Megan Lavelle’s daughter Emma was born wth a condition known as arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, which greatly weakens the muscles of her arms. Using 3D printers, Tariq Rahman and Whitney Sample at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children have constructed the Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton. It is made of lightweight plastic attached to a plastic vest, and enables Emma to play, draw, and hug her mother. She calls the device her “magic arms”.
