  1. I hate to be the horrible meanie that agrees with Simon Cowell, but he’s right.  Charlotte’s voice is nasal on the long notes, she keeps going flat, and just sounds thin overall next to Jonathan’s…well, quite frankly, his powerhouse of a voice.  My guess is she was struggling to reach as high as she did and that she is perhaps closer to a contralto than a true soprano in terms of range.  But it’s also likely that splitting them up would cut Jonathan’s confidence down.  So my thought would be to pick songs that are more comfortably within her range for performances, and don’t put the two of them in unison as often, to hide tuning difficulties.  It just killed me to hear her going flat like that in the song, because there was so much emotion in there that to hear technique getting in the way is just…gah.

  2. Same here, Alice. Every flat fall was killing me. I wish I could gift her my Truman Capote of a voice coach from my college days. He was weird, but he really helped! :P

Simon comes off as such a jerk, but if the rest of the world realized what he did for authentically talented vocalists who otherwise would NEVER get any sort of notoriety because they aren’t the brightly-packaged waifs, they’d love him just as much as I do.

Absolutely bawling right now, and it makes me wish I would’ve made a legitimate run for a singing career when I was young instead of getting discouraged by my looks.

How could you get discouraged by your looks?

  4. Jill, Please respond to Dan D’s post on Mitt Romney. I’m sure this talent show thing is more important than facts about Romney, but be a dear and actually respond. Thank-You! Dan D’s post is below…
Jill, you’re absolutely killing me here. Setting aside the life issue for a second, there are other disqualifying issues besides abortion. You do know that right? Mitt Romney is a cult member. He also singlehandedly instituted homosexual marriage in Massachusetts. On the contrary, Obama claims to be a Christian and also openly opposes gay marriage. Let’s take a look at the whole lesser of two evils approach:
    Candidate AChristian Against gay marriage
    Candidate BCultist Supports gay marriage
Who should I pick Jill? Please answer.
Getting to the abortion issue. Since you think Romney is a convert, can you please answer 2 questions? 1. What month and year did he convert?2. Has he done anything pro-abortion since then?

  5. “Candidate AChristian Against gay marriage”

Wait, who is this referring to? Not Obama, is it?

  6. Bobby, who cares who it represents? If I’m going to vote for the lesser of two evils, which one should I pick?

  7. One who defends the state sanctioned killing of a million humans per year vs. one who (supposedly) disagrees with you on gay marriage and has a different religion than you do?

If you pick the former, I doubt any reasonable person will be able to convince you differently…

  8. No, it was a real question, Dan. I was really wondering if it is the case that people consider Obama a Christian against gay marriage. I have decided this election that I cannot vote for the lesser of two evils, so I reject the hypothesis that I will vote for the lesser of two evils. I was really wondering about if it was supposed to be Obama because candidate B was pretty clearly Romney. Or maybe it was a third party candidate that I need to be aware of. That is what I was curious about. If it was just a thought experiment, okay, no biggie. I just wanted to know if I was missing something.

  9. Bobby, thank you for not supporting evil. I am with you. Obama says he’s a Christian and he openly opposes gay marriage. So, yes, that’s him. I don’t think he’s a genuine believer, which is as obvious as the fact that Romney is not a genuine pro-lifer.

But of course gullible pro-lifers will believe anything a Re-publican says to get elected and reject anything a Democrat says.

P.S. I’m not even sure Romney is even claiming to be pro-life now. He was the only candidate to not attend any of the pro-life presidential forums.

  10. xalisae, the platform is meaningless because the GOP nominates pro-aborts. John McCain tried to change the GOP abortion platform because it was pro-life.

  11. Really? Then why’d he pick a running-mate like Sarah Palin? Plus, I didn’t even realize John McCain supported legal abortion. Source?

  12. xalisae, therein lies the problem. You don’t know what the positions of the candidates that you support are and you don’t understand politics. He picked Sarah Palin to get more votes. That’s politics 101. If you’re a pro-abort like McCain, choose a pro-lifer to get more votes by being all things to all men.

The number one source on the internet for pro-life credentials is ProlifeProfiles.com.

  13. Drat! I was beaten out for the coveted hat tip by Jill!  :)

I really identify with this kid. I was only a very few pounds lighter and I…well, I wish I had his voice. Did you notice how his hand shook? His smile when the audience reacted?

Paul Potts, Susan Boyle, and now Jonathan Antoine.

I understand the criticism of Charlotte, but it’s almost like concentrating on the Pips. I can see more Bocelli / Dion, Bocelli / Brightman duets being successful. There’s a link to Jonathan singing ” Time To Say Goodbye” very well, despite amateurish audio.

    Can’t wait for the semi-finals.

  14. Yeah. I’m familiar with that website. I don’t buy it. But then again, you’d probably consider me a “pro-abort” by your standards.  I’m not impressed.

So based on that you have two people who support abortion (one with rabid open zeal and one behind the scenes) and two people who support gay marriage. So Obama is the lesser of evils b/c he’s nominally Christian (and I suppose you  believe him to be a ‘true believer’ on that count).  Lesser of two evils my butt. If you believe what you’re writing, they’re the same evil.

On the topic at hand – loved this video.

  16. Obama not only sanctions pro-choice but his healthcare plan gives a great deal of funding to Planned Parenthood, an organiation which in California is trying to get the law changed so that non-doctors can perform abortions.

  17. Everyone criticizing Charlotte needs to go on youtube and search Charlotte and Jonathan and click on the other video they have of them performing in what looks like a church “All I ask of you”. Your view of her will completely change and you’ll realize how great of a singer she truly is. I can’t wait for their second performance where she gets a little more solo time and hearing Simon say “I’m sorry, Charlotte. I was wrong about you”.
