, but my favorite was my gypsy costume, for which I wore ALL of my Mom’s costume jewelry at once. She had some great antique-looking pieces from her own mother. I had about a dozen heavy gold chains around my neck, bracelets and rings and big hoop earrings in my ears and the garish makeup and bright red lipstick — such fun!
I guess I thought I was glamorous.
I really miss trick-or-treating. . .
i dont like ellen. she can be very funny at times but when she copped an attitude over lady gaga and the meat dress i was like….oh puuuuuleaze! ellen was almost in tears. you know they can abort a dog too. i would bet ellen would have a fit about that….but not kids. shes irritating anymore. heck even liberal cher found that dress funny. i think its hanging at our rock and roll hall of fame.
the fact that ellen is gay is none of my business but i wish shed stop talking about it all the time. i dont run around telling everyone “im straight im straight im straight”!!!!!! why does it always have to matter to her? why does she think it matters to us? just be a good comic and keep your sexual orientation out of it.
it would be like conan always reminding his audience “im married” “!m a heterosexual married to a woman.” “to a woman mind you.” who cares? i also didnt care to hear letterman talk about all of the women he slept with at nbc. …..and you told us why???????
Heather, Letterman “told us” about all the women he slept with because he was being extorted with that information. Going public takes the power away from the blackmailer, and Letterman had passed the situation on to the Manhattan DA at that point. I think it was a courageous thing to do, given that he probably had enough money to just pay the guy off and shut him up periodically for as long as the guy kept at it – but he wanted that person to be punished, and so he publicly admitted to some indiscretions that he would rather have kept private.
It is actually very sad, how evasive Letterman has had to become as a result of some sick people in this world. Security and backstage protocol at the Letterman recording studio are miles beyond what they are at similar studios with other morning or late-night TV show hosts. At first you want to be like, what an egotistical jerk, who does he think he is; but between the extortion and the kidnapping plot on his child, you really can’t blame him for wanting to almost literally wall everyone out.
As far as Ellen, I don’t watch her show frequently but I have never heard her bring up the subject of her sexuality on it. I haven’t really heard her talk about it much at all, unless she’s asked in an interview. She certainly doesn’t hide it, but it being “none of your business” doesn’t mean that she has a duty to keep you from ever seeing it.
yes alexandrea i do know he was being extorted but maybe he should have kept it in his pants. also i remember before ellen had her talk show she had her own comedy show. i used to lmao! but in the second season she made a few comments about being gay. they pulled the show. i remember her talking a few times on her talk show about being married to portia and they are now on a mag. cover together. she also speaks out about gay bullying. why not just bullying in general? why gay?
Well, Heather, “maybe he should have kept it in his pants” is a LOT different from “and you told me this…why?” Those are two entirely separate complaints. One is an indiscretion and one is, in my opinion, a brave way of dealing with one’s indiscretions.
As for Ellen being on a magazine cover – I am pretty sure that heterosexual married couples do this all the time, so that seems like weak evidence for your assertion that she is “talking about it all the time” when straight people don’t go running around screaming, “I’m straight! I’m straight!” And I’m pretty sure that, for example, Conan talks occasionally about being married, on his TV show. You accused her of talking about her sexuality above and beyond what straight people do, but your examples are things that straight people do so often you just don’t realize it.
As for bullying – people tend to speak out about the things they have personal experience with. A friend of mine focuses her activism on social problems in Madagascar. Why Madagascar? Why not all impoverished countries? Because the world is big and people are small and she knows Madagascar, having lived and worked there. A co-worker advocates on behalf of entertainment-industry employees who have no health insurance. Lots of people have no health insurance – why focus on this industry? Because he knows this industry. He knows the unique challenges of it, the circumstances of it, the problems that come with it.
yeah i get what youre sayin. im not trying to fight. being bullied is awful. i was a victim and it hurts. we had 3 suicides at mentor high school. one girl was from another country. she had an odd name like sligina so a group of girls called her slutgina every day and told her to “go back to your country.” she hung herself and the sister said that one of the girls showed up at the wake and remarked ” i just wanted to make sure she actually did it.”!!!!!!i! the other boy was told “why dont you just go kill yourself. its not like anyone would miss you anyway.” he shot himself. ..~poor souls. i dont condone anyone being bullied.
mentor took so much heat i believe they now have a zero tolerance policy. we had 2 suicides due to people being bullied back when i went to high school. i just assume its only going to get worse with society the way it is. we kill our own children. how do we expect any respect when kids arent being raised with morals?

Edward, it’s hard to find entertaining, up-to-the-minute Halloween videos and Ellen’s show does a great job showing the latest Halloween trends for kids. Posting the two videos (Friday and Monday) does not mean I support her lifestyle or religious beliefs. LL

i was just saying that the woman is annoying to me. i know shes popular but so was oprah. i just dont care for either one of them. when ellen comes on i turn her off. she also promoted obama which turned me off. and thats all.
Reality, when I spoke of “suspect candy”, I really didn’t mean the candy that De Generes was handing out specifically. How many of us, when our little ones came back from “trick-or-treating”, went through their bags and disposed of unwrapped and/or unidentifiable items, knowing they could be laced? Well, we can pretty much suspect that her book is peppered with the portrayal of the gay lifestyle as “ok”.
Mr Rice, I agree with you 100%. Her inclusion on this Christian-oriented site can only serve to anesthesize the readers to the dangers that her perverted lifestyle poses. That’s one reason why we object to prominent pro-abortion persons being held up for honor – such as Obama at Notre Dame two years ago. We’re not so cravenly desperate for entertainment that we should suspend our vigilance in this respect.
