Former Chicago Bear to White House: If my family can’t come, I won’t come
Former Chicago Bears great and Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Hampton will not accompany the Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team to the White House on Friday [October 7]….
The team wasn’t honored after winning the Super Bowl on Jan. 26, 1986, because the space shuttle Challenger exploded two days later, killing everyone on board.
“Family can’t go, I don’t want to go, that’s it,” Hampton texted to ESPNChicago.com’s Melissa Isaacson on Monday.
But Hampton, appearing on WSCR 670 in Chicago recently, said there was more to his decision.
“It’s my own personal choice,” Hampton said. “I don’t choose to go. No family, no kids. Honey’s going to the White House, and you tell your kids and your wife, ‘Oh, I’m sorry. You’re not invited.’
“Secondly, I’m not a fan of the guy in the White House. And third, it was 25 years ago. Let it go.”
~ ESPN Chicago, October 5
I love Good Ole Number 99 and his family values, but “let it go”? Never! Ditka, Sweetness, The Refrigerator, Punky QB – what an amazing year that was…

Just rub it in, Jill , that we’ve never won a Superbowl (and probably won’t this year)!

This guy is AWESOME. I’d totally do the same thing, probably only a little more vocally. ;)

I have an 8 year old named Payton, after Sweetness! My dh is from Green Bay (Hiya Bryan!), and said Walter Payton is the only non-Packer player that’s ever walked into Lambeau and got the standing O.
My heart, incidentally, is broken after last week’s Sports Illustrated came out. Wish I never read it.

Yeah, what Phillymiss said. The fog bowl a few years later still makes me wince.
That said, I listened to WLUP a lot in those years. Dan Hampton and Tom Thayer were entertaining to listen to.

I was definitely a Bears fan, much so that I timed it so that my son would take his nap when the Bears played! Yes, I even bought the super bowl shuffle video, too. Who knows where it is now! LOL.
My favorite player during that time… oh, boy, that’s a tough choice but I suppose Mike Singletary overall.
Dan’s priorities are definitely in order. But that’s Dan!
Yes, Hans, I also listened to WLUP during those years. Did you listen to Johnny B in the morning, too?

Carol,
I mostly listened to Steve Dahl in the late afternoon and early evening, when the signal got here to the Philly area in the winter. They did a great reading of the “It’s A Wonderful Life” radio script.

@Hans — I know this isn’t a sports blog, but this past weekend has GOT to be the WORST WEEKEND EVER in Philly sports, and that’s saying alot. Our QB should change his name to Michael PICK. Oh well — go orange and black (and I ain’t talking about Halloween)!
