Pro-life group challenges Senate candidate’s support of forcing hospitals to dispense morning-after pill
In June I applauded Washington Life Coalition for spotlighting supposedly pro-life US Senate candidate Dino Rossi’s rape/incest exception.
So many pro-life groups give candidates a pass on the rape/incest exception because the general public at this point is uneducated and thinks such an exception is compassionate, when it really isn’t. But particularly in primaries we should not let candidates slide on this position.
Today WLC took on another difficult issue – forcing hospital emergency rooms to dispense emergency contraceptives following rape. Rossi supports that, too.
From WLC’s press release:
WLC released a brand new internet video today to appeal to pro-life voters in the state of WA who have been led to believe they should support Dino Rossi in his bid for U.S. Senate.
The video chronicles some of Rossi’s statements on the issue of abortion, and then reveals an egregious vote that Rossi cast as a state senator, overlooked by the pro-life movement in WA. The news of this vote calls into question Rossi on an issue he refers to as “a matter of conscience.”
In 2002, Dino Rossi voted for SB 6537 which forces hospitals to promote emergency contraception to rape victims and provide it upon request within 72 hours of sexual contact. Emergency contraception, also known as “the morning after pill”, causes an abortion if the woman is pregnant. The bill passed and is now the law in WA state. Physicians, nurses and healthcare workers in hospital emergency rooms are forced to act against their conscience, which is formed by their professional training as well as their moral, ethical and religious views….
WLC encourages pro-life voters to take a close look at the other candidates in the U.S. Senate race, as well as with all races for public office, to find person(s) with the will to advance the cause of restoring these unalienable rights for all.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it a bad idea to take a pill like that if you are not pregnant? Women aren’t being tested for pregnancy, they’re just given a toxic chemical that their body will react to. Of course, I’m pro-life and against such a pill altogether, but why don’t even the pro-choicers have concern about these drugs? Do they not care at all about the health of women? And what if she conceived in the hours or day before the rape and she ends up killing the embryo half belonging to the man she loves?
Thank you again Jill for continuing to illuminate this cause. What a great quote in the Elliott Institute article:
According to Kathleen DeZeeuw, “I, having lived through rape, and also having raised a child ‘conceived in rape,’ feel personally assaulted and insulted every time I hear that abortion should be legal because of rape and incest. I feel that we’re being used by pro-abortionists to further the abortion issue, even though we’ve not been asked to tell our side.”

If I may use this space for a personal note. Please add our son David (7) to your prayers today if you can. He is scheduled for surgery today to remove his colon as a last resort solution for his Ulcerative colitis/Crohn’s. A small portion will be left for possible re-attachment in the future. It has been a long, painful 15 months for him. His body has resisted every other treatment, so it has come to this. Thank you all very much. Here he is:

Call the 700 club too. My son has gone through leukemia. Has Wilson’s Disease and Juvenile Dermatamytocitis. Since he was 10 he has stopped walking on three different occasions. Presently his only problem is he’s overweight. Prayer and medication are the reason. Some things that helped were calling the 700 club often. Getting a prayer cloth for him and making sure it was pinned on him until he was better. That means if it was forgotten and got washed it was put back on his clothing. This is what I’ve observed about things that cause us pain sometimes they help us to grow. I will be praying for your son’s spiritual and physical health and the health of his soul. Please pray the same for my son his name is Daniel and loves school. He also had Down’s and his classification is severe. I’ve also seen a change in his intelluctual capacity. There’s a club called Hugs and Hopes they also make a big difference. Hope all of this helps. It’s being sent with prayers for healing that envelope you and yours during this growing season. Also something else that helps is when he’s hurting make sure his pain is addressed. I’m not sure if he can take it check with his doctor there’s a product called coral reef calcium. It’s excellent for pain. It’s put out by a Dr. Barefoot and comes in a brown bottle with a silver and blue label. It can be purchased at a GNC. If he is allergic to seafood he can’t take it. Check with his doctor it really addresses pain.
Jim and Myrtle, I wish your children all the best. Don’t give up hope!
Ashley, you have a right to your own opinion, but not your own facts. The misinformation you posted here does not change the actual science of embryology. Your opinion that powerful breast cancer and blood clot causing steroids are merely contraceptives two weeks after conception is simply a fallacy that you would like people to believe. This opinion also eliminates the phenomenon of twins or triplets. There are no twins in your world, because this happens before implantation also. The word contraception implies that it works only BEFORE conception. The term is NOT contraimplantation. It is 10% dishonest and scientifically idiotic to say that the morning after pills cannot work after conception, or prevent or end an implantation in progress for that matter.
If YOU had been killed two weeks after conception and just before your own implantation, you would not be here now. But you hate human rights as much as you hate medical science. If you want to try and fool people and spread breast cancer and blood clots to women, I suggest you do it on an abortionists blog. Perhaps you could pay a visit to the “morning after pill after effects” page on about.com and see what this human pesticide actually does to the female bodies of these women you pretend to support and defend.
You can also see more actual medical information – the stuff you don’t want to keep women in the dark about – here:
http://www.uvalies.org/
As for your red herring appeal to pregnancy caused by rape, I suggest you have a chat with Rebecca Kiessling and explain to her why she should be dead now.
correction:
It is 100% dishonest to try and fool people into believing shley’s quack attempt at explaining human development to try and defend her cruel politics.
Ashley, you’re back! Good to see. I am not a horrible person, nor do I clearly “relish the idea of forcing the rape victim to get pregnant.” Factually, these drugs do kill a fertilized embryo, but I don’t know the statistics (maybe someone else can pipe in if they know). Factually, I’m not relishing the idea of a pregnant rape victim. As if rape is not traumatic enough, however, this ‘moral loophole’ that people like to jump through is also traumatic to the female patient. Imagine, you’ve already been through the attack, now you’re going to be given a drug that will make you sick, with cramping, bleeding, etc that can last for weeks. Some women have seizures or even die from reactions to these drugs. That’s not bad enough though. You also believe it’s ok to take a traumatized rape victim, have her get up on a table naked, turn on a loud machine, and then in the most bloody and violent assualt possible you kill a child that’s only a few weeks old (or older). Now, it’s nobody’s business but my own, but I have had both experiences. Guess which one keeps me up at night and haunts me? I’ll give you a clue: not the rape.
Sean
Thanks. Daniel is a walking miracle. Next to prayer I believe a positive personal testimony is the biggest encouragement to anyone facing a difficult prognosis. That’s why I like to share his testimony. At one point putting a peg in him was seriously considered. Presently he’s in remission with the dermatomyocitis and the leukemia. I tell him he is strong and expect him to live to be old! When you pray pray that he will excel in school in addition to praying he stays in good health. Now that he’s doing better sometimes he likes to challenge me. He’s a big boy and will soon pass me up. So I look at him straight in the eye and tell him others might be weaker than him but I am strong and just ask him if he understands. I think he remembers everything I did to help him get better and he just says yea and laughs! I always believed in miracles but Daniel is just a walking confirmation.
I happen to know quite a few women conceived in rape who weren’t aborted by their mothers. They have A LOT to say on this topic. Who wouldn’t be tired of hearing that they shouldn’t be here? They should have been killed??
I also know quite a few women who conceived in rape. Several that had abortions and several that had their babies. The women who aborted their child conceived in rape ALL regret it.
Why not let those who have experienced rape, pregnancy, abortion have a say?? There are certainly more than a handful and their stories are valid and irrefutable.
**I have zero empathy–none–for the ball of cells that Plan B “kills.” If it’s between a living, breathing rape victim and a couple of cells, I think the choice for everyone besides Christofascists is obvious.** Yes, indeed you do have zero empathy. Humans evolved empathy, as have most mammals and many other animals including birds. Empathy is not some throw away human emotion. It is part of how we adapt to the world, how a species lives and grows. You also reveal a very important ingredient in the pro-choice stew: pitting a woman against her child. There is no social or biological advantage to a female who engages her unborn child in a battle to the death. A baby is not an enemy combatant and the woman who kills her child gains nothing. The only winners are the abortionist$, the lobbyist$, and the pharmaceutical companie$.
wow, Niniek, that was great..
I’ll only add that Ashley can only HOPE to keep people in the dark about human development. She is still a clump of cells. And indeed, she or I could be aborted tomorrow as long as the only justification for doing so is that someone else – a parent, perhaps – decides that we are very unwanted. SHe knows when she became female. She knows when her life began. She knows she would be dead in the garbage now if she had been aborted. She just simply supports killing for convenience. Her own convenience in particular. there is nothing new about any of this.
“It will be necessary to open special institutions for abortions and doctors must be able to help out there in case there is any question of this being a breach of their professional ethics.”

Jim and Myrtle, I wish your children all the best. Don’t give up hope!
Like Sean, I too wish you both lotsa hope. It seems a wee bit strange, but almost every condition that Myrtle mentions re. her son has zinc deficit as a primary cause … whether Crohn’s/ulcerative colitis or neoplastic disorders like leukemia. [Even Wilson’s Disease has high copper – low zinc levels and the photo I saw reminds me of many people with Friedreich’s Ataxia (my problem)] (‘Zinc and Copper in Medicine’ eds Karcioglu & Sarper @1983)
Optimizing zinc status is a wee bit more tricky than simple replacement. The key is IMO supplementing with a wide variety of nutrients – calcium being one.
The ‘pool’ for zinc on every cell-membrane looks like M-Zn-taurine [where M is the membrane; Zn (zinc) is like a hair follicle; and taurine (amino acid) is like a hair shaft.] (Symposia on ‘Taurine’ A. Barbeau & R. Huxtable 1973 & ’75 – Neurological Institute of Montreal). To improve cell dynamics, taurine (<200mg)(very inexpensive) should be supplemented with 50mg zinc.
There are ‘other’ considerations too: a) the attached taurine makes use of it’s Zwitterion effect. A small charge will keep cells from sticking to each other. b) the magnesium cation replaces the zinc bond on the INSIDES of cells. The membranes of organelles, must be kept apart too. So supplementing with Mg along with Ca, Zn, taurine is a must. d)The M site is likely AA (arachidonic acid) of the omega-6 family. It is a component of all meat, but it seems very hard to supplement. The use of EPO(evening primrose oil) may help. [As would human colostrum/breast milk.] Use of fish oils should also assist – EPA/DHA of the omega-3 family – especially if there is any intellectual/vision/hearing involvement. e) The M-Zn-taurine structure not only supplies zinc to all the many zinc fabrics a cell makes, but it is an ion pump. Potassium is pumped to the cells’ INSIDES while sodium remains OUTSIDE. The two are part of the body’s energy structure. This is very important for problems with PMS and lethargy.
Sure hope this helps!
Everyone,
Nothing stops a rape victim from going to the nearest pharmacy that sells the morning after pill and purchasing it upon her discharge from the ER. Nothing stops a friend, relative, or rape crisis center representative from purchasing it for her. This whole issue is a red herring.
ER’s do not dispense every drug a patient may need, but rather will give a patient a prescription or advise them what they should purchase over the counter.
Jim and myrtle,
My thoughts and best wishes are with you and your children at this difficult time. Have you looked into alternative and homeopathic medicine? I would refer you to http://www.acam.org for a practitioner near you.
What is it with you Ashley, that you are only happy when calling people names? I’m glad you’ve backed away from the Catholics (at least from the present), but calling people “Christofascists” (whatever that means) does not add anything at all to your arguments.
This ball of cells that turned into a mass of cells held together in skin is glad someone (my parents) had empathy on me.
I thank God the world is full of empathy! More empathy for “balls of cells”!!! :)
Perhaps the argument that “you were once a ball of cells” seems weak to some is because the significance of the science is lost. If unique human life having been started at that point is not appreciated the argument of value is not going to be appreciated. The science and the wonder of it is just not taught nor understood by so many. To some that “ball of cells” might as well be mud because they can’t appreciate the uniqueness of human life.
I thought that there were rules here about posting comments that did not include name-calling, slandering, insults, inflammatory remarks, etc.
Where are the moderators? Shouldn’t there be more decorum?
Incidentally, my friends adopted a beautiful girl, conceived in rape. That birth mom did not have to raise the child, and allowed that child to live. That family thinks that birth-mom is a hero. I agree. That little girl is about to attend school.
And pregnancy occurs when fertilization (conception) does. That is why there is a separate distinction between a pregnancy and ‘established pregnancy’ (implantation). The key question is – is there a new human or not? If yes – pregnancy! if not – not.
calling those facts by different names does not change the facts. If there is a new human – pregnancy!
And the other thing to consider is that many rape victims actually heal better from their rape and subsequent pregnancy by allowing the pregnancy run to term and to birth the baby. This is verified by scientific study.
Why should the child suffer the ‘death penalty’ (abortion) when the rapist gets a lesser punishment? The child is innocent – the man is not.
Dear Joy,
I am here as a moderator trying to figure out this new system!! :)
Ashley,

I understand Zahara, the adopted daughter of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is also the result of her mother being raped. Obviously this is a child loved and treasured as well as very beautiful. Her mother apparently asked Angelina to adopt her so that she could have the best life possible.
If we could check our family trees far back enough we would find conceptions that did not occur under the best of circumstances and we likely descend from rape somewhere along the line. The world after all was never a friendly place.
You’re so right Joy, why is the death of the child called for while rapists in our society get little more than a wrist slapping and child molesters are allowed to roam the streets?
Thank you all for your prayers and support. David is recovering from last night’s operation just fine. His life has been altered but he is free of the pain of the UC/Crohn’s.
Myrtle, we offer our prayers and best wishes for Daniel too. His is a very inspiring story.
We had tried just about everything we could think of and have had previous success with for other things: accupuncture, herbal and Chinese medicine, chiropractic care, homeopathics, nutritional therapy, and plenty of healing prayer and more before we decided on the surgery. He also had a Lyme bacteria infection at some point which we treated. Essentially, David’s body decided for us.
Ashley – Kathleen’s quote sums up the experiences of the majority of women who concieved through rape, it is not an isolated case. Did you even read the linked article? Also, calling women who are pro life “women haters” (I think the comments were deleted) is completely ridiculous, and actually demonstrates your own hateful feelings.
I disagree Lori. Christians have great interest in what everyone else does. There is a definite fascist outlook to Christianity. “To spread the word of god” weather we want to hear it or not. Missionaries traveling all over the globe telling the rest of the world they are wrong… See Christians think we all need to be saved because we were born with original sin on our souls and they wish to show us the light, but you making the assumption that you’re right. There is no scientific evidence of humans even having a soul let alone one that needs to be saved.
I think it all comes out of arrogance. People want to believe their life has a greater meaning, that their life is not insignificant to the universe.
I have always liked the way Douglas Adams put it…
Imagine a puddle of water in a pothole just woke up one day. It would think that the hole fits it perfectly, almost like the hole was built for it because it’s fit so well it must be by design. As the day goes on the sun is beating down and the puddle is getting smaller, but it knows everything is ok because this world was made for it. It continues to get smaller never thinking anything was amiss because it believes so strongly that this world was made for it. At the very last minute of its existence, when there is just a drop in the bottom of the pothole it finally occurs to the puddle, this world no longer fits me. Then it disappears forever and the pothole goes on existing without the puddle just like it did before the puddle came along. The pothole knows it was made by a lucky mistake when the asphalt was laid incorrectly.
