Pro-life video of the day: Preemie saved by weighing mistake
by Hans Johnson
There have been reported cases of surgical scissors left behind with naturally unpleasant consequences. But here’s a case where such an accident had a decidedly good result:

From The Sun story about little Maddalena Douse, December 18, 2012:
When she was born six months ago at just 23 weeks she was so tiny docs did not know if they should try to save her.
But when they put her on the scales she weighed 1lb, the minimum weight for a baby to be considered viable — so they fought for her.
Only when she was safely on a ventilator did medics discover the scissors had been accidentally left on the scales and that 8in Maddalena in fact weighed only 382g (13 oz).

Providential – completely.
Hans,
How precious!!!! Praise God!!!
I love her! What a sweet sweet baby girl. I would think they would try to save ALL babies. If they die at least the parents can be comforted that doctors did all they could. This picking and choosing who is “viable” is just so absurd to me. Would they do that to someone in a car accident? “Look, this 25 year old woman isn’t going to make it so lets not even try.” DO they already do that to adults? Just a lack of compassion for ALL human life. Glad this baby made it!
Thank you Lord!!
Syd,
What about the women who are 23 weeks and 6 days? SOL
Carla,
I had one of those…I was told not to try to hold on to her, but I did anyway. When she was born, they didn’t try… she lived for an hour, with me totally out. I didn’t see her until the next morning. They didn’t even let me have that hour…
I have forgiven, but don’t know if I’ll ever forget…
I’m so very sorry you were robbed of your time with your precious baby girl, LS. :(
Wow, I can image God’s thumb on the scale.
I’m sorry for your loss, LS.
LS,
I am so sorry. Oh my heart.
What did you name your precious daughter?
Thanks to all of you! You are all very sweet! Her name is Janice Jael, and the Lord has used her mightily to expose lies and reveal truth! I am excited about her because I have the promise that I will see her again!!!
God places joy in–what we think are–the strangest places!!!
What a beautiful name!! Thank you so much for introducing your daughter to us.
God does indeed bring beauty from ashes and I will hold my babies in heaven just like you will LS. :)
God bless you!
Very cool story. Hope to stumble across a follow up in a few years.
Not all premature births can be prevented – certainly not. Continuing to expand healthcare to as many people in this country will be huge in continuing to bring down rates (5 years in a row of decreasing rates). States with good programs in the US have rates under 10% (premature baby births as a total percentage) – Maine, Vermont, Oregon, New Hampshire all were under 10%.
Other states don’t do well – Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama all had rates around 15%.
I hope we continue to promote and expand prenatal care and preventative care in this country.

Honest scales and balances are from the LORD; all the weights in the bag are of his making.
LS, you will see your daughter someday and it will be forever. LL <3
LauraLoo,
