Pro-life news brief 4-30-13

  • At the Washington Post, Erik Wemple busts NARAL president Ilyse Hogue’s obvious lie that NARAL was “first out of the gate to call attention to [the Gosnell] case”:

Having done precisely 3,454 Nexis and Internet search on the Gosnell case, we missed the part where NARAL had led a charge to highlight the alleged atrocities in West Philadelphia. So we Nexised again, checking on NARAL’s footprint around the time that Gosnell was indicted in January 2011. Not much there. When asked to provide news releases or other evidence of activism around that time, NARAL didn’t provide anything.

Kermit who? Abortion zealots still claim emergency access to clinics unnecessary

20120121-191413One of many complaints abortion supporters have against clinic regulations, which they call TRAP laws – Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers – is a requirement for wider doors and hallways than clinics apparently usually have.

“At no point does the width of doorways have any bearing on the medical treatment that’s being administered,” griped Planned Parenthood of Indiana Executive Director Betty Cockrum to jconline.com.

UPDATE 4/16 9:45a: Here’s a good piece on TweetFest Round 1, “Celebrities, politicians force media to look at abortion ‘House of Horrors.'”

4/15, 5:50p: Sign up now to participate in Round 2 of the #Gosnell TweetFest this Wednesday, April 17, from 8a to 8p EST.

Round 1 garnered almost 170,000 tweets, according to LifeSiteNews.com, with the hashtag #Gosnell trending in the number 1 spot, according to Lifenews.com. The TweetFest was credited, along with Democrat Kirsten Powers’ USA Today column, with finally getting the media to pay attention to mass murderer abortionist Kermit Gosnell. For example…

Stanek weekend question: How do we handle mea culpas?

Kermit GosnellUPDATE 4/14, 5:15p: Elizabeth at Patheos has written a great related piece, “Is MSM awareness of Gosnell a wave in tide of God’s mercy?” (HT: Kirsten Powers)

4/13, 11:03: There is a fine line between righteous indignation and gloating.

I would identify the charges levied against the media for ignoring the Kermit Gosnell mass murder trial as righteous indignation.

We pro-lifers engage in this a lot. There is daily evidence that MSM ignores or distorts stories on abortion.

Join #Gosnell TweetFest to break the media blackout

The media is suddenly starting to pay attention to mass murderer Kermit Gosnell, thanks in part to a “tweet fest” currently underway until midnight to “break the media blackout,” as is posted on the Facebook event page launched by Andy Moore, Bryan Kemper, and Troy Newman.

Kudos, too, to pro-life Democrat Kirsten Powers, who also helped light a fire under her liberal friends in the media with her USA Today post.

Per CNN’s Anderson Cooper, within the hour (time stamp is way off)…

Four reasons why media isn’t covering Gosnell mass murder trial

UPDATE 4/16, 9:50a: The Atlantic has posted 14 possible reasons for the media blackout.

UPDATE 4/14, 5:10p: The Gospel Coalition has posted eight reasons for the media blackout, which are good.

4/11, 4:34p: Living in Chicago, I’ve observed press coverage up close on three of the most notorious mass murderers ever apprehended: Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and Richard Speck.

Speck tortured, raped, and murdered eight student nurses in Chicago in 1966. Dahmer murdered 17 boys and men in the Milwaukee/Chicago area between 1978-1991, keeping and eating some of their body parts. Gacy raped and murdered at least 33 boys and men between 1972-1978, burying many in the crawl space of his Chicago suburban home.

In each case the press tripped over themselves to recount every morbid detail, anxious to feed the public’s fascination with the macabre (click to enlarge)…

    • Kirsten Powers joins the chorus of voices challenging the national media blackout of the Kermit Gosnell murder trial:

You don’t have to oppose abortion rights to find late-term abortion abhorrent or to find the Gosnell trial eminently newsworthy. This is not about being “pro-choice” or “pro-life.” It’s about basic human rights. The deafening silence of too much of the media, once a force for justice in America, is a disgrace.
