The laugh-a-minute abortion telethon
There may not be a more painful oxymoron than “feminist comedian.” MTV flash-in-the-pan Sarah Silverman and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart co-creator Lizz Winstead teamed up in New York City on Nov. 18 for a telethon to fund abortions in Texas via NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Think Jerry’s Kids – children assisted by the Muscular Dystrophy Association – except instead of saving them, the unborn are eliminated. They call that “reproductive justice.”…
This was not a Mensa meeting. Silverman cracked, “I also, much like much of the pro-lifers, I believe in protecting the child – you know, when she is being forced to have a baby at 14.” Hayes replied, “I think abortion is so taboo, and it seems like that taboo is part of what enforces the very repressive politics on the issue.” Silverman shot back, “Yes. I think vaginas really, really scare people, honestly.” Honestly?
At the telethon, Silverman dragged out her typical shock-jock shtick, offering her own “vaginal napkin” as an auction item. Periodically, a woman dressed in a giant plush vulva costume – “courtesy of the sex-toy store Babeland” – came onstage to announce the money total raised. “We’re actually going to do a live abortion in this show,” Silverman joked. “With a union provider,” Winstead added. Well, slap my knee.

Yes. I think vaginas really, really scare people, honestly.
Adults who dress up as genitals scare me. Can you say sex addict? I would keep my children far away from these folks.

This reminds me a joke that was very popular among some gay friends I used to work with:
Q.) How many lesbian feminists does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A.) (standing angrily akimbo) THAT’S NOT FUNNY!

Wow. A vagina costume. I take that so seriously. I want to hear what she has to say.
Not.

When I see stuff like this, it convinces me even more that pro-lifers are winning, will win, MUST WIN, by definition.

Wow. Way to reduce women to nothing but their parts. I am so much more than my vagina, kay Sarah Silverman? I have a BRAIN, I have a HEART and I don’t need to war with my biology or hate my children in order to succeed in this world and be fulfilled and happy.
But thanks for perpetuating that stereotype that women are nothing more than their labia, that our entire worth is found in our genitals…that really helps women, feminists.

Down near the bottom center of her little pink costume is a ‘circle’.
Is that supposed to be a ‘ring worm’, genital herpes, or an o’bama?

“We’re actually going to do a live abortion in this show,” Silverman jokes. Here’s an idea: Show a movie of a live abortion, such as “Silent Scream” or anything depicting a baby being sucked or ripped apart. No more joking then.

Would any woman applaud that line? Silverman reducing this issue to such triviality should be a sign for pro-aborts to distance themselves from this idiocy. Do pro-aborts honestly want to be associated with “live abortions?” After all they are all for the woman’s health and wellness. This is not a joking matter I think even in that camp. This is going to be a short-lived shtick.

Delusional.
Pathetic.
Dearest Proaborts,
Either abortion is a serious, heart wrenching decision between a woman and her doctor or it is a comedy show with vulva costumes and what you think passes for humor.
It can’t be both.

What-a-sec….. This was a telethon? As in, broadcast on television on some sort of network?
Held in New York, to collect donations to aid in the killing of children in Texas?
This is all just too outrageous to take in.
But consider this: What would be the reaction if some Tea Partiers in Texas held a telethon to pay for the abortions of Jewish kids in New York?

Also, if this is a telethon, aren’t children watching? A “vagina napkin” and someone dressed as female genitalia? Real classy Sarah.
Can you imagine Jerry Lewis on his muscular dystrophy telethon auctioning a napkin he pulled out of his underwear or someone on his show dressed as male genitalia?
What is with these people? Doesn’t NARAL and NOW consider this degrading to women and their cause?

Silverman must see herself as a kind of madame, selling out women as material goods to men who could care less. She also compared the Catholic Religion to Sceientology saying both were mere trivial inventions, in Jerry Sienfeld’s Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. She started saying the same about judaism, but she didn’t want to piss of Jerry. It’s like Authur Schlesinger Jr. said: Catholicism is the last socially acceptable predjudice. I guess mina like how abortion is the last socially acceptable form of murder. Jerry called her a sock-puppet, and well, how she’s letting herself be used by men who are purely motivated by self-gratification, I would have to say that yes, she is a tool of the sock variety.

Kudos to the author for calling it a vulva costume as opposed to a vagina costume. The vagina is the conduit between the introitus and uterus. It is not the vulva.
Hayes replied, “I think abortion is so taboo, and it seems like that taboo is part of what enforces the very repressive politics on the issue.” Silverman shot back, “Yes. I think vaginas really, really scare people, honestly.”
Wait, abortion is taboo, and this is connected to the idea that vaginae frighten people?
…
Whut?
First off, if female reproductive organs frightened us, wouldn’t term pregnancy and childbirth be as “taboo” as abortion? After all, childbirth is very much about vaginae. I’m against elective abortion. I also happen to be an OB RN. According to Silverman’s logic, I’m likely to be terrified of vaginae.
But I don’t cower in a corner or run screaming during a delivery or vaginal exam. I don’t even do that while watching an abortion clip. Maybe I’m a fluke.
Besides, all of this “feminist” talk of vaginae and uteri is a red herring fallacy of relevance. It distracts listeners from the actually issue at hand.
Abortions are not vaginae. Abortions are not uteri. Abortions are not female reproductive members. They involve female reproductive parts, but they are not THE female reproductive system.
The vast majority of people against elective abortion are against elective abortion not because vaginae scare us, but because elective abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy in such a way as the end the life of the gestating person before he or she becomes what is currently the legally protected newborn.
In other words, the intention of the procedure is the death of a human being, also known as a person.
In other words, we’re against elective abortion because it kills people.
By that logic, legally restricting abortion “legislates vaginas/uteruses” kind of like legally restricting murder legislates hands.
Nice distraction tactic, guys.

“reality” chiming in Silverman who makes fun of women by joking about “live abortions.” Oh well, he just disproved my theory that pro-aborts value integrity.
CityofAngels – yes you are absolutely correct: Siverman joking about “live abortions” supports your assessment of “selling out women as material goods to men who could care less.” Don’t get discouraged by “reality’s” total disregard of logical thought.

Reality, comedians routinely make fun of Christians, especially Catholics, all the time. Jay Leno is always joking about the Pope, pedophile priests, etc., but I have yet to hear him make fun of gays. Some black comedian (I forget his name) had a routine where he made fun of gays and was roundly chastised.
As for atheism — well, many people in Hollywood are secular or admitted atheists like Seth McFarlane, who is very hostile to religion — he is constantly ridiculing Christianity and sometimes Judaism. I think that dog on “Family Guy” is also an atheist. Same with South Park. One of the two is an atheist. But comedians never ridicule Islam, or they know they would be staring at the business end of a fatwah.

Phillymiss — don’t read Reality’s posts. Just skip over them and listen to the little oink, oink echo by.
Atheists and gays believe that they are subject to prejudice…. but only because the kindly and benevolent majority of Americans believe they are wrong. However, they are allowed to gather in peace and spread their message…. and we prosecute those who do violence against them, and we persecute those who advocate violence and hatred against them.
Catholics, on the other hand, are subject to public vitriol and ridicule. In spite of our contributions to our cultural heritage and our rich intellectual tradition, we are portrayed as superstitious bigots. We are not invited to explain ourselves in the public media, and Catholic characters are not portrayed sympathetically in the entertainment media — opportunities the gays and atheists have enjoyed with widespread abandon.
We can’t even get a religious exemption from having to pay for other people’s birth control.

Shocking, yet easily forgotten. Rich and kinda famous, yet easily ignored.
Except when she gets mentioned here, I’ve never heard of her.
(Oh — but I noticed that she did a voice in “Wreck-It Ralph,” so I didn’t see that movie.)

The attack on Catholicism is most evident however around Christmas. The liberals have already managed to take Christ out of Christmas but all day today I am hearing how Hannukah fell on Thanksgiving this year. As with any calendar, stuff like this happends.
I am curious though how Silverman will celeberate this thanksgivukkah? Sadly, I think, this alignment will be lost on her. What would her Rabbi sister say???

I think that there’s a point that Christian views aren’t particularly displayed in media besides like FOX news and such. Probably because the type of media you’re talking about is way disproportionately produced by the non-religious and liberal people who are either anti-religious or trying to reach out for a wider base than just conservative religious people.
But then you have things like Captain America and such, that’s supposed to appeal to a wide base but that character is a good person and portrayed as a Christian. And there are other examples of positive portrayals of Christians. And of course FOX news is dedicated to denigrating atheists just as much as MSNBC and Comedy Central mocks Christians.
But I think in personal life Christians definitely have the upper hand. If you’re non-religious in the US you’re more likely than not to be surrounding by Christians instead of people who share your beliefs. It’s been shown in surveys that people trust atheists less than Muslims even (and given how much people dislike Islam in this country, that’s saying something). You get people saying that atheists have no morals and no values, etc etc etc. And don’t even get me started on homophobia and the absolutely mean and cruel things people say about gays (and for my detractors on this site NO I didn’t bring the gay thing up this time, someone else did lol).

South Park HAS criticized Islam. Believe me, I’ve watched literally every episode in the first 12 seasons. They actually made an entire two episode blurb complaining about Comedy Central censoring them when they try to equally criticize Islam. South Park also mocks gays, Jews, atheists, agnostics, Mormons, Scientologists, vegetarians, Republicans, Democrats, Canadians, the English, the Japanese, rednecks, black people, white people, Hispanics, New Agers, and literally everything else you can think of to mock. If the thing about the Simpsons having a line for every situation, then I think there should be a thing about South Park mocking every person you can think of. Dude they even mock sexual abuse and rape, on occasion. They may not be nice, but they can’t really be accused of not being equal opportunity mockers.

Now that I think about it, South Park is actually a lot meaner to the gay characters (and Canadians, sorry Navi and JDC!) and atheist characters than they are to Christian characters. Their Jesus character is a nice guy, at least (though they have him as an imaginary character in Imagination Land, which would probably upset you guys lol). Meanwhile, their Satan is gay and had an affair with Saddam Hussein. Mr Garrison and Mr Slave are the most prominent gay characters, and Mr Slave might be nice enough but he’s def portrayed as an utterly depraved pervert. Mr Garrison on the other hand is quite a jerk, and does some really awful things. And then he becomes a woman. And then a man again. Oh well. And atheist are mocked quite readily in many episodes, Richard Dawkins definitely took a beating when they portrayed him. And there’s this two part episode where Cartman gets sent forward in the future and all religion has been abolished… but contrary to what militant anti-religious people would suspect there are just as many wars between atheist factions as there were between religious factions in the past. They have some pretty good social commentary on that show and in no way is it always biased against Christianity (though the more unpleasant parts of Christianity do take a beating, I will say).
So yeah, when people say that comedians don’t ever criticize gays or atheists like they do Christians, South Park is a glaring example of how that isn’t true. And then you have people like George Carlin and Eddie Murphy and other stand ups who said/say non-PC things all the time. So I think there is some major selection bias when people claim that certain things aren’t criticized when it comes to comedy.
Oh, except Islam isn’t criticized quite as much in my opinion. Probably because people are trying to avoid the chance of retaliation from extremists. Networks don’t want to take the chance even if the edgier comics want to do something.
