- Abstinence Clearinghouse points out how the Boston Globe surprisingly admits that part of the nation’s abortion decline is likely due to “an ’empathy-driven reaction’ for all of the Americans that grew up in a world of vivid ultrasound images and miraculous neonatal medicine for preemies.”
- At Live Action News, Susan Michelle promotes the upcoming #ProlifeYouth tweetfest, to be held on Thursday, June 25th. The goal is to engage more people in the pro-life movement and to “show the world that youth are pro-life, contrary to what the media portrays.”
Abortion may be entirely illegal in Chile, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways.
Shocking mock, do-it-yourself abortion guides have popped up on YouTube as part of a disturbing public ad campaign in support of legalizing abortion in the predominantly Roman Catholic country in cases of rape or medical complications.
In the “abortion tutorial” video series, one woman demonstrates how to fall, stomach first, onto a fire hydrant while walking on a pair of broken stiletto heels. Another woman demonstrates how to get hit by a car.
“Make sure the car hits you head-on, stomach (to) bumper,” she instructs before stepping out in front of a traffic light.

In 1914 Agnes Cuff, a flighty and unstable young woman with few prospects and little money found herself pregnant. The father didn’t want to be involved. She was alone, shamed, poor and pregnant.
Today she would be encouraged to get herself to an abortion clinic and end the unwanted pregnancy.
Instead a little boy was born….
If abortion had been easy and legal in England in 1914 the world would never have experienced the witty, smart, subtle art and the quiet, steady witness of Alec Guinness…
… and Star Wars would have had an enormous void.

Stop Patriarchy is a pro-abortion group led by Communist Sunsara Taylor that believes “revolution” and a “counteroffensive” are needed to “radically reset” what it correctly sees as escalating “attacks on abortion.”
One tactic of Stop Patriarchy is to engage in “confrontational, dramatic, non-violent” protests.
Because the “war on women… is getting worse,” Stop Patriarchy is upping its game, planning protests next week in Washington, D.C., Oakland and San Francisco, California, and Austin, Texas, in conjunction with annual pro-life marches and rallies….
How “radical” is Stop Patriarchy? Even mainstream abortion groups have distanced themselves from it.
One example of Stop Patriarch’s radicalism came just two days ago, when member Riley Ruiz was arrested at New York City’s Union Square subway for “dramatic street theater consist[ing] of women lying ‘dead’ while wearing white outfits stained with blood between their legs and holding the faces of real women who died from botched abortion when it was not legally available.”
Riley is the one shouting in this video…
At next week’s protests Stop Patriarchy plans is to show 6-foot photos of pregnant mothers who died pre-Roe from illegal abortions.
To accumulate enough photos, Stop Patriarchy apparently had to go all the way back to Clara Duvall in 1929, who may or may not have caused her own death by self-abortion.
Whatever, Stop Patriarchy is asking for artistic help in improving the poor quality of some of its photos.
I have some more recent photos Stop Patriarchy could use, photos of mothers who have died from legal abortions. Some died very recently, so their photos are nicely pixelated. Click to enlarge…
That’s Tonya Reaves on the left, who died at a Chicago Planned Parenthood in 2012. Next to her is Jennifer Morbelli, who died at the hand of infamous late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart in 2013; then Marla Cardamone, who died after an abortion at Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1989; then Christin Gilbert, a 19-yr-old with Down syndrome, who died in 2005 at the clinic of another infamous late-term abortionist, George Tiller, but who was likely killed by Carhart; then Lakisha Wilson, who died in 2014 after an abortion at Preterm Abortion Clinic in Cleveland, OH; then Karnamaya Mongar, who Kermit Gosnell killed in 2009; and finally Laura Smith, killed in 2007 at the hand of abortionist Rapin Osathanondh in Hyannis, MA.
I could go on.
In fact, the CDC reports 421 women have died from legal abortions in the U.S. since 1973. CDC’s latest figures show 10 women died in 2010 alone.
Meanwhile, the number of illegal abortions pre-Roe is well known to have been grossly exaggerated. Even pro-abortion columnist Ellen Goodman had to correct the “10,000 a year” figure she used in a 2004 Boston Globe column. The year before Roe, 1972, 39 women died from illegal abortions, according to the CDC. Quoting StraightDope.com:
[W]e find that 1,682 abortion-related deaths were officially reported in 1940….
The biggest factor in reducing abortion mortality was undoubtedly the overall improvement in prenatal and obstetrical care after World War II.
The rate of pregnancy-related deaths from causes other than abortion dropped at roughly the same pace as the abortion death rate from 1940 through 1974….
The increased mass production of Penicillin beginning in 1943 was also a huge factor.
Pro-life group Created Equal plans to show pictures of post-Roe’s maternal victims [warning: link includes autopsy photos] at the D.C. March for Life – as well as a few of its 57 million preborn victims.
Can’t forget those, although Stop Patriarchy tries.

Exactly who perpetrated the fatal abortion doesn’t seem to pique the interest of those who want to hang her death around her distant-relative-by-marriage’s neck.
What I find particularly fascinating is that amid the obsession over Ann Keenan (obsession likely to arise again should [Mitt] Romney aim again for the White House) there is a blithe obliviousness of “safe and legal” abortion deaths.
In fact, one politician — Margo Davidson, a Democrat and Pennsylvania State Representative — lost her support from Planned Parenthood after going public about how her cousin, Semika Shaw, died a wretched death after an abortion by notorious Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell. This is going beyond merely ignoring safe-n-legal abortion deaths and into the realm of punishing the survivors.
Is it really women’s deaths that bother abortion-rights activists so much, or is it something else?
~ Christina Dunigan, reflecting on abortion advocates’ lack of concern for women dying from legal abortions, “Which Abortion Deaths Matter?,” Real Choice, October 8
Note: Recall Gosnell’s gruesome operation was “only caught by accident, when police raided his offices to seize evidence of his illegal prescription selling,” not thanks to abortion clinic inspections or regulations.

Sad to hear of the passing of Polly Bergen – an unforgettable talent and a beloved friend of Planned Parenthood.
~ Planned Parenthood’s Twitter feed on the death of post-abortive singer/actress Polly Bergen. According to Yahoo! TV, her publicist, Judy Katz, announced that “in lieu of flowers, her family is asking that donations be made to Planned Parenthood.”
Added the LA Times:
Bergen also was an ardent feminist, campaigning for the Equal Rights Amendment and women’s reproductive rights. She spoke publicly about having had an illegal abortion when she was a 17-year-old band singer – a procedure that she said prevented her from bearing children for the rest of her life.
During the last week of May abortion proponent Dawn Porter and members of the National Network of Abortion Funds traversed southern Texas and upper Mexico to film footage for an upcoming documentary, Trapped.
Trapped will “look at the impact of Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers (TRAP) laws in the southern United States, and their disproportionate effect on women living in poverty.”
There are currently no abortion clinics in the Rio Grande Valley, which borders Mexico. The nearest one in the U.S. is 230 miles north in San Antonio.
The group filmed themselves crossing the border to buy Misoprostol, an ulcer drug that is used off-label to induce abortions.
Misoprostol is available only by prescription in the U.S. and can only be dispensed by doctors for abortions. But it can be purchased over-the-counter in Mexico.
After the purchase, NNAF tweeted photos, along with instructions on how to use Misoprostol illegally to self-induce an abortion…

Back in the day abortion proponents claimed the only way to avoid back alley hack job abortions was to legalize it.
Now that legal abortion is becoming scarcer in places, proponents are reversing course and promoting the very same illegal abortions they protested against four decades ago.
Abortion zealots need a death
This is a dangerous game – of which abortion zealots are fully aware. One such illegal abortion pill provider wrote at Jezebel:
I send women what I can – misoprostol, or mifepristone/misoprostol in combination [JLS note: RU-486 abortion cocktail] when I have some stocked. I know, when I do it, that it could be a devil’s bargain – that this could be the envelope that gets traced back to me. This could be the one that lands me in prison. Or, even worse, it could be the one that kills someone. The abortion drugs rarely cause major complications (less often than birth), but they do happen. I don’t know what I would do with that on my conscience. I haven’t had to find out yet.
“Yet.” They know the day is coming. They’ll, of course, deny it, but abortion zealots actually salivate for that coming day. They are playing Russian Roulette with women’s lives on purpose, precisely to have someone end up dead.
They need another Gerri Santoro, and quick. Otherwise, their claims that abortion must stay legal to avoid needless deaths will prove false. Recall how they preplanned to exploit and lie about the death of Savita Halappanavar in Ireland in 2012 to promote legalized abortion. They need tragedies to sway public opinion and pressure politicians.
I’ve actually been somewhat surprised they haven’t yet gotten the dead poster child they long for. Which brings me to a post yesterday by Tim Graham at Newsbusters that may explain why we may not have seen it.
Texas abortionist profitted from illegal abortions
Graham wrote about an article in the September issue of Cosmopolitan, written by Amanda Robb, who bragged how Texas abortionist Lester Minto (pictured right) circumvented the law for a time at his now closed Reproductive Services of Harlingen, near the Mexican border.
After a Texas law took effect last November 1 forcing abortionists to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of their clinics, which Minto could not get, he began encouraging pregnant mothers to purchase Misoprostol across the border or at a flea market and then come to him one week after ingesting the drug for “miscarriage management” – at $550 a pop.
The article (not available online) made an interesting point:
Before the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide in its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, miscarriage management was a common end-run around laws prohibiting the procedure. In order to get medical care, a woman had to find a way to make herself bleed vaginally. A sharp object stabbed through the cervix often did the trick.
“But I’m not seeing that now,” Dr. Minto told me. “So far, women today try drugs.”
For years pro-lifers have been saying we are not getting an accurate read on the danger of medical abortions due to inconsistent reporting requirements and because emergency room physicians may not even know they are dealing with abortion complications – because they are not told.
National Network of Abortion Funds’ “how-to” guide on lying
In fact, this is precisely what abortion advocates tell women to do – lie. NNAF hosts a web page explaining how to use Misoprostol illegally, with instructions to lie to medical staff at the hospital emergency room one drags herself to:
Misoprostol causes a miscarriage. The symptoms of a miscarriage and an abortion with pills are EXACTLY the same and the treatment is EXACTLY the same. You do not need to say that you took the medication. If you took it as instructed at Women on Waves, it dissolves and there is no test that can tell a doctor or nurse that you took medicines. In every hospital in the world, doctors know how to treat a miscarriage or a complication from a miscarriage.
It is important to remember that in many states in the US, causing an abortion by yourself is a crime. Any person who knows you used abortion medication by yourself might feel obliged to report you.
This means abortion proponents won’t readily get the complications they need. The game has changed. Their only recourse may be to launch a PR campaign saying the abortion complications are out there, we’re just not seeing them.
Another possibility is the eventual publicized death from an illegal abortion – which will tragically happen sooner or later – will be traced back to one of these illegal abortion pushers, like Dawn Porter or members of the National Network of Abortion Funds.
We’ll see how long they keep smiling.
One of four remaining clinics that provide abortions in Kansas has closed amid a hostile political climate and financial challenges.
Its outgoing manager said Monday the decision was also prompted by a “lack of gratitude” from a young generation of women who take its abortion services for granted.
~ The Wichita Eagle, July 28
Sure, a woman’s main concern on a day-to-day basis may not be abortion rights. Her main concern may be basic healthcare for herself and her kids, or something else. But she has the luxury of abortion rights not being her main concern because it’s been an absolute guaranteed right in this country for 40 years. That means every woman in this country under the age of 40 never had to worry about getting an illegal, unsafe abortion….
That’s a long time to get lulled into a sense of security that that right is never going away — and therefore we don’t need to make its protection a priority….
