- Secular ProLife has a quick logic lesson.
- Pro-lifers have staged a protest at the MD abortion clinic where abortionist LeRoy Carhart will begin performing late-term abortions:Organizers said they plan to stage regular, peaceful demonstrations as long as Carhart is working at the clinic. By holding regular protests, they hope other businesses in the office park will put pressure on Carhart to leave….
- Canadian women who live on Prince Edward Island are apparently choosing to pay for their abortions out of pocket instead of getting tax-funded abortions due to privacy concerns. They supposedly don’t want their names on government documents.
- Apparently, the country of Georgia has the highest abortion rate in the world:Even worse looks the data collected in the Reproductive Health Surveys conducted in 1999 and 2005 by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention which assigns 3.1 abortions per woman in Georgia (2005), the highest in the world.
- 2 researchers have published a paper in the pro-choice journal Reproductive Health Matters which claims that 47,000 women died worldwide in 2008 from the complications of unsafe abortion. This is a notable decrease from the most recent estimate from the World Health Organization which claims that approximately 70,000 women died from unsafe abortion complications in 2005. Also, there’s a decrease in estimated abortion-related deaths despite the WHO estimating a nearly 2 million rise in the number of unsafe abortions. This is just another piece of evidence that having pro-choice advocates estimate how many women die from unsafe abortions is hardly a sound science.

I thought Russian women had the highest abortion rate in the world. Don’t they say Russian women average 8 abortions or something like that?
I’d heard something like that a few years ago, Sydney, but recently Russia has started turning pro-life.
Quick question on Carhart – when a third trimester abortion is deemed necessary for medical reasons, is the goal/hope to have that done at a medical facility or hospital with better regulation other than a place like Carharts?
What do you mean “medical reasons” X? Because mom’s life is in danger? If so they would do an emergency c-section in a matter of minutes not butcher the baby over the span of days. Or by medical reasons do you mean the baby is not good enough to live so must be butchered? Why would pro-lifers agree to that? Thats eugenics. Something Hitler supported btw.
A late term abortion with Carhart takes 3 days.
In regard to the abortion rate in Georgia versus that of Russia, both countries have extremely high rates. However, the Orthodox Church in each country is making inroads in helping people understand the sin of abortion and the demographic crisis it has created. The Patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Georgia called for parents of two in Georgia to consider having at least one more child, and this was the result: http://www.johnsanidopoulos.com/2010/07/700-children-baptized-in-georgia.html
GOP, please take the time to look up third trimester abortions for yourself. If the mother’s life is really in danger, she doesn’t have two or three days to wait around for a stick of seaweed to expand. And there is no reason to deliberately murder a viable baby. How long have you been commenting on this website? Do you actually think you’re going to ‘catch’ the pro-lifers being pro-abortion? Srsly? Because I think we’ve beat the horse that is ectopic pregnancy and other actually life threatening situations. Carhart is a serial killer who makes money doing what he loves to do.
EGV,
When necessary to save the life of the mother or there is some other critical medical issue, premature C-sections and inductions can be perfomed and always have been at hospitals.
I remember when a pregnant woman had a life threatening uterine infection at our Catholic hospital and an induction at 5 months of pregancy was seen as a possible necessity to save her life. Thankfully the infection cleared up.
EGV, no competent physician will diagnose a patient, pregnant or otherwise, with a life threatening condition and then not refer the patient to the care he/she needs!
Can you imagine your doctor saying, “well EGV, I have some serious concerns about your heart, now have a great day and good luck as you go looking for someone who can help you”.
When my doctor recently had some concerns about me, I was immedicately referred to a specialist.
I am highly skeptical of these sob stories as to how the late term pregnant woman was facing imminent death had it not been for Tiller or Carhart. If this was the case, then some doctors out there who don’t know enough to refer patients to specialized care need their licenses suspended and fast.
BTW, have we heard of pregnant women dying because Tiller was killed?
Of course if you want the baby dead then Carhart is da man.
Thanks Mary for your post. I worked at a Catholic hospital for years never did we have to take the life of mother’s over baby’s. We would treat both and try to save the life of both but in rare instances we could not save the baby but the mother and family knew we tried as we gave excellent, compassionate care. Lies from the pro-aborts are so pathetic and sick.
Mary – thanks for the answer.
Ninek – don’t be a fool, looking too far into questions.
Mary again – you seem to be able to answer without being a jerk…follow-up, and this is more ignorance because I’m not somebody who has studied the issue real in depth – but what third trimester abortions are legal that don’t fall in the medically necessary (and fast) category that should be done at hospitals?
Hi EGV,
I’m not certain everyone on this blog agrees I’m not a jerk. :) Anyway, depending on the state and what I have seen of the Tiller situation, many of these late term abortions may well fall under the “mental health” category, which translates into any reason the woman and abortionist see fit. While Tiller employees claimed there were psychological reasons, I believe a psychiatrist reviewed Tiller patient charts and agreed there were no real psychiatric issues involved in any of these “mental health” claims. Put simply, these women for whatever reason decided to terminate advanced pregnancies. Of course we will be told only the most heart wrenching stories such as rape and a severely malformed baby. Frivolous reasons don’t generate much sympathy. According to Tiller employees, many were fetal anamolies of some sort or genetic disease. BTW, not all the anamolies like drawfism or cystic fibrosis are fatal or even considered disabling. I understand many “little people” are deeply offended at the notion that a drawf baby should be aborted. The degree of severity of cystic fibrosis is also variable. Some cases are very mild, others severe.
If there is a serious health or life risk to the pregnant woman, she certainly shouldn’t be sent to Tiller or now Carhart, but rather hospitalized or placed under the care of a specialist. That’s why I don’t buy these claims that Tiller or Carhart saved any woman’s life.
I haven’t heard of any increase in the death rate of pregnant women since Tiller was killed.
If the baby has died in utero the woman can be induced or wait until she naturally expels the baby. Again no need to see Tiller. Also if my unborn child is terminal, wouldn’t I want to deliver the baby in a hospital setting surrounded by my family and friends or would I want to fly thousands of miles to kill my baby a couple of months earlier? What is the rationale?
Yes it is a tremendous heartache when it is discovered the unborn baby has fatal anamolies and will die before or after birth, but is it any less of a heartache when the full term healthy child dies of a prolapsed umbilical cord? Sorry, but life if full of heartache, expected and unexpected.
Hi PLL,
Thank you for the kind words. During obstetrical emergencies certainly everything necessary is done to save the mother and child’s life. People still have the mentality that a Catholic hospital will only care about saving the baby, and let the mother die or that opposition to abortion forbids taking whatever action is necessary, including abortion, to save the mother’s life. This is absurd.
I debated a poster some months ago who was convinced Catholic hospitals deliberately discriminated against AIDS patients which I told her was absurd. In fact I told her she didn’t know what she was talking about. I have cared for AIDS patients and they were treated as all other patients. Attention and care were certainly paid to the special needs of this patient, as they would be with any patient. In fact one such patient came from his small town to our hospital to protect his privacy, which was certainly understandable. A Catholic hospital! Imagine! Apparently no one told him to expect abuse and mistreatment from us.
You are welcome Mary. Maybe our clarification will clear up some of the myths about Catholic hospitals to those who want to know the truth. I am so tired of pro-aborts showing up on this blog and posting lies about the care women receive at Catholic hospitals because woman will NOT be given abortion-on-demand but will leave with a live baby if at all possible, not a dead one.
Also I happen to know one of the best AIDS hospice units in the midwest is run by a Catholic hospital, I never worked there but have heard raves about the care patients receive.
I heard Pres. Obama signed an executive order in the spring which tried to paint a black-eye on hospitals saying hospitals discriminate against homosexuals by “keeping their gay lovers away from homosexual patients”. This is frustrating to me because I know lesbian patients were never denied their support person in L & D or in post-partum when I worked in a Catholic hospital, it is the patient’s right to have whoever they want with them. We treated everyone with dignity and respect and also we did not have the time or inclination to police who patient’s had in their rooms, unless the patient herself requested someone be kept away from their room we would never bother to do such a thing. This was a political stunt to appease his political base that he was doing something to protect them but was a slap in the face of healthcare workers and healthcare institutions. Good night take care.
Hi PLL,
Good point about gay people. This was just political posturing. The patient can bring who they darn well want, be it a spouse, mistress, lover, or next door neighbor. Like you, I don’t question or care who the patient brought along. I have seen obvious gay partners accompany and visit their loved ones as freely as anyone.
Also, if a person wants someone other than a legal spouse or relative to be responsible for their medical decisions they need only draw up the proper legal papers. My husband was the medical Power of Attorney for a longtime friend who did not want his family involved in any way. Gay partners can and do make medical decisions for partners, but this must designated in the Power of Attorney. I would recommend EVERYONE have medical power of attorney drawn up to designate who is responsible for their medical decisions should they become incompetent. Things can get extremely complicated and heartbreaking if a suddenly incompetent person has left no instructions of any kind.
BTW PPL, this was another point brought up by that poster, that Catholic hospitals don’t honor Power of Attorney and/or patient’s pre-designated instructions, and don’t permit gay partners to visit. Again, I had to set her straight. These are legal documents and the Catholic or any hospital must honor them. In fact we hope patients have them so we do have some guidelines, especially when there is family estrangement. I had outpatient surgery a few days ago at a Catholic hospital and the nurse asked me if I had Power of Attorney and who is the person responsible should I become incompetent. Dahhhhhh, kind of obvious Catholic hospitals honor these documents, ya think?
Oh, my Catholic hospital was also the first in the city to deliver a baby of a lesbian couple. It made the local newspaper. We have also had and continure to have many highly respected gay employees.
Very good points Mary. Thanks. Like I said maybe this will help someone who has heard these lies. God bless.
Thanks Mary – that was the info I was looking for.
Hi EGV,
You’re entirely welcome.
