Sidewalk Advocates for Life seeks “to train, equip, and support local communities across the United States and the world in ‘sidewalk advocacy’: to be the hands and feet of Christ, offering loving, life-affirming alternatives to all present at the abortion center, thereby eliminating demand and ending abortion.”

Jill Stanek is a nurse turned speaker, columnist and blogger, a national figure in the effort to protect both preborn and postborn innocent human life.
I sidewalk counsel and we use that very pamphlet. And while I’ve personally heard post-abortive moms say “If only there was someone out there to tell me I didn’t have to do it. To tell me they’d help me. To tell me I had other options…I wouldn’t have aborted…”
Thats all easy to say when you’re past the abortion and feeling the regret but the truth is we do say these things to moms at my local PP and very very few leave with us to go to the CPC to have a free ultrasound. Very few get back in their cars and leave the clinic and choose life. Most spit at us, curse at us, wish us dead etc…
The ones that do choose life are over joyous and so grateful to us for being there. They look at their babies and say “THANK GOD you were there!” and so for those few moms make it all worthwhile to me to be there. But I am saddened to see how hard some women’s hearts are. They’re not all scared. They’re not all looking for an out. They’re not all coerced. I’m not sure what the answer is for the women who say “i know it is a baby but I DON’T CARE.” I still speak words of help to them. But it doesn’t work. So not sure what the solution is but too many babies are dying.
A group that sidewalk counsels at an abortion facility in my city, with the three added today, has counted 480 babies saved through their efforts and the grace of God since August 2010!!!!!!!!
LifeJoy, that is wonderful! What are they doing? What words do they say? I always ask because I am always willing to learn how to be better.
I think I have a hard time reaching out to the moms cause there are “screechers” there who shout horrible things. They aren’t even preaching which I don’t have a problem with. They’re shouting unbiblical hateful things. The only times I have intercepted women going in is when the screechers aren’t there. It is frustrating. But even without the screechers we don’t turn that many away. Most go right on in laughing at us. When they come out though they’re no longer laughing.
I applaud your efforts, Sydney M! They are not in vain! Of all the challenges to face, it’s a shame, quite literally, that some pro-life minded people just don’t understand and undermine your loving work!
I have helped at a PRC and have been wanting to do sidewalk counseling for awhile now, but can’t make the time just yet with my kids. So I pray for the group who does it. Yes, they seem to have a constant supply of save stories! They post updates on facebook (one of the only reasons I stay on fb) – so uplifting to hear the news amid all the other chaos of abortion.
As for specifics, I know they take the you have options, we can help approach, and I am pretty sure there is a resource center or clinic very close by that does free ultrasounds. There is a great story out there about one of the gentlemen who said to a couple as they walked away from his offers to help, “God bless you both … God bless all three of you.” He is now the godfather of that baby. He is the contact person for 40 Days for Life (in Milwaukee) and very helpful and receptive to questions. If you can’t find his email online, you can email me for it. (It is my understanding he is temporarily disallowed from counseling at his usual post. He seems to hurt business.)
