But serious questions are already being raised about how the new language would work in practice and whether it would even be feasible to implement.
“This is why it’s being attacked by both sides — not because it’s so moderate but because it’s crazy,” said Richard Doerflinger, a spokesman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops….
Sara Rosenbaum, a George Washington University professor of public health and law who criticizes the language as too restrictive, echoes that conclusion: “None of how this is supposed to work is even remotely in the bill, so I don’t know what people are thinking about it.”
If this bill passes, abortion will become a cheaper option for millions of women. We know that the demand for it is sensitive to price. Abortion rates will increase. For almost two decades, many Democrats who favor legal abortion, including Presidents Clinton and Obama, have said that they want to see that rate drop. They have a funny way of showing it.”…
Pro-lifers long ago learned not to trust anything that Democratic leaders say about where they stand on abortion. This week has brought definitive proof that they cannot trust two men who had claimed to be pro-lifers themselves: Sens. Bob Casey of PA and Ben Nelson of NE. Long after the Dick Durbins, Jesse Jacksons, and Dick Gephardts of the world had abandoned the unborn to get ahead in their party, Casey and Nelson ran for office telling anti-abortion voters that they could rely on them.
One might have thought the promise would apply to this legislation, which may have a more direct effect on the abortion rate than anything else they have done. Perhaps Casey and Nelson believe that the legislation somehow keeps pro-lifers from having to subsidize abortion; it contains accounting devices to sustain that illusion. But there is no denying that the legislation makes abortion more accessible. It is hard to see how anyone seeking to stand in solidarity with the unborn would have supported it. That Nelson traded his vote for a modest increase in his state’s take from the federal government does not suggest that such solidarity was uppermost on his mind.
Q . Why is the Senate compromise wording on abortion not acceptable to you?
A . Because it greatly deviates from current law. Current law says no public funding for abortions or insurance policies that provide abortion coverage.
And underneath the Senate language, number one, abortion is a recognized benefit paid for by the federal government; number two, in the exchange, at least one plan, could be 10 plans, but at least one plan must have abortion coverage; number three, you still have the $1 per month, per enrollee (that the Senate bill requires everybody to pay in plans offering abortion coverage) that goes to reproductive services, including abortion. … Those are three good reasons to oppose this language.
The study published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine suggests that women working as biological and chemical scientists and pharmacists face an increased risk of giving birth to children with such defects as gastrointestinal, spinal and heart malformations compared to women in other occupations.
Janitors faced the highest risk while teachers had the lowest.

“Pro-lifers long ago learned not to trust anything that Democratic leaders say about where they stand on abortion.”
All evil begins with a lie. To identify the lie is to unmask the evil.
With evil people such as Obama, it’s fairly easy to unmask the lie. Just listen to what they say and envision the diametric opposite.
Try it. Works every time.
From Stupak’s quote:
“but at least one plan must have abortion coverage; number three, you still have the $1 per month, per enrollee (that the Senate bill requires everybody to pay in plans offering abortion coverage)”
OK, either Stupak is mistaken on this or Sebelius is. Didn’t Sebelius say that everyone in the exchange would pay into the fund?
Here’s my letter to Stupak:
“Honorable Mr. Stupak,
I’m not certain that this is the appropriate address for a Congressman. Regardless, your stance to date showing integrity and valor, remaining stedfast to your Pro-life convictions in the face of fierce opposition, has earned you the aforementioned title.
I, along with the entire Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, and our non-Christian Pro-life friends, implore you to continue the fight and not yield one inch of ground to the pro-death mob.
While it is true that our health care system needs work, this pork-laden bill is not the answer. We understand the current Senate Health Care language will require every pro-life taxpayer, along with their pro-death counterparts, to kick in a minimum of $12 annually to fund abortions.
This is morally reprehensible. Detestable. In fact, it is impossible for me to adequately convey my righteous indignation in mere words.
You sir, (along with our faith in Almighty God, Who seems to enjoy fixing impossible situations) appear to be our last hope of averting an escalation of an already horrific genocide against the most weak, defenseless and vulnerable among us. Please, do not fear being remembered by history as one of the Congressman that denied Health Care reform to millions. What has been proposed is not good law. Rather, embrace your calling as a champion for the unborn, a voice for innocent victims who have none. Be the Abraham Lincoln, the William Wilberforce, the Dr. Martin Luther King, we so desperately need in this hour.
A colleague of mine just passed away, he would have been 49 years old this Christmas Day. I noticed in his funeral announcement that I was only 13 days older than he. When you reach this season of our lives, you want to make every action count. Life is so short, and what we do echoes in eternity.
You my friend face a weighty decision of epic proportions. The lives of literally millions of babies hang in the balance. Not to mention the spiritual consequences we will face as a nation for allowing countless more innocents to be mercilessly slaughtered.
Stay strong my brother, though the entire forces of Hell be arrayed against you – whether by threat and intimidation or by deceitful bribery – you must protect our children and the soul of our Nation.
Our prayers are with you.”
If you Google “Bart Stupak email” you’ll get his contact page.
Ed,
I’m sorry to hear of the death of your colleague.
Excellent letter to Mr. Stupak. As you said, how true it is that “Life is so short, and what we do echoes in eternity”.
Oh how I miss this great leader:

Thanks Phil: Just the antidote I needed to the degradation of His season going on at the White House this year! Any idea which year this one was — not that it makes the slightest bit of difference?
Ed,
Home Run letter. You said it all.
God Bless
Very honestly I was just waiting for Nelson to cave, I knew it was only a matter of time.
He was standing on priniciple? He had Reid&Co. dancing to his tune? Please, that prancing prima donna of the prom act didn’t fool me for a minute.
I’m only saddened it fooled so many people on our side.
Mary,
I have no doubt that, along with the carrots that we know about for Nelson (federal payment of the Medicare increases for the state of Nebraska), Rahm “Dead Fish, Rahm-bo” Emmanuel had at least one stick, and probably more.
For starters, the threat to close the military base in Nebraska that we all heard about. Notice, no more talk about that. No telling what else they threatened him with…exposing a personal sexual indiscretion, perhaps? Maybe an IRS audit of a business or a friend’s business? Who knows?
Not making excuses for Nelson, just want everyone to consider truly what nefarious things this administration is capable of. Keep it in mind as we continue on the path to the 2010 elections…that is, if we even HAVE elections?
Hi Michelle,
Some good points, thank you.
I should always keep in mind this Chicago thug administration that will stop at nothing.
