Elisabeth Hasselbeck: Cover mama
The last time we discussed The View conservative co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, she had just announced she was pregnant, which caused liberal co-host Rosie O’Donnell to blog she was hence too delicate to debate any longer about 9/11 conspiracies or the Iraq War. But when Rosie couldn’t help herself and broke her promise, she stepped in it and then tried to blame Elisabeth two days later. But when Elizabeth more than held her own, Rosie got her feelings hurt (interesting to rewatch) and quit the show early. Score one for the power of pregnant mothers.
That was May. My, how Elisabeth has blossomed throughout the summer, to the point she is gracing the cover of the November issue of Pregnancy magazine. So cute, and one tiny sign we are breaking the stronghold of liberal political correctness
Elisabeth answered questions of interest in an interview inside….
PM: Pregnancy hormones and all, how on earth did you keep it together so well during your big argument with Rosie on The View?
EH: I think when you’re pregnant, it kind of goes one way or the other. I almost had the same feeling in me as when I had a championship [softball] game and I was up to bat and the pressure was on. I’m very lucky that tears didn’t come out. But unfortunately when a woman cries, it’s never seen as a sign of strength and never seen in a positive light. A man cries and he’s sensitive, and a woman cries and she’s weak. So, even when you’re debating another woman, the first person to cry pretty much loses.
PM: What are the challenges of being a conservative mother in 2007?
EH: Being a conservative mother isn’t the challenge. Being a conservative in New York City on television is the challenge. Once I had [2-year-old] Grace, I had more reassurance and affirmation as to why I have felt the things that I’ve felt for a long time. And as a mom, now I want to make sure that the decisions I’m making and the votes that I’m casting are going to create long-term benefits for Grace and my next child and hopefully more to come after that.

She’s adorable. :)
Hey there, Little Black Riding Hood….
It almost looks like she’s wearing a Jedi cloak. Jedi cloaks are such a cool look. Everyone should start wearing them.
There’s a woman who’s got her act together!
I notice she said “my next child”. Shouldn’t she as a pro lifer be saying “my second child” or something in more of a present tense?
I notice she said “my next child”. Shouldn’t she as a pro lifer be saying “my second child” or something in more of a present tense?
I don’t get what you mean, JK. ? The child in her womb is her next child.
But saying “next” implies that it is not “currently” a child.
“So cute, and one tiny sign we are breaking the stronghold of liberal political correctness”
Wait, are you saying being a strong pregnant woman is politically incorrect? Maybe people just don’t know what real strength is. I know it takes a lot out of me just watching children and doing housework. For me that is actually harder then just running or climbing. Of course I’m not saying it’s a woman’s job to do that, the woman can do whatever she can do while pregnant. Make wine if it makes you happy (just don’t drink any!).
But saying “next” implies that it is not “currently” a child.
No, you’re just reading too much into it. Elizabeth already recognizes her child as a child at this moment.
Jess, I’m saying putting Elisabeth on the cover indicates a tiny step toward breaking the political correctness stronghold.
Again with the politicization and bipartisan wrangling of a natural occurrence. Who cares if she’s pregnant and conservative? I am failing to see how that is relevant to anything really. Why do you always harp on a person’s political affiliation? Partisanship has lead the US on a dark, dark path. At a time when we should be more united we are instead dividing ourselves into “camps”.
Why can’t anybody realize how stupid and often counter-productive this is?
Anyway, done with my rant about partisanship. It’s all about working together and compromising folks, that’s the way we ought to “git ‘er done” It’s how the Founding Fathers worked. :)
Maybe, but its worth noting some of the seemingly contradictory things that many expectant pro lifers say. If you ask many pregnant women with two already born children how many children she has, she will usually answer with “Two and one on the way” or “This will be my third”, contradictory to claiming the unborn child gains equality with the already born children.
Kudos to Elisabeth! A real woman! She’s not fearful of all of those pro deathers working with her.
Look again at the biggest headline on the magazine cover. It says, Pimp my stroller.
I realize it’s a play on “Pimp My Ride”, but doesn’t it sound not a little weird to have the words “pimp” and “stroller” in the same sentence?
I’m not certain why people waste their time watching the degradation of women on a regular basis on TV, because that’s exactly what “The View” is.
This show represents the worst of how women act, and if you are looking to provide a means for men to act in an even more beligerent manner than we already do towards women, then by all means, watch this show and encourage others to do so and let the pettiness and cattiness continue.
Rae, 12:40p, said: “It’s all about working together and compromising folks….”
Rae, Rae, Rae, RAE: Pardon me for yelling, but PLEASE GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD THAT WE WILL NEVER COMPROMISE. WE WILL NEVER WORK TOGETHER.
Compromising on how many, how often, how old, or what good reasons there are to kill babies IS NOT POSSIBLE. WE ARE GOING TO STOP IT.
Andrew, I agree with you. The View just isn’t my “cup of tea” anymore. I loathe Whoopi and Joy Behar. 2 rabid pro deathers!
@Jill: I wasn’t talking about abortion. Believe it or not, there are other issues out there besides abortion (I know that’s hard to grasp). I know we’ll never compromise on abortion, dear, I’m not stupid.
And Jill…
We can compromise on the abortion issue. Yes, you can make it illegal. Go right ahead. But you also need to go about changing the ideas of people and working to prevent people from getting into the situation in which they end up with an unwanted pregnancy occurs.
This is where the compromise occurs. When you make abortion illegal, the “demand” for abortions won’t completely evaporate into thin air. I think using comprehensive sex education WITH an emphasis on abstinence as well as a nice heaping serving of “learning to do the responsible thing” will help. That’s the compromise, you save your babies and people learn how to be responsible and learn to prevent having those unwanted pregnancies in the first place.
But of course, I suppose that even that is too liberal, which is a shame considering from the stats I’ve been looking at…the HIV/AIDS epidemic is starting to re-emerge. :(
Sheeze. I sound like a bit of a hypocrite with the whole, “we’ll never compromise” going to “there is a way to somewhat compromise”.
Oy vey.
Jess, I’m saying putting Elisabeth on the cover indicates a tiny step toward breaking the political correctness stronghold.

…………………………………
How do you figure? Is the first pregnant conservative woman to dare to venture out of the house due the sinfull nature of her condition?
While a cute picture it’s hardly the work of art that was Annie’s pic of Demi.
Elisabeth looks like a nervously giggling little girl that is doing something slightly naughty. While Demi looked like a grown woman compfortable with herself, her body and her pregnancy.
I really cannot see what ‘political correctness’ has been broken.
Rae,
Who are you and what have you done with the other Rae?
I would be thrilled with the plan you put forth. OF course we couldn’t, nor should we stop women from making choices in their bedrooms. BUT, birth control that acts as an abortifacient is not really birth control. It’s still abortion.
Those of us that think contraception is not the best way to go, can pass those values along in our families and churches, and try to educate anyone willing to listen.
There is a difference between values that Catholics/Christians share, like not using birth control, and what the general public’s values are.
We don’t expect the general public to live up to our standards. It would be nice if they did, but it is still their choice.
As to educating on the use of birth control, I agree, provided there is a HEAVY emphasis on abstinence. And none of this “We know you’re going to do it anyway” stuff. Just the facts.
Are you sure you don’t want to come back to the church? You’re starting to sound awfully Catholic…lol
@MK: The other Rae got sick of being called another one of them “pro-abort liberalzzz” (still liberal though. :D)and “baby-killer”. The other Rae also decided that being ardently pro-choice for the sake of being contrary to her Catholic upbringing was a poor reason.
That and Rae also “grew-up” a bit in her thinking and realized she was being inconsistent with being pro-choice but anti-war and anti-death penalty and with her feelings that the only time killing is remotely justifiable is in self-defense (this goes for abortion…the only time I see abortion as a remotely “right” option is when the mother’s life is at risk).
:)
Yay for Rae!!
Okay Rae,
Now you’ve gone and made me cry…that is, well that is, I don’t even know what that is, but it sure does make me awfully happy…It’s sort of like getting a present all wrapped up in pink paper and tulle…
Ahhhhh…phooey.
I’m gettin’ all smishy…
I love you Rae.
Rae –
Yea for Rae! Now we have another pro-life liberal. I love it! Now PIP won’t be all alone fighting us crazy conservatives! ;-)
Love ya Rae!
I’d love ya no matter what though….
;-)
I don’t understand how this is relevant, to be honest.
Good for you Rae. Your story sounds very similiar to mine.
Valerie, I am a liberal too. The count is at three. We are taking over.
Sally, you come off as very vicious and insecure. Elisabeth is cute. She looks very cute pregnant. Why don’t you grow up? You’re 50, so I think it’s time.
At first I thought she was walking to the right, with her head turned way around.
Doug, what? I don’t get it.
Rae,

Rae, I am so happy beyond words to hear you say that. We love you, always will!
Rae, I used to feel that a woman ought to have a right to an abortion too. I began to really take a closer look at what I was supporting. Believe it or not, I used to believe that abortion was a responsible thing to do. You don’t want the kid, I would rather see you abort it than abuse it. What the hell was I thinking? I never realized that there were 1.3 million abortions a year. I never realized that Roe was a liar. I never educated myself on molesting abortionists. GAG!
I’m very ashamed of what I used to support. My line was “I’d never have an abortion, but if you want one, who am I to stop you?” “It’s your choice.” Looking back, how many women could I have helped instead of turning my back? They all killed their children, and I didn’t ever offer them any support.
Carrie –
Cool! Okay thats 3 liberal Pro-Lifer’s on here. Hopefully more will pop up.
;-)
*shrugs*
Eh, don’t get too excited. I’m still squeamish on the whole rape thing. For me, that is difficult and I still haven’t made up my mind because yes, I realize it’s not the fetus/baby’s fault for being there, but I do think that forcing a woman to keep that pregnancy can be cruel for the woman (psychologically). Now I know that’s not always the case and that some women are very willing to keep their baby even if it is conceived via rape, but not every woman is like that.
*sigh*
’tis complicated.
@Heather: Just so you know, I changed my mind not on the basis of “molesting abortionists” or the “photos”. I knew exactly what I was supporting at the time. I just realized after awhile how inconsistent I was being (and hypocritical as I’d point out the inconsistencies in other “pro-lifers” who were also pro-war and pro-death penalty) and decided that that cognitive dissonance did not sit well. That and after my experience with my friend and her pregnancy scare and how angry I was with her…I realized that I wasn’t really that PC after all.
However, my “change of heart” or whatever will not stop me from “bustin’ chops” and calling people out on bad arguments and what not (this goes for both “sides”).
Doug, what? I don’t get it.
Heather, just a funny first impression I had of the picture. Like her butt was sticking out to the left, and we see her right arm. Her body would be pointing the to right, and her head turned around more than 90 degrees, looking back at the camera.
I’d point out the inconsistencies in other “pro-lifers” who were also pro-war and pro-death penalty
Rae, I can certainly see how you would feel that way, but I don’t think it’s necessarily inconsistent.
Many, many people are against abortion but for the death penalty, and I have no problem with that – they are two quite different things. One could easily have the philosophy that any killing is wrong, but from being pro-life in the abortion debate doesn’t mean that being against capital punishment would have to follow.
Doug
@Doug: I know, but SOME of the people that I know say they are pro-life because they believe human life is sacred, yet apparently criminals don’t count? They’re humans too. That’s what I always found inconsistent.
*shrugs*
It’s just how I think because to me, if you’re going to be against the killing of the unborn, you darn well better be against the killing of the already born. Again, just my interpretation/opinion.
Rae-
Hear hear!! Finally I won’t be the only one trying to defend the “stupid liberal” argument that keeps flying around.
And dude, totally understand where you are coming from. That’s why I’m over here too :)
P.S. I also think pro-death penalty is a breach of pro-life ethics, and one in which, like the mother’s life issue, should only be allowed when society will only be safe if they were to be executed.
To say that criminals “don’t count” is inconsistent, and the Church says that herself.
http://www.americancatholic.org/News/DeathPenalty/
Rae, fair enough. You had your reasons for changing your mind, and I had my reasons for changing mine.
@PiP: Hi5! We will kick the “big dumb liberal” stereotype one of these days! PiP, we should run for el presidente. I think we’re qualified for the job (ignore the whole you gotta-be-35-thing, we can just add up our ages, I’m sure that will push us over 35…:-p)
*sigh*
@Heather: Indeed. ^_^ Cheers madame!
Haha, Rae, we should! I bet we’d really kick butt in the elections! ;)
@PiP: Let’s make our own political party because the democrats are wimps and the republicans are…unpleasant (I’m being nice!).
I say our name ought to be affiliated with Stephen Colbert somehow (I’m still jealous, I soooo hope he comes to Minneapolis next year!).
Rae, this makes my day. It has really brightened it. You have no idea.
My day has been horrible so far.
For my first English paper, my professor gave me a C for “not following the assignment.” I thought I pointed out women’s roles in Lysistrata’s satire but apparently she didn’t get it. She would rather me talk more about how the “form” contributed to the satire. What else is there to say about the form? It was a drama…because that is how a lot of Greeks wrote…and it was a comedy, which I thought I tied in with the women part, because the battle between the sexes was so silly. I thought she liked me!! :(
Then my counterpart in my movie just left me a cryptic message that he wanted our movie taken off youtube, and that we should “talk” but it has nothing to do with me. I haven’t gotten a hold of him all day. It’s not like we are dating or anything, so wtf does our youtube video have to do with anythign?
And tomorrow I have another 50 question “quiz” in medical terminology and I had to miss monday’s note taking because of another one of those sleeping pill mishaps. So it’s hard because I usually interact in that class a lot and remembering conversation usually helps.
Ughhhhhh
“@PiP: Let’s make our own political party because the democrats are wimps and the republicans are…unpleasant (I’m being nice!).
I say our name ought to be affiliated with Stephen Colbert somehow (I’m still jealous, I soooo hope he comes to Minneapolis next year!).”
We should! Let’s call our party “America’s Wørd!”
That turned out weird. I meant the “O” to have the slash thingee.
@PiP: I’m glad I helped your day! :D I’m sorry to hear about your english paper, I *knew* there was a reason why I avoid english classes like the plague. :) To be honest, I have no idea what you were talking about (Lysistrata?), but it sounds like it would be a pain in the bum!
I haven’t watched your video, what was it about? I hope you get a-hold of your counterpart and get all this nonsense sorted out.
Your medical terminology class considers 50 questions a “quiz”? Crikey, what do they think a test is!? :(
“We should! Let’s call our party “America’s Wørd!””
What? “America’s Ward”?
I have my first genetics and my first microbiology exams this week. Meep!
@Pip: Ooooh, “America’s Word”.
Hahahaha. I love the “Word”. I wish I still had cable and could watch the Report…
Lysistrata is a greek play. I’m not very good at English either, but usually good enough to get by with an A in a 200 level class! >: O
Well if I get an A in everything else I can get an A since the paper was only 2-3 pages. I just hate starting out on the wrong foot, then there is no room to screw up on anythign else!
“I haven’t watched your video, what was it about?”
It was a “tour guide” of our town, which really is us wreaking mayhem in our town. So it’s nothing personal at all, its just us goofing around (but it’s really funny!). So that’s why it’s confusing me. He said that if I cared about him I’d take it off. So I’m like wha?? Everyone seems to love it?
“Your medical terminology class considers 50 questions a “quiz”? Crikey, what do they think a test is!? :(”
You are asking me!
“I have my first genetics and my first microbiology exams this week. Meep!”
Good luck! I’ve been waiting patiently to see what my first genetic results were, but I don’t think it will ever get up because our teacher is technologically impaired. There doesn’t even seem a place on blackboard for grades. I’m sure you’ll do great!
Aww I’m so sad for you! Especially now that viacom has taken everything off youtube. Doesn’t college provide you with cable?
@PiP: I don’t live on campus anymore, I live off campus so no cable for me unless I want to cough up 50 bucks a month (which I can’t afford on top of groceries and rent). I don’t even have internet at my apartment, I’m sitting in the MCB building on campus!
I’m nervous about the genetics exam, we just started learning about intragenic mapping in bacteriophages and it’s soooo confusing! There is a LOT to remember (especially the formula for chi square analyses and binomial expansions). Hissssss!
Viacom is evil.
PIP, good luck and keep up the good work.
In January it’ll be 30 years that I’ve been out of college, but reading your description of some of the things you’re doing brings that old feeling right back….whew.
Doug
Wow Rae, you must either be in a more advanced genetics or my principles of genetics class is much more simplified! We are just learning about calculating variance and heretibility to find out about environmental effects…
Yes, very very evil.
Rae: Doug: I know, but SOME of the people that I know say they are pro-life because they believe human life is sacred, yet apparently criminals don’t count? They’re humans too. That’s what I always found inconsistent.
Agreed – if the deal is that human life is sacred, then you’re right on.
…..
*shrugs*
It’s just how I think because to me, if you’re going to be against the killing of the unborn, you darn well better be against the killing of the already born. Again, just my interpretation/opinion.
I can dig it, but would insist that the situation will almost always make a difference. Self-defense, for example. Or wartime – would somebody really want their country to not fight back against an attacking force?
With capital punishment, I can see the objection, often. But then there are cases like Jessica Lunsford, in Florida. Guy kidnaps a nine year old girl, does terrible things to her, then kills her. Incontrovertible evidence and the guy also confesses. If there is a button to be pushed, I’d push it, and fast.
Doug
I read Lysistrata for my Ancient Stories in Modern Films class, which was a pretty cool class. We compared it to the movie 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton, the themes of women taking over and holding things over men tying the two together.
