Pro-life news brief 4-15-13

  • Another Philadelphia abortionist testified for the prosecution today in Kermit Gosnell’s murder trial. While pro-choice bloggers are crowing about access to abortion in Philadelphia, today’s witness notes that he is one of 4 abortionists left in the city:

Dr. Charles Benjamin is one of about four abortion providers left in Philadelphia in the wake of Dr. Kermit Gosnell’s arrest two years ago. His testimony was received by “an influx of reporters.”

Benjamin, by his own count, has performed 40,000 abortions over a 30-year career. He doesn’t do them after 21 weeks, or three weeks shy of the 24-week limit in Pennsylvania, he said.

Gosnell is accused of performing illegal, late-term abortions and running a dangerously outdated clinic staffed by untrained workers. Benjamin said that he has registered nurses on staff to monitor patients, and that only he or a nurse anesthetist give anesthesia, unlike Gosnell’s clinic, where workers hired to clean instruments or handle paperwork have testified that Gosnell trained them to administer potent intravenous drugs….

An influx of reporters attended the trial Monday, spurred by criticism that some broadcasters were not covering the trial. A gag order prevents lawyers from speaking outside and no cameras are allowed inside the courtroom.

Journalists invited to report editors who spiked Gosnell story

We know there are journalists out there infuriated by their employer’s current behavior: The change must start with you. We are looking for whistleblowers: if you have any information regarding why your employer is not covering the Gosnell trial, please submit it here. Your anonymity will be protected. ~ PJ Media, encouraging journalists to anonymously […]

Stanek Sunday funnies: “Gosnell” edition

I expect more Gosnell political cartoons will roll out this week, but here are the first three. I’m also including two flashbacks from January 30, 2011, when the Gosnell mass murders were first publicized. Vote for your favorite at the bottom of this post.

Stanek weekend question: How do we handle mea culpas?

Kermit GosnellUPDATE 4/14, 5:15p: Elizabeth at Patheos has written a great related piece, “Is MSM awareness of Gosnell a wave in tide of God’s mercy?” (HT: Kirsten Powers)

4/13, 11:03: There is a fine line between righteous indignation and gloating.

I would identify the charges levied against the media for ignoring the Kermit Gosnell mass murder trial as righteous indignation.

We pro-lifers engage in this a lot. There is daily evidence that MSM ignores or distorts stories on abortion.

Washington Post: “We should have sent a reporter sooner”

We believe the story is deserving of coverage by our own staff, and we intend to send a reporter for the resumption of the trial next week. In retrospect, we should have sent a reporter sooner. ~ Martin Baron, Executive Director of the Washington Post, speaking about the trial of accused mass murderer abortionist, Kermit […]

Join #Gosnell TweetFest to break the media blackout

The media is suddenly starting to pay attention to mass murderer Kermit Gosnell, thanks in part to a “tweet fest” currently underway until midnight to “break the media blackout,” as is posted on the Facebook event page launched by Andy Moore, Bryan Kemper, and Troy Newman.

Kudos, too, to pro-life Democrat Kirsten Powers, who also helped light a fire under her liberal friends in the media with her USA Today post.

  • Clinic Quotes has a chilling reminder of the history that we should not forget. Did you know the company that manufactured the poison gas used in Nazi gas chambers is the same company that obtained the patent for chemical abortion drug RU-486?

Four reasons why media isn’t covering Gosnell mass murder trial

UPDATE 4/16, 9:50a: The Atlantic has posted 14 possible reasons for the media blackout.

UPDATE 4/14, 5:10p: The Gospel Coalition has posted eight reasons for the media blackout, which are good.

4/11, 4:34p: Living in Chicago, I’ve observed press coverage up close on three of the most notorious mass murderers ever apprehended: Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and Richard Speck.

Speck tortured, raped, and murdered eight student nurses in Chicago in 1966. Dahmer murdered 17 boys and men in the Milwaukee/Chicago area between 1978-1991, keeping and eating some of their body parts. Gacy raped and murdered at least 33 boys and men between 1972-1978, burying many in the crawl space of his Chicago suburban home.

In each case the press tripped over themselves to recount every morbid detail, anxious to feed the public’s fascination with the macabre (click to enlarge)…
