Stanek Sunday funnies 2-9-14
Happy Sunday! Here were my top five favorite political cartoons this past week. Be sure to vote for your fav in the poll at the bottom of this post!

And finally, for good measure, the clichéd liberal explanation for the recently reported downturn in abortion numbers, along with a clichéd poke at pro-lifers, by Dan Wasserman at GoComics.com…

On number five, I sort of agree with the cartoon – there are people yelling that the drop was about contraception, and people yelling that it was state laws – I think both groups are equally stupid and looking beyond the basic stats – which just reports numbers in a vacuum without much other info. To try to deduce a whole lot from what was reported is simply trying to write a story to feed one’s own agenda.
On health care reform – let me quote Paul Ryan ont his “Just to understand, it is not that employers are laying people off” – which was confirmed by the CBO.
So now GOPers are arguing that if a young couple wants a spouse to stay home longer with a new kid, it’s a bad thing that they have insurance subsidies to do that? The best way is for people to stay tied to a job just to keep insurance? To be clear – is that what the GOP is arguing?
I’m voting for #4 this week.
So now DemocRATs are arguing that if a young married couple wants the mother to stay home longer with a new kid, it’s a not a good thing that they had a job that offered insurance and they should not be allowed to keep the insurance and doctors they had and they should get their insurance policies cancelled due to Obamacare mandates because the government decides the insurance they doesn’t offer what they need. To be clear – is that what DemocRATs are saying? I mean they did shut down government rather then give these people exemptions from those mandates.
Holy run on sentence!
Anyway – a few things:
– Democrats didn’t argue anything really – it was the CBO (whom you mistrust) who gave the prediction.
– It has nothing to do with keeping or losing insurance or anything like that – and I have no idea what you even mean in the assessment regarding mandates. That part of the sentence (the massive long run on sentence) simply doesn’t make logical sense in the context the CBO was talking about.
– The government wasn’t shut down because of this.
So nobody will take an actual stab at what the GOP seems to be mad about? Or is it just noise – something we should come to expect from a party that has run out of legitimate ideas and simply whines all the time?
There wasn’t a question of the day yesterday – mine would be “is the GOP much better as a minority party in our Government – is that really their strength?”
“I have no idea what you even mean in the assessment regarding mandates.”
Ex-RINO, What mandates could I possibly be talking about and how could they possibly be related to people losing their insurance huh? So you plead ignorance and then when it is explained claim it the first you heard about it. I am not even gonna respond to your inane denials. Google the words ‘Obamacare policy cancellations’
“The government wasn’t shut down because of this.” Yes it was Ex-RINO. The government was shut down because the Democrats refused to delay the implementation of the individual mandate by one year. And then two months later Obama declared his now infamous decree when he held a press conference and announced he was unilaterally delaying the implementation of the individual mandate until the month after the mid-term elections.
In reference to the last cartoon, of course the “prolifer” is shown as an older white man. I have nothing against older white men, but the prolife movement includes ppl of all races, millions of women, and tons of young people. I told you when I went to see Gimme Shelter I saw quite a few teens, mostly female. Once again, please go out and see this film!
I have nothing against older white men – whew, thank you :-)
I told you when I went to see Gimme Shelter I saw quite a few teens, mostly female – that’s cos they thought it was about the Rolling Stones.
truth -
Yeah – I know what the mandate is – I just don’t know how you are linking it to the CBO and what they said this last week? Do you know what they said? Can you explain how you think the two are related?
The shutdown is a little different than what you think – look at the end results, and you’ll understand who the hostage takers were. If two parties start to talk, and one says I want A, and then other says I want B, C, and D – and then after shutting down the government – they simply agree on A – well, the party who wanted those other things were obviously in the wrong position and caused the impasse. Pretty elementary.
Hi phillymiss,
These same people had no problem with old white male Supreme Court justices giving us Roe v Wade. They also have no problem with old white males like Carhart performing abortions.
As long as they support abortion, the PA crowd will have no problem at all with old white males.
Ex-RINO, the best you could do is an ABCD analogy. Unfortunately it tells us nothing about what you are trying to say. Can you put it in somewhat more explicit terms by letting us in on what the variables ABC&D represent in your mind?
On a separate note… Did you know that when from a while back; with regard to transparency and this administration; Eric Holder testified before congress he said “he probably heard about Fast n’ Furious’ over the past few weeks but there are multiple DOJ correspondence from the previous year that show the DOJ knew about the guns crossing into Mexico; including correspondence that was addressed to Eric Holder. And the DOJ first admitted no knowledge of the operation and then said it was a few rogue field reps in Arizona and on and on and on. If Obama hadn’t been re-elected Obama would be impeached and Holder would be in jail. I thought this was going to be the most transparent government in history? Instead we have Chicago style government cronyism and corruption in DC for another three years. Own it.
truth –
Again, I know what the mandate is – I just don’t know how you are linking it to the CBO and what they said this last week? Do you know what they said? Can you explain how you think the two are related?
We can get to the other stuff later if you’d like – but I think you should be able to back up what you said previously.
Teenage girls going to see a movie because they think it’s about the Rolling stones? Reality: you have dated yourself! I’ve got an old bottle of Geritol set aside for ya. ;>)
I hear they’re still touring.
I’ve got an old bottle of Geritol – now who’s dating themself. ;-)
@Reality lol, do teens even know who the Stones are? They are still touring, some call them The Rolling Bones.
Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. I remember Ed Sullivan but not “Beatlemania.” So I guess that means I’m old but not ancient
Hi phillymiss,
I well remember “Beatlemania” and their appearance on Ed Sullivan.
Now that’s ancient.
Ex-RINO, you seem to understand A B C & D so lets try this:
A = GOP insisting on defunding Obamacare
B = DemocRATs refusing to defund Obamacare and shutting down governement instead.
C = GOP insisting on delaying the Obamacare individual mandate by one year.
D = DemocRATs refusing to delay the mandate and shutting down the government instead.
Leaing up to the government shutdown the GOP did A the Democrats responded with B so two days before the government shutdown the GOP said ok, forget about A and let’s do C. The DemocRATs responded with D. So the government was shut down until the GOP retracted there demand for C. Does that help you? Maybe besides ABCs we could try using pictures too if that helps you.
Ex-RINO, Do you agree with Nancy Pelosi when she says that people should not have to work to get health insurance? She thinks the people who do work should subsidize the health care for the ones who don’t work.
Mary you are not getting older, you’re getting better, like a fine wine!
Aren’t you a dear, phillymiss!
Can women compare other women to fine wine? What would happen if I had done it? :)
I would have said:
Aren’t you a dear, Thomas R!
Ok Mary but if my wife read a comment from me comparing another woman to fine wine, I’d have to pack :)
We’ll just keep this between us! :)
and everyone else :)
This poor little girl is dead because of Obamacare. Ex-RINO, does this help you understand what a cancelled policy is?:
http://nation.foxnews.com/2014/02/10/column-obamacare-killed-my-sister
Hi ts,
Just checked out Drudge and Der Fuehrer has delayed the Employer Mandate another year.
A rather interesting response by Speaker Boehner:
http://www.speaker.gov/press-release/boehner-statement-latest-manipulation-obamacare
I’m not holding my breath that the Republican House will grow a pair anytime soon.
Some of us were already calling them the Strolling Bones back in the 70’s phillymiss.
I’m declaring myself fortified wine.
Hi Reality,
I think medicinal wine would best describe me.
Oh yes, why’s that?
I have a very sedating effect on people. :)
You do realise that can be taken as a positive or a negative.
Why do you think that anyway?
Actually its just my attempt at humor, suggesting I’m a colossal bore! :)
Thank you for the positive thought though.
I may find you to be a few things but a bore to any extent at all doesn’t figure amongst them :-)
Well, aren’t you a dear, Reality!! :)
Thank you.
LOL Reality,
Come to think of it I don’t know what the few things you find me to be are, but I’ll take a compliment any way I can get it!
You are welcome :-)
truth – lots to get to – first of all though, you never answered the question I asked twice.
Now, the easy answer is, you had a massively long, massively illogical sentence where you just complained without saying anything that made sense. To be fair to the world, and to logic in general, you clearly don’t understand what the CBO said – and trying to tie it to the individual mandate is a massive step back for you regarding critical thought on the subject.
But I’m going to move past it because I feel like you’ve had a massively big breakthrough – I’m just not sure if you realize it yet…so I’ll get to that in the next few posts…
Okay – the government shutdown – let’s get this out of the way because it is a silly debate.
The general public blames the GOP, a lot of the GOP blames the GOP – it seems to just be you and few others who are holding out hope. Some in the tea party had circulated the idea to try to defund health care reform – and in the end, they didn’t have the power and had to back off the demands. Richard Burr, a Republican, said shutting down the government over the affordable care act was the “dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of”. So do you think Burr is an idiot and doesn’t understand who really shut down the government? Come on truth.
So let’s move on – if you want to keep this conversation up, you’ll lose – do some research.
Okay, your breakthrough.
The article you posted is tragic. As you know though, it isn’t new. What you seem to be acknowledging, finally, is that delaying medical care because you don’t have insurance – that this kills people. How many? Harvard estimated 45,000 a year. The logic was EXACTLY THE SAME as the article you posted – that people delayed or bypassed care because they didn’t have insurance, and thus, being insured caused their death.
The realities of the laws of health care reform can be blamed for this death – but if we’re logical, we MUST then say that there were tens of thousands of deaths a year because of lack of insurance.
So the answer then isn’t to get rid of reform – the answer is to get insurance to more people…
Do you disagree in any fashion? On to the Pelosi statement next where we can answer that question…
On Pelosi’s quote – you butchered it a bit – but I think it is close enough.
Now, Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney, Ronald Reagan, and maybe even yourself fundamentally agree with Pelosi – at least that people shouldn’t have to work to get health care. All have supported EMTALA and agree that people should get health care regardless of their ability to pay.
So the question I must ask is, why would a person want to encourage medical care when it is most expensive, but not be willing to look for solutions when it is least expensive?
On Pelosi’s quote in general – her position really isn’t that far off from a lot of the GOP, that says that everyone should lose their health care and go onto the free market (the GOP wants to get rid of a lot of employer coverage). The premise is that it will be more competitive on the open market. The only general consensus is that health care tied to employment ties down mobility (harder to start a business with that unknown) and makes us less competitive globally (look at the cost of a US car compared to a foreign car where health care costs don’t have to be built in).
So Pelosi is just combining these thoughts really – that in a perfect world, we wouldn’t tie health coverage to employment (and we already have shown that even Ronald Reagan doesn’t think that) – that we’d be better off as an economy without that tie.
And I happen to agree. What part of her quote don’t you agree with, and how far would you take it? Would you deny anybody on US soil health care if they were in an emergency?
Mary, many people in our society are terrified of growing older. Billions are spent on olastic surgery, anti aging creams, etc. I admit I do color my hair so I am not immune to the hype. Sometimes I wonder where the years went, but then I remember that stuff in many countries the life expectancy is not very high. So I consider each year a blessing. I have been going through some hard times but I have a job, a roof over my head clothes on my back, and food in my refrigerator, things people around the world, and even in this country, lack. That said, I have to run to the store to get some Naturtint Fireland (redheads have more fun :-)
Hi phillymiss,
How right you are! Where did the time go? I can remember thinking I had finally grown up when I was 30y/o. Pfffft. I was barely out of diapers. Youth is definitely wasted on the young.
I think there is more emphasis on staying young, but age is just a number. I’m for growing old with grace. Nothing makes a woman, or a man for that matter, look more ridiculous than not dressing age appropriate. No matter how well preserved, a brief tank top and short shorts look ridiculous past a certain age, unfortunately some people don’t realize that.
Every time I would say something like “I can’t wait until…..” my grandma would say “don’t wish your life away dear”. Like you phillymiss I’m grateful for the years, every day, life’s very difficult lessons, and that my life for most part now is pretty routine and boring.
Now, off to my beautician. My once auburn hair needs an occasional touchup. True about redheads. I did have some great times!
Good news Ex: the ACA mandate once again delayed until 2016 for employers with 50-99 employees. Who wants to wager that in 2016 ACA will either be delayed again, rolled back or totally destroyed. This OCare, as some of us predicted, is proving itself a big disaster and one that is not doable. I will be the first one in 2016 rubbing it in :)
True about redheads. I did have some great times!
As an “honorary” redhead, I say you can STILL have fun!
“OLDHEADS” ROCK!
Thomas –
Count me in as being 100% okay with a repeal and replace with universal care after Hillary wins in 2016.
I third the motion to repeal the ACA and put universal in place!
Me too!
And I hope Ted Cruz wins the republican nomination.
Ex-RINO, I will let Obamacare (aka the clusterf@&$) speak for itself. Suffice it to say that two days before the government shutdown the Republican party changed their demand from defunding Obamacare to demanding a delay in the individual mandate for one year for everybody. The DemocRATs refused and shut government down until the Republicans dropped that demand. Since then Obama has used press conferences to unilaterally declare the DOJ will not enforce the individual mandate for businesses and delayed it’s enforcement for two years. Unfortunately he has not done anything to keep his promise or to help the self-insured and we have watched millions of individual self-insured Americans suffer through health insurance policy cancellations. Including the little girl that died who you said you consider to be necessary collateral damage to your agenda.
All you imbeciles who voted in support of Obamacare (everybody who voted for a DemocRAT) and now want to repeal it and replace it with universal health care have caused immeasurable harm to our health care system and to our economy. And you knew that universal care wouldn’t pass when you did it. Don’t you feel slimy about sacrificing everybody to that clusterf2&$ of a law just so you could make everybody so miserable and screw up our private health care system so bad all in hopes that universal health care would be the only way out of this. Oh yeah, that’s right, you vote to kill babies in the womb too so why should anybody think you have a conscience.
Hi ts,
So let me get this straight. With universal health care, one attempted gov’t run cluster$$%% aka Obamacare, teaches us nothing, people, especially the poor, will have doctors and not be forced to visit ERs.
News flash folks. We were flooded with people making ER visits for the most trivial reasons, including bringing all five of their kids in for head colds, precisely because they had to pay nothing! This included the Insured as well as those on Medicare and Medicaid. BTW, they all had family doctors but they did not want to have to make appts. with and wait. You know, we’re leaving for vacation tomorrow and little Johnny got a sniffle, so we thought we’d bring in all the kids to be checked out as well. Insurance is paying for it. True story folks. I bet they were the first to squawk when their insurance rates went up.
BTW, isn’t there a provision in Obamacare to bail out these EEEEEEvil insurance companies?
Our FD rescue squad service was “free” as well, but was so badly abused by people who saw it as a taxi service, especially in the dead of a cold night, that the city was forced to start charging.
So what you will have with universal care is the continuation of people abusing “free” services for convenience.
Its called human nature.
Hillary my dear Sirs, if she wins, will inherit such a collosal mess – she will up to her elbows in the impossible task of clean-up; and if universal healtcare is eveer considered it will face the fate of ACA in terms of UNENDING DELAYS. Don’t hold your breaths anytime soon :)
Oops my spelling stinks this morning…
Hillary my dear Sirs, if she wins, will inherit such a collosal mess – she will up to her elbows in the impossible task of clean-up – won’t be that bad if the dems do ok at the mid-terms.
truthseeker -
SO lame – why don’t you just say when you’re beat. So you post an article arguing that not having insurance equals death for some people, and then have the arrogance to even ask the question then about my thoughts on Pelosi’s quote.
So direct question to you – given that you support that thought that not having insurance leads to the death of people, do you think that a legitimate pro-lifer could be against universal healthcare?
And truth – if the Dems were at fault for shutting down the government, why did the GOP just bend over backwards to get the debt ceiling raised so as not to be at fault again?
Come on – at least I can admit when the Dems are stupid and have issues – if you can’t even see this one, I question your ability to think outside the conservative box.
“And truth – if the Dems were at fault for shutting down the government, why did the GOP just bend over backwards to get the debt ceiling raised so as not to be at fault again?”
Cause the GOP are not idealogues and they know the DemocRATs would use the opportunity to punish the American people again. Barricade the WWII memorial etc. etc.
roflmbo!!!
The gop aren’t idealogues? That’s funny.
The dems would punish the people? What did the polls say about who was to blame?
The polls used to say people trusted Obama too…if he wasn’t such a crook that might be funny too.
truth – I’d dump from this thread as fast as you can – your statements are getting more and more incoherent. You’re ignoring direct questions, you are ignoring basic facts. Sometimes you hold your own…not this thread. Embarrassing.
The facts are only embarrassing when you get caught in a lie. So embarrass me and tell me which part of what part of what re-posted below is untrue.
“Suffice it to say that two days before the government shutdown the Republican party changed their demand from defunding Obamacare to demanding a delay in the individual mandate for one year for everybody. The DemocRATs refused and shut government down until the Republicans dropped that demand.”
And since then Obama has been busy granting Executive orders telling the DOJ and HHS not to enforce the Obamacare mandates against businesses but only enforce it against individuals. Doesn’t sound like he is looking after the little guy does it?
He starts by going after the most helpless. Individuals do not have the power fight against the government and once he has decimated them he will go after people who get insurance through their jobs.
It looks like the Democrats are again turning to the Brownshirts for help.
http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/198298-vulnerable-dems-want-irs-to-step-up
Does anyone see any mention of George Soros?
“reality:” Hillary my dear Sirs, if she wins, will inherit such a collosal mess – she will up to her elbows in the impossible task of clean-up – won’t be that bad if the dems do ok at the mid-terms. ”
I think you meant to say that the Republicans are poised to make significant gains in both, the Senate and the House in 2014. The delay gives Republicans an upper hand and voters are realizing that this gimmick’s time is up and Hillary ain’t all that. Like I said, don’t hold your breaths anytime soon.
Hm, looks like you’ve suffered a major comprehension fail there “Thomas R.”
truth – so you had a group of lawmakers who said they were going to shutdown the government over an issue, and then when the government was shutdown, you’ll willing to give them a free pass? Laughable.
What I don’t get truth is why you continue to partially engage in conversations, yet are starting to get more bold in simply skipping questions directly pointed at you. I’m just saying, if you can’t defend what you say, and don’t seem to understand what you support, do you think you should be shooting your mouth off? When it comes to outright whining and complaining – you are top notch. What it comes to actually understanding policy and coming up with solutions that you’d support…crickets…
One of these Ex-GOP?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Philadelphians_in_1884.JPG
No free pass Ex-RINO. They insisted on the individual mandate being rescinded for one year cause they could see all the millions of health care policies that were being cancelled because of Obamacare and they wanted to protect people from losing their doctors and their insurance policies. I say it was a proper thing for the GOP to fight for. In fact since then the mandate has been rescinded for businesses and a lot of special interests like unions and congress staffers etc. Why did the DemocRATs insist on shutting down government rather than rescinding it for the average Joe too? I can’t believe any citizen would still vote DemocRAT after that.
“reality:” Hm, looks like you’ve suffered a major comprehension fail there “Thomas R.” –
I think the fail is yours:
http://2014.state-election.info/
35 seats on the U.S. Senate and 435 seats on the U.S. House of Representatives are up for grabs. Don’t hold your breath and run around screaming the D word just yet. Nov 4 is 8 months out :)
I know when the mid-terms are “thomas real men don’t bath.”
Your failure was in what you thought I meant to say. Because you had that all wrong.
Indeed, 8 months. Obamacare bedded down and popular. The gop on the retreat on the economy. It’ll be grand.
see Truth – these are the types of questions that make me wonder if you study any of this, or just read headlines from Drudge and Fox and run with them.
Why in the world would you delay the individual mandate? There’s really no link the employer mandate (two different types of markets) – and you’d risk destabilizing the entire market. If you are going to change things like outlawing discrimination based on pre-existing conditions and taking away caps, you’ve got to start balancing that out with the trade off of personal responsibility.
Read up on it some – it would be good for you.
It is weird you would push a delay though – if you believe a delay in health insurance literally kills people, how could you morally push for anything that would increase the ranks of the uninsured?
“Why in the world would you delay the individual mandate?”
Ex-RINO, If after all the press about cancelled policies and people losing their doctors etc. you still can’t answer that question then you are too thick for me or anybody else to explain it to you now.
truth – did you notice that the most liked comment in the past 20 or 30 is the one where I said you should bail because your logic is completely, well, illogical and embarrassing at this point?
And now it continues.
How in the world do you relate a mandate saying that people need to buy health insurance with insurance regulations on what sort of coverage they must have? How are those two related?
Let’s be honest though. You don’t care about individuals. You don’t care about the millions that were uninsured and, by your own logic, have put their lives on the line because of that. You don’t care about people who have lost their insurance – heck, the policieis YOU SUPPORT – Paul Ryan’s plan and other conservative policies, would results in MILLIONS losing their employer based coverage. So while you whine and complain about people being shifted from one plan to another, YOU SUPPORT A MASSIVE UPHEAVAL of the entire employer market.
OWN THAT truth – understand what you support – do a little research, and understand the issues. What you complain about – about 95% of it, would be solved through Universal care. It simply would.
