This looks like a comedy routine/session from this woman, not a serious talk. I think the object of it was to make people laugh.

Interesting that a co worker of mine admitted that if he wasn’t such a socialist, he would send his children to private schools? Oh really? You aren’t suggesting that unions, which he supports, don’t improve education and conditions for teachers, are you?

The other dopey comment she made was saying that the Secretary of Education wouldn’t have a lisp if he’d gone to a public school. Well, maybe she’d have better manners if she’d gone to private school.
Oh! And as the mother of a big kid with a lisp, I’m also deeply offended.

This woman lacks everything Jill says, and then some, like maturity. For any adult to announce publicly that a common activity in his or her college career was smoking pot is just stupid and wrong. But when you’re an adult who is a professional educator?? That not only ramps up how dumb and irresponsible that admission is, but it’s also completely against what your goal should be, ie, helping to raise decent, responsible young citizens.
I wonder what children were present? As a parent, if my child were witness to this “talk”, I would be livid.

Harvard is hard to get in. It is not hard to stay.
Very true. It is a club, even a brotherhood. They protect their own. They hire their own. They promote their own.
Harvard has a 97% graduation rate.
Kansas State has a 27% graduation rate.
Oh, look, Obama picked his Harvard/Chicago frat brother for Ed Secretary. And he is just the latest official to demand teachers make all kids above average.
Well, the fact is she makes some good points. Yes, she is crass. I would say look at the context of the comments. Note, she says she taught at selective admissions schools. That means that they made sure the only kids sitting in her classes were smart and well behaved. She didn’t have to worry about ‘accountability’ because it was pretty much a sure thing that those students would do well. Yet, she still relates to those teachers who have to teach all the kids who aren’t in select admissions schools.
She was at the expensive school, Dartmouth, and I doubt she was the only one smoking. Plenty of those rich kids were, too. What was their excuse? I would wager she was corrupted by them. A pretty sad testament of those who should have done better raising their kids.
I agree with her mostly, despite her crudeness. It is easy to feel exasperated when you work to help kids and all you get is blamed for the fact that you can’t create a Lake Woebegone where all the children are above average.
