Prominent NARAL, Planned Parenthood speaker and former Clinton administration legal eagle predicts overturn of Roe v. Wade
NARAL will likely be scratching Walter Dellinger off its speakers list, as will Planned Parenthood….
Dellinger is obviously a pro-abort who served in the Clinton administration as an assistant attorney general and head of the Office of Legal Counsel. During the 1996-1997 Supreme Court term Dellinger served as acting Solicitor General. Dellinger is currently a law professor at Duke University and head of a DC law firm.
So the other side will certainly consider Dellinger’s remarks on the future of legalized abortion, given last night during a debate at George Washington University, tantamount to pro-abort treason. That the debate was cosponsored by liberal think tank Center for American Progress (as well as the conservative American Action Forum and Politico) adds salt to the wound. This morning Politico reported:
Former acting Solicitor General Walter Dellinger predicted Tuesday night that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe vs. Wade, the landmark decision that gives women abortion rights….
The noted liberal scholar said the 1973 decision has become a “trophy” that the court’s conservative bloc could overturn if a Republican president chooses a replacement for Justice Anthony Kennedy.
“I absolutely believe it,” Dellinger said during a forum….
“For a while I thought that one could simply chip away at a lot more and more regulations that sort of protected access (to abortions) for the most affluent women but really made it impossible for women who were vulnerable to geography, poverty (and) youth,” he added. “But now I think that, actually, it is such a symbol of a kind of jurisprudence that conservatives have set themselves in opposition to.”
Such a decision by the Supreme Court would pour barrels of gasoline onto the now smoldering fires of the never-ending culture war….

Don’t be so sure. This is very good talk if you’re raising money for political fights. He didn’t say he wanted the case overturned, he said it would likely happen. That type of prediction will motivate the pro-choice base, who have come to believe (perhaps wrongly) that legal abortion is here to stay.
Sounds like the typical hype in anticipation of a Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

But bad if you’re a pro-choice activist who has ever claimed that Roe v. Wade is “settled law”, or “law of the land”. Instead, it’s the monkey wrench in the common sense of the court’s jurisprudence.

If the ‘pro-choice base’ as you call it, has been busy aborting everything in sight, who’s left (pun intended) to contribute.

I think Dellinger is simply looking ahead at the typical presidential cycle our country has fallen into and considering the age of Kennedy who controls the center of SCOTUS and is coming to a fairly realistic conclusion.
I believe the same kind of realization was also motivating the actions being taken through the whole health-care sham.
With abortion as devisive as slavery, I think things are only going to get much worse before it gets better – there’s too many too invested in this horror to give it up.

The latest poll shows over 50% favor life over abortion, the next generation to raise their own children, should tip that percentage to 65% or higher.
The choice parents are having smaller families then those parents who see children as a gift from God.
John, you’re assuming that pro life parents will have pro life children. I can guarantee you that’s not 100% true.
I would agree (although it’s more of a feeling than based on evidence) that pro choice parents have smaller children than “parents who see children as a gift from god.” Although, I am compelled to point out, many pro choice parents would also say they view children as a gift from God. The difference in family size is probably more a function on how the parents view contraception than how they view abortion.
People who think that getting rid of Roe V Wade will “end” abortion are deluding themselves.
It won’t “end” abortion any more than Prohibition “ended” alcohol consumption in America decades ago.
And if conservatives get their way,namely getting rid of all or most government programs to help the poor,including poor pregnant women,
making puvblic schools teach nothing but abstinence only, and making contraceptives illegal,I guarantee you that abortions will not only cease,but skyrocket in number,and many women will die from botched illegal abortions or be
seriously injured and possibly permanently disabled.
Back-alley abortionists will do a brisk business, and the poorest women will die trying to abort themselves,while women who can afford safe abortions will easily fly off to Europe or elsewhere.
The government won’t be able to enforce the law at all. Possibly a handful of individuals,who are not doctors,who perform abortions will be arrested and prosecuted, but the vast majority of illegal abortions will remain undetected.
Organized crime will no doubt step in and
take advantage of the situation and make mucho moola.
Poor women who DO give birth to children will bring a large number of helpless children into abject poverty, and the lack of government programs to help poor children with nutrition and poor women to get pre natal care will guarantee many poor children growing up malnourished,poorly educated, surrounded by crime,drugs and random violence and shootings, and poverty,unemployment and crime will increase greatly.
There will be a black market in illegal contraceptives.
I guarantee you, it won’t be pretty.

Robert, I’m not the only one who has noticed your animus towards poor people. Your posts sound disturbingly like something written by a eugenicist. Really, was the doomsday scenario — including a “black market in contraceptives” the the case before Roe v. Wade? I don’t think so.

I’m not saying I WANT poor women to have abortions because they’re poor in order to prevent minorities from multiplying. If you think that’s what I meant you’ve completely misunderstood what I was trying to say.
What I was saying was that if abortion becomes illegal again,it will be dooming many children to be born desperately poor,and that the results will be catastrophic to society.
We must provide much more help to poor pregnant women in order to PREVENT them from having abortions and see to it that they are able to provide for their children,born or unborn.
But conservatives don’t want the government to hand out money to the poor,and yet they expect poor women to give birth anyway, despite the terrible adverse circumstances.
If anything,it’s anti-choicers who have animus toward poor women and children.
And please don’t give me all that smug,self-serving baloney about conservatives contribuing more to charities than liberals, because charities cannot possibly provide all the help the poor need. They can’t even come remotely close.
Don’t get me wrong,I’m all for charities. But they can only do so much.
And don’t forget; the number of abortions in the US before Roe v Wade was just as high as it is today. This country cannot afford to make abortion illegal again. This will never work,and will only make a bad situation much,much worse.
There are better ways to deal with the problem of abortion.
Robert, first of all I’m not a conservative. I’m an Independent. I think both parties pretty much stink.
Not all prolifers are conservative or even Republican.
Please tell me where you get these figures that there were just as many abortions before Roe as there are today.
This is probably just a scare tactic to get all the pro-choice people up in arms and actually react against all the GREAT, effective pro-life movement.
I absolutely, without condition, guarantee that Roe will never be overturned. For 17 years I’ve been a sidewalk counselor in front of clinics in several cities, handing out information in English and Spanish to customers about alternatives and help. Some stop, talk to me, and choose life instead. I’ve seen four clinics permanently closed. For all these armchair commentators far removed from the battlefield, let me clue you in on a dirty little secret: Christians don’t want abortion to end, and they won’t dare lift a finger to help! You know what my biggest problems is in counseling? Dealing with those who readily and publicly claim to be members of local, conservative churches as they come in to kill their children. Often I’m either alone out there or, in a city of over a million people, with no more than three or four people helping. I’ve seen clinics close and guarantee they could all be closed within a max of 5 weeks if just 4% of these indifferent, lazy, Rapture-focused Christians would come out and merely pray on public property in front of clinics. But what does helping the helpless and standing for righteousness, (remember, such numerous commands are still in the Bible) have to do with the latest rock band entertainment passing for Sunday worship? Today’s “Christians” would rather be entertained than obey! I’m not saying they like abortion, but when push comes to shove, they’ll live like the lost world 9 times out of 10. I’ve seen it often, and among clinic customers are Sunday School teachers, church staff members, and pastors. Yes. Speeches as this one are merely good for raising money but have nothing at all to do with reality. Get out to the battle and find out what’s really going on.
